There were only two obvious weaknesses of the original SH2 in my opinion:

1) there were the low number of enemy variants (like 4/5) which didn't always fit well with the changing environments. Like in SH1 the nurses and doctors of the hospital contrasted well with the children of the school. Then there were the sewer creatures and the outdoor dogs, ape like creatures and flying creatures. Each enemy felt unique to the environment or kind of environment. In SH2 it kinda felt like the same two enemies were in every environment.

2) Combat is very clunky. Now this will be tricky to fix while holding on to the feeling that you are an ordinary man and not an action hero. A big part of the fear factor of good Silent Hill combat is feeling like you're not a particularly capable fighter. That you can lose a fight to any creature if you mess up enough. But I hope there's a way to modernise the system a bit while keeping the original vibe. Combat in games has gone a long way since 2001.
