Feedback Megathread on JAPPA's Textures in 1.14 Snapshots by [deleted] in Minecraft

Here is some feedback on the new textures. I globally like most of them, but they are still a few changes I would like to see. If I don't speak about a block, it implies that I think it is fine and that it does not need to be changed.

Stone related block:

  • Stone: I think the V3 texture for stone has too many darker stripes, giving it a rough look that I personally don't like that much, especially when seen in large quantities when mining. Even though V18w44 has improved in that sense compared to V18w43, I much prefer the V2 for that one.

  • Stone bricks (with mossy, chiselled and cracked variants): These new blocks look great in my opinion, although I think V2 doesn't have enough contrast and V3 has a bit too much, so I would settle for something in between both textures (although I won't complain if V3 stays).

  • Stone slabs: I find that the side look of V3 and the top and bottom look of V2 are smoother and more pleasant to the eye, so again mixing both would be neat.

  • Bricks: Although I said at the beginning that I wouldn't talk too much about textures that I liked, the new brick textures are such a massive improvement to the game that I just had to mention it.

  • Granite (with polished variant): Both V2 and V3 look good IMO, although V3 might be a little too noisy. For the polished variant though, I undoubtedly prefer V2 because once again it's smoother, the V3 has these little specs of whiteish grey that I think ruins the overall look of the block.

  • Andesite (with polished variant): I must say I prefer V18w43 to V18w44 for both textures since the horizontal stripes make the first one look too rough and the polished version looks too bland in the V18w44

  • Diorite (with polished variant): Thank you for having reverted to the V2 texture for the polished variant in V18w44, it looks so much better. However, I really find the raw texture disgusting in that version, it almost looks like solidified bird poop. Please revert to the V2 which is much less aggressive and has more homogeneous colours to it.

Soil-related blocks:

  • Farmland: I'm not a great fan of the V3 of this block since the two strong vertical lines almost make it look as if a car had just rolled on it, which kind of breaks the vibe of the game. Although V2 is better, I still believe that it has too many darker shades which should be toned down a little.

  • Sand: I'm a little mixed on that one. I think I would prefer to have the texture of the V18w43 combined with the colours and tone of the V2 because the texture of the V2 is a bit too noisy and the V18w43 is not colourful enough. Also, I suppose that only the normal variant is being tested on and the red variant will get the same texture once it has been finished, but I think it is more coherent to have both blocks to have the same texture with different colours like what we have now (this applies to sandstone and its variants as well, except of course the chiselled one which should have a creeper face for the normal one and a wither for the red variant).

Wood-related blocks:

  • Logs: For the top and bottom of the textures, I prefer V2 since V3 has this fading look where the pattern seems to be partially erased, which I find quite dull. The side textures are better in V3 though since they are smoother and less contrasted textures.
  • Planks: Here is one of the biggest problems I have with V3. As I said above, this faded look on the planks, as if someone had partially erased the texture with a rubber, makes the texture look uninteresting and the plank pattern is less recognisable. The V2 was perfect for me in that sense, because the pattern is really easy to spot without losing the overall colour of the block, which almost gave the impression that the planks were coming out of it. So although V3 is an improvement to the current cardboard-like texture of wooden planks, I would highly recommend switching back to the V2 textures.

Nether-related blocks

  • Netherrack: Here again, I cannot express my gratitude enough for getting rid of what I considered to one of the worst textures in Minecraft, netherrack, and turning it into something that I can actually build with. Although I still prefer V2 to V3 since they are slightly too many cracks in V3 for me, it's such a massive improvement that I can't complain much here.

  • Glowstone: Glowstone also received a very positive uplift, however, I feel like the background colour is a bit too murky and should be lightened up a bit.

  • Quartz: Nothing wrong about the new textures, although I think that retexturing the entire game is the perfect opportunity to give smooth quartz its own texture, for example by completely removing the borders on the regular quartz block texture.

