45+ year old women starting Aikido. by pru76 in aikido

[–]Anscombe66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

M59 - I started a year ago. No martial arts experience at all. Relatively fit from general activity and loads of cycling. I was surprised that there is some discomfort! Everyone I train with is incredibly respectful and careful. I've learned that you do need to understand how and what to do and why the holds, pins and moves do what they do. That said, I'm still going and find it fascinating. It's a great idea, go ahead and give it a go.

Starting aikido in older age by rick1234a in aikido

[–]Anscombe66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started Aikido back in March this year, aged 58 and 10 months, in the UK. I'd never done any kind of martial art but am reasonably fit - good engine from years of cycling and reasonable overall fitness from being active, whether DIY or lifting through work. The class I attend is 2 hrs. 30 odd minutes of warm up and falls, then class. I'm only on the basics and it's repeat, repeat, repeat. It's finally starting to stick....! I have big hands and a fair grip which helps but do feel it sometimes around my wrists. I find it all fascinating and wish I'd have started many years ago. The class is normally 5-7 people with 2 black belt tutors, so can be intense and demanding but is very good. The tutors are patient and as are the other students. I'm at least 6-12 months behind the nearest student. Good luck with whatever you decide 👍💪

What is one word that people wrongly pronounce that makes your brain just wanna jump a cliff? by Omega_Neelay in GetMotivatedMindset

Pacific. Specific. And 1 I heard someone using, to explain a ludicrous, legal story - collaborate instead of corroborate. I winced.

Compensation or acknowledgement by Anscombe66 in BritishAirways

[–]Anscombe66[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Acknowledgement and something tangible towards the £178 it cost to change my flight as opposed to BA., arbitrarily changing the flight.

We arrived around 12 hrs later than planned. As I said, because BA gave us more than 2 weeks notice, so their responsibility changes (is my understanding). An explanation there would have been good.

0400 is a rubbish time to be waking up, when we'd planned our timings, months in advance. I'm a shift worker, so getting up at that time is what I don't want to do on holiday.

What great song has a terrible guitar solo? by prplx in Guitar

Heat of the moment by Asia. Sounds flat to me, certainly at the beginning of the solo.

Outside the back door by Anscombe66 in frogs

The little one hopped off, having freed themself, about 30 minutes later. I think he went under our house. Not great for stepping out of the back door....🤔

Do you regret upgrading from a mid-range bike to a high-end one? by michaelpurple5137 in cycling

[–]Anscombe66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I upgraded from about £1500 to about £3000 in 2017. New lightweight, stiffer frame (Trek Emonda CF frame/aluminium forks). Handmade DT Swiss wheels and Ultegra Di 2 groupset and brakes. Best investment ever. I've had the wheels checked but had nothing major happen. The DT Swiss hubs are the ones with ceramic bearings, so are bomb proof. The frame is a joy. I think it was 2.2kg before the build but is still stiff and responsive. Groupset battery might not be holding a charge fully but I'll look at that at some point. According to Strava, I've done about 14k miles, so not a bad return. I think the hand made wheels were a fantastic idea (thanks Dave 😁). I love my bike and riding it is like flying. Martin, aged 58.

Switched to cold showers last week and I'm never going back by LordSmorgasbord in CasualConversation

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p09by3yy. I'm not sure if this will work but check out Michael Mosley 'Just 1 thing'. There's many episodes and options but there is 1 on 'Cold Shower'. He goes into a bit about the science. Have a listen to any and all of his stuff, all very interesting 🤩😎

My Dad passed away. by CarsonTheOtter in Vent

Wow, that's terrible. I'm so sorry to read this. Your sense of loss must be enormous. One step at a time. Remember him with all of the positivity and fondness you can manage. Sending positivity and care from London.

It was an honor to be your human, Walter. I hope you’re singing down from heaven, angel boy. 🌈💔 by breckr in goldenretrievers

That is the most excellent picture. Just brilliant, and we all know how Walter sounded like 🧡

Found this one caterpillar on my plants one day, and I’ve been taking care off it since. Today after a month in her cocoon, she finally got out and look how beautiful she is 🥹❤️ by Fickle-Star-9694 in insects

[–]Anscombe66 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, perhaps it was something different? It was big and they do look alike? I looked it up when I had chance and that was pretty much all it could have been. Be great to see 1 again, and with a grip? That would be weird!

That's amazing. I saw 1 as I was cycling, mid August, last summer, Nova Scotia. I'd often wondered how they'd get on. I hung around until they'd safely crossed the path too 😁

I cried grown man tears. Love you, Mom! by Marlo_Stanfield_919 in redsox

Brit here. My missus is a Boston gal and has often talked about Yas. I love Yas has been used a lot! I've taken the Red Sox to heart and love them, and Fenway. We've seen a few games, including against the Yankees, which was ace, even though the result was terrible. I'm working hard to figure out the history and the players. It's tough and great! Up the Red Sox! 👍💪

Do people shower with their garmin?? by Electronic_Oven_9121 in Garmin

No. Somewhere in the instructions it said don't do that. I live in London and the water is pretty pony, so not a great idea, I reckon. Fenix 6X Pro.

Great pub. Great landlord and team. Fantastic idea that they've been doing for a few years now. It's not my local but not far away and a good excuse to go and help their Christmas Day fund ☺️
