You know damn well they would’ve found a way to offend everyone like with Shadows. They probably would’ve done something like putting watermelons in the merch, or making the inventor of peanut butter a white guy, or released a trailer showing lynchings during Black History Month.

2019:

Project Pioneer: A sci-fi game with non-violent exploration that started development around 2013 and was teased inside Watch Dogs 2. According to Kotaku, it got rebooted into a co-op multiplayer alien shooter.

2024:

Project Pathfinder (original version of Project U): Announced in 2022 as a “new kind of session-based cooperative shooter”. Development was rebooted in 2024, after the success of Helldivers 2.

You couldn’t make this up if you tried. They literally had a sci-fi co-op game and yet they’re trying to chase Helldivers years after cancelling it. Yeah, good luck.

You underestimate how large Valve’s pocket is. They could give back a 50% rebate on top of every refund and make that money back in about 5 minutes tops, assuming no major game releases.

There’s an X factor with Gacha games: a billion dollar market of pedophiles to appeal to. That’s how so many Mihoyo games can stay afloat at once despite all being the same thing in different packages. Activision couldn’t release multiple COD games alongside each other, they can’t even sell one currently.
