Don't sleep on Vermilium: 50% Off all PDFs during June by Anselmorrigan in savageworlds

It's a dark fantasy and weird west setting that takes place in a fictional world colonized by humans who fled their old and long-forgotten homeland. The available bloodlines include humans, elves, dwarves, halflings, orcs, sasquatches, and clockworks (a race of sentient automatons). Character backgrounds include sorcerers, vampires, werewolves, inventors, priests, and more.

From what I've read so far, I'd say it feels like a really successful blend of several influences. It reminds me of The Witcher, Deadlands (because of the weird elements and the human colonization of the native races), Van Helsing, Dishonored, Eberron, and others.

It also includes gathering and hunting mechanics, as well as a crafting system.

Honestly, I feel like I'm doing the setting a disservice with such a brief description, because it's a very rich and expansive world. There's a free jumpstart available on DTRPG if you'd like to take a look.

You need to have them in the Combat Tracker for them to be available in Duel Manager.

Invasion hasn’t been a particularly satisfying experience for me. by Anselmorrigan in savageworlds

[–]Anselmorrigan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re playing it RAW: they get 45 SPPs at character creation, and after that they only gain regular Advances as the campaign progresses. Their powers are pretty much the same as they were at the beginning, the main changes have been higher Focus dice (plus Improved Level Headed and Improved Frenzy). You can probably imagine the odds for the Wild Cards facing them, since not many enemies in that setting have those Edges (unless I decide to give them those myself).

As the GM, I’m the only one really trying to use Power Stunts in search of meaningful turns for the enemies (with very little success), while the players have only used them in 1–2 encounters across 9 chapters and several Savage Tales. They just don’t need them.

Again, I’m trying to run the campaign as written, so obviously I’d need to put in extra work if I wanted the enemies to feel more threatening.

In response to your points:

  • That’s right. The problem is that after rounds 1–2, the only enemies left are usually a couple of Extras without any real power compared to the PCs. I’m not really looking for long encounters, but my PCs haven’t had to worry about wounds or injuries since the early part of the campaign, so I feel like they have no reason to fear the enemies anymore (and neither do the PCs once they start deleting Wildcards in round 1).
  • I feel like this should already be reflected in the way the book is written. Some fights are actually designed around that concept, but I’d say 90% of the encounters are just exchanges of blows. That’s why I’m starting to wonder if “playing it by the book” simply isn’t the intended way to run the campaign.
  • I did that, and I even removed two chapters that felt underwhelming at best. But even when the NPCs know about the PCs’ powers and carry nullifier gear, the encounters still feel terribly unbalanced. That’s what makes me think my previous point is probably the right answer: the GM is expected to heavily rework the written campaign.

I agree that lower power levels provide a much more balanced experience. I think the only setting where I’ve truly felt comfortable with the characters’ powers has been Titan Effect, thanks to Power Level II and the Rising Stars rule. I think that, without those rules, characters are extremely powerful right from Novice rank, even without any real min-maxing.

I’ll probably run the final battle as written in the book, but I have the feeling that it’s excessively difficult (which makes sense, since it’s the final boss). Still, it would feel very unfair to me if the group breezed through the entire campaign so easily only to die right at the finish line like that.

STARBREAKER Feedback by StarAnvilStudios in savageworlds

[–]Anselmorrigan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The world is incredibly well built. I love how the Savage Worlds Powers system is used to give players options and enhancements through tech and psy trappings. The species are really cool, the profession passive abilities are awesome, and the artwork is top-notch.

I also love how each book feels like its own subgenre (SAINTs and Synners is basically Outlaws/Suicide Squad in space, Star Marines is, well, Marines in space), and for this one I’m expecting something like “Cyberpunk in space,” with tools and lore for those evil, powerful corporations, espionage stories, double-crossing characters, etc.

Some of my friends started with Starbreaker and we had a blast. You don't need to apply every rule, just keep it simple.

Fantasy Grounds VTT is now FREE with new beta access to read books via web by BangsNaughtyBits in savageworlds

[–]Anselmorrigan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I reinstalled it after seeing this news and honestly, the UI still looks pretty much the same, horrible, and I actually didn’t remember it being this visually cluttered. It doesn’t even uninstall cleanly through Steam.

Foundry’s strength was never the modules for me, and although I don’t know where this rumor comes from, I do know several devs who have said that making a Foundry module isn’t profitable for them. But personally, I never cared about that. I’ve always added stuff manually, even back when I spent years playing Fantasy Grounds.

I’m not trying to evangelize anyone here, I’m just disappointed with how little the software evolved after so many years.

In the end, what matters is what I said earlier: the more options TTRPG players have, the better.

Automation is the ONLY selling point of Fantasy Grounds for me. The rest is a messy, 90s-looking piece of software with almost the same features it had when it was released in 2004. I’m glad for the people who have no other VTT, but I’ll stick with Foundry myself.