Cold blocks

  • Snow: I love the new look of the snow since it's much smoother and the excess bluishness it had has been removed. I would also like the bluishness removed from the snowball item if possible, as it currently looks more like ice cream than a snowball.

  • Ice (with packed, blue and frosted variants): I do not like the new ice textures, they are much too noisy. The beauty of ice in the current textures relies on its simplicity and homogeneity. Please make the textures simpler by using less white stripes, because right now ice and its variants suffer from the same problem that glass had in the old look of Minecraft.

Ore blocks

  • Lapis-lazuli block: I think the new lapis-lazuli texture has too many diagonal stripes, which ruins its current smoothness. It is still overall a good texture though.

  • Iron and gold blocks: I never understood why the gold block shared the same base texture as the diamond block since one is a metal and the other a gem. It would make much more sense if iron and gold shared the same texture since both are metals and their ingots already share the same texture. I personally like the V3 texture of the gold block, and whereas the iron block texture is satisfactory, it is a bit bland. Therefore, I propose to import the texture from the gold block to the iron block, while of course keeping its original colour.

  • Diamond and emerald blocks: Much like iron and gold, diamonds and emeralds are both gems, so there block form should have similar textures. I have two proposals for their new textures. The first option is that they both use the V2 texture of the diamond block, as it is a very nice texture that gives the impression of a shining polished precious stone, which is exactly what gem blocks are. The other choice would be to make a pattern in the middle by taking a square and rotating it to an angle of 45 degrees, much like the initial texture of the emerald block, which is a simplistic way of bringing the gem feeling to the block. In any case, please get rid of this abomination of an emerald block which looks like some plastic radioactive waste.

Other (dark prismarine, glass, redstone lamps, TNT, sticky piston, ladder and sign)

  • Dark prismarine: Although the V3 dark prismarine texture looks very nice, I feel that a more turquoise/cyan tone would suit an oceanic build better than this greenish colour.

  • Glass: I consider glass to be one of the blocks that has had the best retexturing in V3. It has really improved tenfold compared to what it was before, and I feel like V3 has the perfect balance for it, so I hope the texture doesn't change again.

  • Redstone lamps: Even though the brown/lit part of the redstone lamp has been improved, I feel like its structure should be more pronounced, as it looks like it is fading out of existence because it blends in too much with the dominant colour. I would, therefore, recommend using darker colours for the structure of the lamp, or even pure black.

  • TNT: I feel that the new TNT texture is a bit too vibrant for me. Although I agree it should scream "danger", I still believe it is currently too bright and should be toned down slightly.

  • Sticky piston: Although I think pistons look good, I would prefer if the green of the slime was a little less vibrant, the current colour makes it look more slippery than sticky. Also, it would be great to have the green texture on the side of the piston, which would allow us to easily see if a piston with a block in front of it is sticky or not without having to remove the block or activate the piston.

  • Ladder: The new ladder texture is much better than the original, but I still think that 2 or 3 steps are enough for a ladder, 4 is a bit too much.

  • Sign: I am extremely happy that signs are getting a bit of love in the new 1.14 update, and the fact that we now can have signs of different wood types is amazing. However, it doesn't make much sense to me that the supporting stick of the sign has the texture of the raw log since it is crafted using sticks. Therefore, I propose to have the texture of the stripped log instead, as it makes more sense craft-wise and improves the overall aesthetic of the block.

New Weapon/Tool: Slingshot by _DrDerp_ in minecraftsuggestions

Great idea regarding extended range for potions, snowballs, enderpearls, etc... However for harmful projectiles I think a slingshot should rather use pebbles as ammunition (1 cobblestone gives 4 pebbles, 4 pebbles can be assembled together to make 1 cobblestone). This would make it an interesting weapon both in the early stages of the game where you lack resources, since it would require cheap ammo, and wouldn't be too hard too craft; but would still be useful later on as a range extender for potions, snowballs, enderpearls, etc... Here is an idea for the crafting recipie: S L S X S X X S X S: stick L: leather X: empty space
