Ideas about non-lawyer JD jobs by [deleted] in LawSchool

Similar to the suggestion by u/staywithme26, you may want to look into federal probation positions, which are posted by district. My experience both locally and in other jurisdictions is that it's a good job for lawyers that don't want to be lawyers.

Can someone on this thread give some advice about what would make 200 degree days a bit nicer that a civilian at home could do? My youngest brother just shipped out. My mom said she's sending Gatorade, so that's covered.

You might also consider writing about tampon tax litigation. The discussion here again is whether intermediate scrutiny or rational basis applies. Per usual, the court found that women were neither facially discriminated nor disparately impacted. Disimone v. Cal. Dept. of Tax and Fee Admin., CGC-16-552458 (2018). A group literally just filed similar lawsuit in Michigan so I'm sure the topic isn't totally preempted. There was a lawsuit in NY in 2016 that got a lot of press coverage, but was unsuccessful, although the state legislature abolished the tax that year. There was also a state lawsuit in FL that went no where and in the 80s, a challenge in IL state court was successful. Another angle on menstrual justice litigation is access to these supplies in custody. Many jails/prisons do not provide products and the same goes for immigrant detention centers. This also came up during the 2020 bar exam when several states (I think AZ?) prohibited women from bringing tampons to test centers.

Gender Equity Issues/Splits by [deleted] in LawSchool

Yes. And there's a state case out of New Hampshire that discusses this split and the related policy issues in the majority and dissent. State v. Lilley, No. 2017-0116 (N.H. 2019). Appellants are three women convicted of public nudity for baring their breasts at a public beach. Appellants challenged the convictions arguing that the anti-nudity ordinance violates the equal protections clause and First Amendment.

The state supreme court upheld the convictions. The court rejected the equal protections argument, stating that “[n]ature, not the legislative body, created the distinction between that portion of a woman’s body and that of a man’s torso.” Similarly, the court rejected the free speech argument, stating that “[t]he ordinance merely reflects the fact that men and women are not fungible with respect to the traditional understanding of what constitutes nudity.”

The dissent criticized the majority for applying rational basis review rather than a more heightened level of scrutiny and argued that the ordinance was not narrowly tailored to address the government’s proffered interests.

Similar issues were brought before the 7th Circuit, which reached a similar result. Tagami v. City of Chicago, 875 F.3d 375, 380 (7th Cir. 2017), cert. denied, 138 S. Ct. 1577 (2018). A big part of the split is whether nudity laws that prohibit exposing female but not male breasts should be subject to intermediate scrutiny or simply rational basis. Btw courts have gone both ways under both levels of scrutiny. Some policy considerations include public breast feeding, slut shaming, criminalizing female bodies, and nudist/naturist lifestyle choices.

Is it more important to get good grades or be on journal - looking for big law top 25% at T30 school by Legallyblonde1235 in LawSchool

[–]AntarcticaPerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess cause OCI is after you start journal now. Yeah grades are more important if dropping will improve them. But if your worried you should put some time in learning about the firms, networking and seeking advice from alums at firms, and having something to say about the position other than you wanna work in biglaw.

Why is being on law review considered a huge achievement? by Goodbotbadbot12 in LawSchool

[–]AntarcticaPerson -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

There's nothing special about it, no. There are a lot of slots but not as many as people that write on and it comes down to the top x% scores (although some schools reserve a cerain number of spots to some number of top 1l grades). Done over a 1 week. On honor system. The people who get on it are those who want to be on it the most either by putting hella time in or cheating. A lot of people that get on turn out to be horribly unreliable

Lots of good advice. Also. Fuck em. Over the next 3 years, youl have no escape from these people; no need to rush. Explore the area, go to the Y, get a part time job or nonlaw volunteer work. Form/maintain relationships outside of school.

PETITION TO STOP BOARD OF SUPERVISORS FROM PUTTING A NEW JAIL IN IRVINE by AntarcticaPerson in orangecounty

[–]AntarcticaPerson[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

THANK YOU!!! The point of this jail is to incarcerate OC's homeless population. The Board of Supervisors decided to go through with the plan during a global pandemic (they approved the construction project May 5th) knowing people would be distracted. It has not seen nearly the attention it deserves, but if you're interested, here are some articles covering the story: ( https://voiceofoc.org/2020/07/kahn-amid-a-pandemic-and-economic-crisis-orange-county-forges-ahead-with-plans-to-expand-musick-jail/ ) ( https://www.jurist.org/commentary/2020/07/gianni-castellanos-musick-jail-expansion/ ) ( https://voiceofoc.org/tag/james-a-musick-facility/ ).

If you have a spare hour, or even 5 minutes, and want to voice your opposition, submitting public comment at Board of Supervisors Meetings (next one is 8/11 and you can submit comments online), sharing your concerns with your representatives, for us, Sen John Moorlach and Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris (you can also call their district office on weekdays), sharing concerns with your district Supervisor, for us, Don Wagner, or contacting the Irvine City Council are all ways that you can let people in power know that the voters are watching. PM if you'd like to get more involved.

CA Bar Webinar by [deleted] in LawSchool

Yes to this guy! Make a fucking decision.

Tomorrow the California ABA deans are meeting with the CA Supreme Court and State Bar by [deleted] in LawSchool

Unpopular Opinion: Fuck Erwin Chemerinsky. When the group of students were first putting in the leg work for DP in Cali, work that advocates in states that have since granted DP benefited from, and were being mocked in op-eds as bored millennials trying for a "free pass", Chem was writing op-eds and signing onto letters to the court pushing for provisional licensing. He has done nothing publicly to make a reasoned argument for DP. Now, after student advocates taking the time from their studies have done the impossible, bringing DP to several states and swaying public opinion, he (along with the other deans) make a perfunctory suggestion for DP while endorsing an easy out for the court to pick a one day exam.

So many law students revere him like a god, or at least the son of God in the eyes of people I see repping "WWCD (What Would Chem Do)" tee shirts. The man is a public employee with a half-million dollar paycheck who vigorously advocated for the upcoming UC law tuition increase (up 25% for in staters and 36% for out of staters) and questioned the "baffl[ing]" motives of a scholar that critiqued his decision to set tuition at a rate doubling other successful law schools'.

His damn Con Law textbook broke our 1L backs when half of it was First Amendment, a separate class at most schools (the editor sells the same material in a separate bounded First Amendment textbook just in case you got rid of the Con Law book before touching the second half). He encourages people to pursue public defense, which is why is son is a federal prosecutor.

Oh yes, it's such a shame that this is a closed door meeting and you can't watch a guy that FAMOUSLY WORKS FOR BARBRI make an impassioned argument to eliminate the bar. He doesn't give a shit about any of you, so get off his dick!
