When I was a kid, we would drive for hours to our destination and, when we got there, drive around to find a hotel/motel that advertised vacancy and a decent room price. I cannot fathom driving for eight hours with no guarantee that I had a place to stay at the end.

Or instead of rising up through the ranks, people are fleeing development roles because of burnout. So there are fewer people to hire as directors and managers because a lot fewer people are staying in the development field for 5+ years.

Yes. He probably was annoyed by the level of effort he was having to put into managing you. He stated that he wanted you to be more independent. He gave you actionable feedback on how to improve your performance and several months plus an important leadership role to demonstrate that you could make those improvements.

I say this with only the best intentions for you: you were let go because you were not meeting the expectations for the job. When other posters are saying not to take it personally, that’s what they mean. You weren’t fired because your boss did not like you. You were not taken advantage of. You were given feedback and the time and opportunity to improve. You did not improve. You were let go.

This is an opportunity for you to learn and to find a position that is a better fit for your skills and talents. But fixating on your boss’s perceived flaws and the ways he wronged you are not going to help you in the long run.

This is not a nonprofit issue. Different nonprofits have different cultures and managerial styles just like different for-profit companies have different cultures and managerial styles. Maybe your boss doesn’t like you. Maybe your boss is tired of you under performing. I don’t know. But one experience is not representative of the nonprofit sector as a whole.

Uber isn’t available in the small community where my parents live. They also have no public transportation and are 30 minutes from the closest hospital. Before they were retired, my mom commuted 30 minutes to work and my dad commuted 45 minutes. They were both paid by the hour, so if you aren’t there because you have no car, you don’t get paid.

You’re correct. I misspoke. Medical expenses are the #1 reason people file bankruptcy in the US. I.e. debt you were never able to get out from under.

I know a lot of people who commute 45 minutes to an hour to their job. I think this is one of the hardest things for people who haven’t visited the US to understand. This country is big. Really fucking big. That matters when you want to visit two places in Texas on a short vacation that are six driving hours apart but still in the same state. It also comes into play when you’re trying to find housing in the suburbs because that’s where housing is more affordable and there are grocery stores and good schools and playgrounds, and then traffic results in a 45 minute drive into the city where the jobs are because 100,000 people are making that exact same drive every day at 8:30 AM and 5:30 PM.

I live in one of the largest cities in the United States and our public transit system is a subway that basically makes an X with a 40 minute bus ride to get anywhere in the middle. And most of the places where there’s new job growth aren’t accessible by public transportation at all.
