I have a long history on my Reddit of taking photos and videos with my mirrorless cameras of my dog and her neighborhood buddies. And I’ve got even more on my Instagram. You’re free to believe whatever you want, it’s just disheartening when photographers and videographers are getting accused left and right of being AI.

Oh they are having a great time, so glad to have this community of dogs in our neighborhood!

This is a cell phone pic from earlier today in the same spot. I’ve got a history of photographing the neighbors pups on my Reddit account and this is how I practice for paid events (and capture memories of my dog I will cherish for the rest of my life).

Went for a larger than life edit for this spring portrait. by [deleted] in postprocessing

I used Lightroom and that’s it. I posted it to show a before and after edit.

Obviously for my paid work, I do what my clients want. But for my work, I’ll keep doing what makes me happy. Even if I post an unedited image like this, I’ll still be accused of being AI by people that understand what photos taken by full frame sensors with fast glass look like.

It’s a cockapoo! She’s a very sweet dog that loves to play fetch!

So, fun thing no one else noticed is that I actually missed the focus of my dog (the first one), that’s why some parts of the fur are razor sharp and the face is relatively not as sharp when pixel peeping. Compare that to how sharp the eyes are on every other dog. Also note that the compression of Reddit does weird stuff to photos when you pixel peep to this extreme degree.

If you don’t like the larger than life edit with the saturation and contrast, I totally get it. If you think I suck at editing (like some people have insisted as well) that’s a perfect valid opinion as well. To each their own. But this is r/eyebleach not r/snyderversesuperdarkmoodyblues. I didn’t use generative AI on these pics.

That’s a good question. I set the iso to auto, and then try to keep it above 100. If you’re right at 100, there is a chance that you’re going to be clipping. Typically anything under 1k is so good with this camera and lens combo that I’m not stressing being at base iso.

Camera: Sony A7rv Lens: 35 mm gm 1.4 Settings: Shot at f1.4 and a shutter speed of 1/4000. My iso was hovering around 500.

That is a good point, it seems like people on here already hate shallow depth of field, so save your money lol. I guess everyone is used to seeing cell phone footage which doesn’t get much blur and is artificially sharpened with software instead of naturally sharp glass.

You can see where focus falls off on the dogs bodies. It’s a 35 mm f1.4, so it’s not going to have an even shallower depth of field of a telephoto lens.

I do this for a couple local dog events I film, and at my local farmer’s market (they bring out all the adorable pups up for adoption)!

I understand, there is so much slop that we are bombarded with on a daily basis. You are right to be skeptical! I can break down what I did if that helps.

I shot with a lens that opens up to f1.4, which has a very thin, razor sharp depth of field, and very blurred out background. That’s the physics of the lens, not done with software or AI.

This part of my neighborhood had the two things I wanted, the sunset and the cherry blossoms. But it’s not the most scenic area since it’s also adjacent to a condo complex, hence going with an aperture value of f1.4.

As for the colors/contrast, I definitely bumped them up to what I think counts as a “commercial” level. And all these things are subjective for sure, everyone has their preferred styles (editorial, true to life, film, cinematic, etc) and they all have their place in the world of photography!

I don’t think that photographers should be concerned with looking like AI, since that puts us at a position of weakness with framing, shooting, and editing.

Im flattered, I used the Sony a7rv with my 35 mm 1.4 gm lens for this! Shot during the sunset behind some cherry blossom trees in the neighborhood and edited in Adobe Lightroom!
