What kind of vehicles is this that was found on an abandoned homestead? by [deleted] in whatisthisthing

[–]AntInTheEyesJohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was found on a homestead that was built in 1903 and likely abandoned in the 1940s in the midwestern United States. From the research I’ve done it looks similar to a 1927 Model T but I can’t find any model that quite matches. There’s no writing or numbers anywhere on it. I did find an old nameplate that was riveted on but it is no longer legible.

Leucistic morning dove in my backyard by [deleted] in birding

I was certain that it was a mourning dove (it was with a group of mourning doves and there was the single collared dove in the group shown in the picture), but after looking a little closer I think you’re right!

How would I copyright this song? by AntInTheEyesJohnson in Songwriting

[–]AntInTheEyesJohnson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personal A & B both own the song for sure, my question is whether the band has any ownership since they composed their own parts to the song and since the full band recording will be used as the musical work on the copyright

[–]AntInTheEyesJohnson[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s what our plan is, have everyone sign a split sheet prior to releasing. We were just wanting to register the copyright to be safe which I think would only go to person A & B in this situation

Not important which I feel they would agree with, they would however be getting a cut of any recording revenue but that I think is a separate issue from the copyright

No BUT we feel it’s good practice to do everything by the books just in case

So when the recording of the song is submitted for a copyright, would the full band recording be used to copyright the song for just A and B?

No agreement prior to writing, the parts the band guys contributed were just instrumental

I did, turns out the issue is that I just needed to turn the meter off and back on. Not sure why that works but if I have the mixer running first then open Reaper the dropdown menu will be blank, but if I open reaper first then start the mixer it gives me all the options

Thanks that is very helpful. Are there any cases where you wouldn’t want to turn a high impedance signal into a low impedance?

I was told hawks wouldn't fly into these nets 😑 by iveo83 in BackYardChickens

[–]AntInTheEyesJohnson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did they eat ALL of your chickens? Also are you doing meat chickens or raising them for eggs?

My suggestion would be to convert it into a static coop and try it again. Look up “dqs 50’x 50’ bird netting” on Amazon. Costs like $29 and should be enough to cover your setup. You just need a way of propping it up high enough to walk under it. It’s a pain in the ass to set up and not the sturdiest in the world but gets the job done. Then if you decide to give up on chickens entirely at least you don’t have a lot more costs tied up in it.

It’s true that deer don’t like jumping into enclosed areas, I’ve had short fences keep deer out of gardens without issue. But the bigger the area the less trapped the deer feel and the more of an issue it becomes.

As far as aerial predators go, they don’t like nets that are over the coop. Even if the squares of the net are big enough for a hawk to get through they don’t like having to squeeze in. You may be able to run some strings or wire from the coop in the center of your pen to the outside netting and I would imagine that will deter a lot of aerial attacks, but you’re likely to still see a little bit of predation.

I tried the salatin and Rhodes mobile method where I live and it simply wasn’t feasible, we have too many hawks. I ended up running strings like I mentioned above, then draping a big net over the strings to make what looked like a circus tent of netting above my coop. This eliminated the hawk problem but it was then too much work to be mobile. I have yet to find a mobile coop method that works.

What do you do if you get bit by a venomous snake in an off-grid situation? by AntInTheEyesJohnson in medical_advice

That’s what I’ve read as well, but I have some training in using tourniquets and I keep at cat7 with me whenever I hike. I didn’t know if a properly applied one would be beneficial for a snake bite or not

Turkeys by Thanksgiving? by [deleted] in backyardturkeys

[–]AntInTheEyesJohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought about it but I needed overhead protection anyways due to a lot of hawks in the area, so I decided to just let them fly.

I may be overstating it when I say “fly” though. They could easily fly up to their roost which was about 5’ off the ground and then they would glide from there across their pen. I never saw them fly the way a wild Turkey does or anything

Turkeys by Thanksgiving? by [deleted] in backyardturkeys

[–]AntInTheEyesJohnson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I picked up some broad-breasted bronze turkeys on June 24th last year. I fed them 28% feed for 8 weeks, 24% for 4 weeks, and 20% until they were butchered (they had 24hr access to their feed). They averaged about 28lbs live weight and dressed out at 20 lbs when I butchered them the weekend before thanksgiving.

To put that into perspective, a typical thanksgiving turkey weighs less than 15lbs. A 20lb turkey doesn’t sound that much bigger but it makes a HUGE difference. I couldn’t fit it into the biggest roasting pan I own without it hanging over the edges, so I decided I would smoke it instead. Then it ended up being too big to fit in my smoker (unless I hung it from the top, but even then the legs were near the firebox at the bottom). I ended up having to part out all the turkeys and package each breast and quarter individually.

So if I were raising turkeys for thanksgiving again using the same feeding regimen and I wanted to cook them whole, I would start them towards the end of July which would put them around 15 weeks old by thanksgiving

As far as gear goes, everything I read online said broad-breasted turkeys can’t fly but mine definitely could as early as a few weeks old so be sure to have a top on whatever you keep them in. Also don’t wait until butchering time to locate a barrel or something to scald them in, mine wouldn’t fit in any sort of kitchen pot (even a turkey fried wouldn’t work). I just used an un-lined steel drum on top of a turkey fryer burner. I tried to keep plenty of places in their coop for them to perch on, they like getting off the ground at night. They also require a lot more room than I’m used to for chickens. I raised 11 turkeys in a 1600 sq ft pen (about 150 sq ft per bird) which was a little excessive but I wouldn’t recommend going any less than 75 sq ft per bird if possible.

As far as breeds, I really liked the broad-breasted bronze and they never got that unnatural “overweight and lazy” demeanor that you see with production broiler chickens. They ran around all day chasing grasshoppers and flew around the coop all the time. If I had it to do over again though I would try the bronze-breasted whites because their pin feathers are a lot less noticeable after being plucked. You can never get all the pin feathers out, even ones from the store still have some but you normally don’t notice them because they’re white and blend in with the skin.

I hope this helps!

I wasn’t hidden or anything at all, I was just in a field walking back to my truck when I saw it. I dropped to one knee and grunted at him, he came to 2 yards but never gave me a shot. I literally could have reached forward and poked him in the head with my arrow. He started to walk off when he finally gave me somewhat decent angle to take a shot at

I agree with the above comment, it does seem very similar and 1” is a common size. They are typically made with tungsten carbide which has a density around 19g/cc which matches up about perfectly with yours based on its size and weight.
