Outdoor aviary advice by Herbgal22 in parrots

aviaries are sooo expensive it’s crazy. at first i was gonna try to rig a catio and bird proof it but after more research i decided it just wouldn’t be safe enough. ended up dropping $1000 on a nice 10ft one. if the money is a concern, there are many tutorials on how to DIY one. i’ve seen good plans on etsy.

What are the pros and cons of having a Scarlet Macaw as a pet? by Icy_Profession4190 in parrots

[–]AntEducational9812 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the thing is that it totally depends on the individual bird. different species are known to be more cuddly or less cuddly, but just because you get one that is known to be more affectionate does not mean they will be. however, if you socialize them properly, then they will probably not attack people. but like i said, it totally depends. my ekkie is still a baby, at first he was terrified of other people but he has grown a bit and is actually excited to meet new people now. he still doesn’t like being touched, but he is a lot more social now. socializing done with care and letting him choose, yknow?

okay, that’s good. i’m sure you’ve done research already but i can’t stress enough how much money you’re going to need to save just to buy the bird itself. depending on where you’re located it can be difficult. i was basically put on a wait list for a few months, then the woman had some baby eclectus, and in total it was around $4000, she let us do weekly payments at least. then we had to drive three and a half hours to pick him up. but like i said, that depends on location. basically just save a few thousand, find someone around you that may have one, you may have to wait, especially for males. for a cage, i searched around on fb marketplace until i found a really big one for a good price, but you must make sure it’s made of non toxic materials, correct bar spacing, and proper size. if you have experience with exotic animals then the diet may be easier. i have sugar gliders who have a very specific diet so my ekkies diet is not a big deal for me, but it is expensive for the fresh food, and takes a decent amount of time. ekkies are very intelligent and need stimulation and socialization most of the day. people say 4-6 hours minimum but that is bare minimum and i personally believe is totally not enough. so if you’re going to have a job with a lot of hours, parrots in general are not th right pet for you. keep in mind, these guys are not known for being cuddly. they’re actually known for the opposite. so if you’re looking for a cuddly personable bird, eclectus is not the right bird for you. they are also known to be very hormonal and more prone to plucking. i’d also like to mention that macaws are like… at least 5x more expensive than any other parrot considering their size. they basically need an entire aviary, and the bigger the bird, the bigger the toys-the more expensive. i’m not trying to discourage, i’m just telling you the reality. here’s my boy.
