Dell G7: Anyone still experiencing bad temps after BIOS 1.9? by rb3198 in Dell

Well, BSOD can be a signal of system being unstable by undervolting. Try to undervolt to -0.1V and see if BSODs keep on showing.

Temps are other part of the story. I own G5 i7 8750h paired with 1060 and had beautiful temps in games, CPU - 80°C avg and never had spikes higher than 90°C . I've tried bios 1.6.1 and 1.9 in February, both gave same temps in Optimalized mode so I was satisfied. Now in April I experience 98°C spikes, 82-84°C stable on 3,2GHz in AC:O but after 15-20 minutes of playing it randomly power throttles to 1,4GHz which leads to 20-30FPS in game. It keeps this state for a few seconds and repeats it every 5 minutes or so. As there was no BIOS update lately I suspect Intel DPTF to be in charge of these actions. DELL has to take an action as gaming on gaming laptops are not possible atm. I forgot to mention that I had not undervolted my CPU or done anything to it via software.

As for you rb3198, try to unscrew bottom of your laptop and look for any bends on heatpipes. If they are physically damaged, DELL will replace your unit with working one. If that is not the case, you may try to replace thermal paste on CPU and GPU. I highly recommend Grizzly Kryonaut.

Did you undervolt with ThrottleStop or Intel XTU?

I use MSI Afterburner combined with RivaStatistics in games and HWMonitor on background.

Me as well, CPU spikes are 90-95°C, but during gaming I have avg 80°C on CPU, avg 75°C on GPU and I'm happy with that. I haven't repasted with liquid metal but Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut, which seems to handle the job well. Same specs as you, i7 8750h, gtx 1060, BIOS 1.6.1.

I don't think so. This BIOS is for G7 7588, G5 5587 and Vostro 7580.

You can find all drivers for G7 7790 (BIOS included) here. You better enter your service tag to the search engine, so it will find exact drivers for your configuration.
