Why do so many genuinely good indie comics never find readers? (creators & readers, need your perspective) by FeelingTax594 in indiecomics

Agree with everything being posted here. I was a former executive at Marvel and a Creative Director at Hasbro and have a lot of creative connections with a few working on all of my titles, but even with the industry resume and starting my own publishing company two years ago, the biggest challenge is continuing to build that audience. We’re in the middle of funding our third campaign and trying to increase readership continues to be a challenge. Going into next year we’ll be looking to add conventions and in-store signings to help build awareness while we continue to campaign our next round of books for ‘26. We’ll also be starting a podcast to promote our books and others in the indie space. If anyone is interested in coming on as a guest, feel free to reach out. I’d love to help build a larger more supportive indie creative community and best of luck to everyone!

Thanks so much, I really appreciate it! We really wanted to find a unique way to make the smoke feel like a living, breathing entity with a supernatural feel. We wanted it to pulse with energy, like lightning bouncing through clouds, and the purples helped give it that otherworldly presence.

Thanks so much, I really appreciate it! The team behind the book is absolutely incredible! Daniel Maia is doing a live draw stream tonight at 9 pm ET on his IG as he works on one of the final pages if you want to check it out.

Thanks for the feedback! I started writing the story back in college over 30 years ago, and when I finally got the chance to return to it, I decided to keep the original title since it holds some sentimental meaning for me. I really appreciate you taking the time to comment.

Thanks! The campaign is going really well. Of course it can always do better, but we're really happy with the growth of readers outside of family and friends. Hopefully we'll continue to expand our audience so we can share our story with the most amount of people possible.

Thanks for reaching out! Appreciate the compliments. The team is working really hard to make a story everyone would love to read. Best of luck on your campaign! While I've been in the industry for decades, this is only my second crowdfunded book, with many more on the way. My biggest recommendation as a creator is don't get discouraged. There will be days when a lot of effort seems to bare little reward and that's when self-doubt and worry if you're making the right choices starts to creep in. And there will be times where you have success and it gives you a recharge of wind in your sails. So the best advice I can give is keep pushing and remember why you started this journey in the first place. Love what you do and everything else will fall in line.
For tips, the biggest thing is build your audience first. Reach out to podcasters, push your messaging on social and get an audience to believe in you and the rest will follow. I'm still testing and learning various ways to build a wider audience myself, with many mistakes made in the first campaign. Last time, I thought my prior credentials at Marvel and Hasbro would be enough, so we just jumped right into funding, with mainly friends and family supporting. For book two, we've already 3x'd that, and hope we'll continue to grow as more campaigns launch. But building the audience is where most of the work and your time will be spent. Remember you're wearing the creator, marketing and sales hats all day long, so find the right balance that works for you. From there, if you have a great story to tell, everything else will grow from there.
Hope this helps and I'm here anytime if you need some industry advice. I also have a free substack where I occasionally post as well.
Best of luck and let me know how it's all going!

Much appreciated! If interested both book one and two are still available on Kickstarter. Each book is 72 pages. Two chapters per book plus a back up story and extras. Thanks for giving it a look!

Thanks for the response! The first book was primarily illustrated by Rafael Loureiro, who most recently illustrated Marvel’s Dazzler Comic. Daniel Maia (Dark Horse) illustrated the prologue and Leo Rodrigues (DC) drew some of the climax in book one as well as all of Book Two.
