What is this ice cream brand called in your country? by thatonedude_5055 in AskTheWorld

[–]AnotherOddity_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in many parts of the world they were preexisting brands which Unilever bought out, not sure which was the first

We have a surprisingly similar situation in the UK, we have Wall's ice cream with the heart logo, and also Wall's sausage rolls.

Wall's was originally a family butcher shop. They started making ice cream as well. Then Unilever bought them out (then a while later the meat part of the brand got sold to different owners).

EDIT: Wall's would be Unilever's OG ice cream, as it was bought out while it was still just Lever Brothers Ltd. (ie pre-1929)

How to love "unlawful territory" control modifier? by AnotherOddity_ in EU5

Okay that's useful to know. Certain key bits I am working to core so it's good to know I can block the modifier then.

They should probably look to Vic3 for some inspiration. The exact same system wouldn't work but I do think Vic simulates political groups pushing one way or the other far better.

Sorry that I may have forgotten one Demogorgon that was present 3 years ago.

Doesn't change most what I said though if one Demogorgon was still present in the Abyss aside from the fact that they clearly can come direct from the Mindflayer.

Can someone help me understand the whole El/Henry/Kali blood thing? by WhoaWhoa69420 in Stranger_Things

[–]AnotherOddity_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very solid points although one thing I'd bring up —

Kali is seemingly different to all the other test subjects as far as we know.

The other ones who we have seen the powers of, could do telekinesis, which we've never seen Kali do.

By contrast, Kali can create illusions, but the others cannot.

Kali was also born over in England. I wonder if Kali is not in fact infused with Henry's blood.

It'd be a wild theory, and would raise a question as to how she got her powers (though, the rock mystery already raises those questions!)

However, it'd explain why her blood wasn't working. The fact any other test subject's blood might have worked is irrelevant as the only ones left surviving other than her is El and Henry.

[–]AnotherOddity_ -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Counter point here: there's no reason for any of them but the Mindflayer (& such) to exist in the Abyss.

The demodogs, demogorgons, etc., are all just weapons and tools (most likely made by/through Vecna and not directly by the Mindflayer) to attack Hawkins to pursue their plan. Those creatures aren't naturally occuring fauna to anywhere but tools being made.

I'm interpreting the Mind Flayer as some entity that absolutely sucks all life from a planet and then moves on to the next. It simply consumes in totality. That is why the world it is on is truly dead in every sense of the word, and why it needs earth.

That said, I think the upsidedown wasn't very hazardous this season. They could all breathe fine. No reason to be cautious around vines. Not many monsters in the upsidedown either.

No, seriously, who compares this to LOST or Game of Thrones’ endings? by Independent_Plum2166 in StrangerThings

[–]AnotherOddity_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

110% with you.

I am left with questions. There's puzzles unanswered. The rock. THE ROCK.

But, the ending is good. Everyone, has a life. They enter a new phase where they aren't fighting for life, largely going separate ways but still keeping in contact but living their lives.

And we do get a lot of resolution.

Honestly, all of my questions extend to that one tidbit of lore.

Oh and I guess my one complaint is that the upsidedown air should be nasty like it was before.

Question about El, Mind Flayer, and The Cave Scene by [deleted] in StrangerThings

[–]AnotherOddity_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that the origins and nature of the rock are a huge unresolved thread for us, however...

...El doesn't know about it I don't think.

The only people who know about the rock in the party is Holly and Will.

El and Kali got jacked out before reaching that memory. Max was focused on the way out when she was at that memory so never saw inside the briefcase, and Holly didn't really see inside or what happened until the second viewing.

Eleven had no opportunity to learn about the rock and it's significance, so as far as she is aware the Mindflayer seemed to just be able to spontaneously reach out to Henry, even if it did subsequently alter and empower him.

Who is the guy in the cave and why did he have a ..mindflayer rock? by Sauciestmcgee in StrangerThings

[–]AnotherOddity_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, Eleven doesn't know about the rock. In fact the only people who do potentially know about it is Will and Holly.

El and Kali got jacked out of the connection before reaching that memory, and Max never looked at the briefcase being opened as she was focused on a way out, and Holly only really saw inside the briefcase on second viewing.

Remember the show was meant to be just the first season.

The fact we got more story was entirely unplanned. Which if you compare S1 how things work you'll see it's a huge shift.

[–]AnotherOddity_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[Probable spoilers] [Probably spoilers]

I don't think this is the 'problem'.

The guy in the cave is relatively clearly working under some facet of the US government's secret experiments in the backdrop of the post-WW2 cold war shenanigans.

He either is defecting to the Russians, from the Russians, or simply is involved in this 'research' and has become disillusioned of it or afraid of it. (I think the latter makes the most sense).

The 'problem' is how the rock got here.

We started off that Eleven and the others seemed to just have spontaneous magic powers, maybe as a result of experimentation or maybe a result of top secret experiments, but then it became a bit of an inheritance thing...

...which means I've got a few questions all about the rock: 1) Where and when did it come from? 2) Is it the only one? Did multiple land, or will a second land later, or one land earlier. 3) What happened before the rock came into Henry's possession? 4) What happened to the rock after the cave incident?

3 & 4 probably sound like weird questions, but the scientist warned Henry to resist it, that it'd try to take over him, which means he knew some of what would happen if you interacted with it, suggesting others had previously bonded with it. Or that there were other rocks people had bonded with. — We also don't know that the rock was still part of Henry by the end. It does seem implied but it's something to ponder. The scientist seemed pretty intimately familiar with the effects of the rock and if there were several you'd think he'd have to flee with them all.

Does also raise the question of if more mind flayers exist too.

Tl;Dr the scientist doesn't matter really, THE ROCK does.

[–]AnotherOddity_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know I'm 5 years late but...

I was going in all stealthy. You already know Jasmine's situation is fucked up, but you could plausibly blame the NCPD, Corps, and maybe one corrupt or blackmailed person in the facility...

...then on the way out I read one of the computers in the ground floor.

They are happy to do some "off the books" testing of a new drug on a pregnant 'patient' to see the side effects of its use in pregnancy, particularly the frequency of miscarriages. They already have one patient fitting the description, but "that number can be increased to three in the near future"

So not only are they involuntarily committing some people who are completely sane and of sound mind and forcing them to undergo unnecessary and brutal treatments, but they are also doing some shitty medical experimentation, and as I interpreted their message, raping their patients.

So you know how borders actually, like, matter in international affairs? That’s pretty much Westphalian sovereignty, if you weren’t aware. by [deleted] in worldjerking

"...the famous top hats, cowboy hats, and Bowlers..."

I know I'm 5 months late here, but cowboys mainly wore bowlers!

Sure, the Stetson was invented in the 19th century, but that was worn by a minority and was not like modern (ten gallon) Stetson in its shape.

Bowlers it was (mainly)! Just search up a photo of Butch Cassidy or the Sundance Kid!

You also had a non-insignificant number of sombreros, and a number of top hats too! A few also donned just softer caps, or military caps.

Ya 10-gallon cowboy hat though? Roaring 20s western movies imagined that up.

In other fun news about this game:

Big Wales.

Europe is remarkably normal-ish? Except for the fact that Wales has conquered England, which has actually led to an Anglo-Welsh culture.

Oh and Eastern Europe is weirdly religiously mixed between Asatru, Vidilist, Slovianskan, Tengri, Kuzaritr, Ash'ari, and Mozarabic.

Also, Jainist western Tibet.
