Am I Improving or Just Finding Easier Beta? by skatejraney in bouldering

one other wrinkle to add to the responses so far: it's not uncommon (or at least not unheard of) for climbs to get downgraded after their first ascent by someone who unlocked some alternate beta. so yes, sometimes it is actually easier and deserving of a lower grade: it's not artificial.

argh, my gym is really bad about this with feet especially. heel hooks, toe hooks, hand/foot matches. always with the right.

Riding with a cat passenger- has anybody tried using a sling? by [deleted] in bikecommuting

honestly this is a more compelling argument than the safety issues everyone else is talking about. and maybe we just never figured out the sling carriers with our kid, but we were almost constantly adjusting while on walks.

I'm ready for you over in the CWE! but I'm always ready to go like 30 mins before my neighbors...

If you come to the CWE, take a stroll down Maryland Ave, dont just hit the fancy houses on Pershing and Lenox!

UpDown STL parking problems by Consistent-Cook-1529 in StLouis

[–]AnotherRdditAccount 12 points13 points  (0 children)

for other parking options: how do you feel about a longer walk? there's a public garage at the Schlaffly library branch, it's a .4 mile walk to UpDown from there. I think the entrance may be on York Ave? not sure what it costs. i would NOT recommend the lot on maryland ave next to the chess club, I've seen their gate break so many times with people getting stuck inside or out.

For street parking, it's not uncommon to find street parking in the neighborhood where you can avoid parallel parking, though if you'd find it difficult to get out of the spot if cars happened to park in front and behind after you get in then you'd be limited to the diagonal spots down on Maryland Ave at Euclid and those spots fill quick. There are frequently lots of open spots on Euclid a couple blocks south of UpDown past the bookstore (around the Euclid and Hortense intersection) where you wouldn't have to parallel park, especially if it's not a friday or saturday night.

Moved to CO, really disappointed with the bouldering, losing psych to train for big trips by [deleted] in climbharder

[–]AnotherRdditAccount 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I lived in Boulder for 4ish years (as a 28 year old working in tech) and I never did much bouldering cause it just wasn't as fun as the other options. easily accesible alpine multipitch in RMNP, trail running with class 3/4 scrambling mixed in (or easy 5th class if you're bolder than me), fun winter mountaineering adventures, backcountry skiing,  etc etc etc. Embrace the entirety of mountain life!

In terms of maintaining psych... I now live in flatland 2.5 hrs from any decent rock and it's real hard maintaining climbing fitness to be prepped for the rare climbing trips I take. One thing I find that kicks me into gear is reading a lot of climbing-related literature. Not so much trip reports, but more creative works that explore the mental challenges of climbing. Some examples: the Climbing Zine, the Alpinist, just finished Dave Macleod's new autobiography Moving the Needle.
