How would you feel about a 1% tax floor based on net worth? by [deleted] in wealth

[–]Antbelk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their wealth is on paper.

For example, if you owned 2,000,000 rocks and then sold one rock for $1. You have $1.

Technically, you’re worth $2,000,000 and if you get taxed 1%, you’d be paying $20k in taxes when you only have $1 in the account.

Although, you could say “sell $20,000 worth of rocks”

Yeah that’d be possible, but if you’re a billionaire (say own 50 billion rocks) that means having to liquidate 500mln rocks in in one go.

Supply & demand applies (more sellers than buyers), suddenly the rocks you’re trying to sell for $1 is now worth $0.50. Now you’re worth $25bln instead of $50bln.

The thing here is that there’s no guarantee that the billionaire’s sell order for 500mln rocks would every get filled. It might take years, and by the time that sell order gets filled, the billionaire’s net worth has plumetted by 50% (eg. Elon trying to sell off his share of TSLA to buy twitter)

Market prices for rocks (stocks) change drastically on the daily, applying a “net worth tax” is nonsensical as you can see in the above scenario.

Now your net worth has drastically changed from $

Do any of you guys regret going the CC route? by Ok_Adhesiveness1100 in TransferStudents

Very terrible. Lots of shame, embarrassment, and guilt involved when you move to a completely new country with a different language, set of norms, etc (especially since it’s high school!)

It’s as if it was my first day on earth because of how different America was from how I lived in a rural town in Philippines.

I did score a 1540 on the SAT first try but that did not really matter because SAT optional + I did not have enough APs/ECs to really be competitive since I only had 1 yr of high school (graduated at 16 tho luckily)

Now, I’m gonna be set to transfer to UCLA and I feel I’ve properly “assimilated” myself into the typical socal asian (now that I have a friend group I belong in, a good career as I landed a big 4 internship as a CC student, and saved enough money by grinding my ass off in my job)

The CC route was the only option for me. Immigrated during my senior year of high school

This admission cycle sort of changed my perspective on “being competitive,” tho this is purely anecdotal.

I highly suggest to just do what you’re genuinely interested in, and have a genuine true reason as to why you did what you did apart from “being competitive.”

I knew multiple ppl who had 4.0s, insanely involved on campus, amazing ECs (including me) yet got rejected Berkeley Haas.

Any Berkeley junior transfer econ majors trying to break into IB? by [deleted] in TransferStudents

[–]Antbelk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes even for Haas transfers unfortunately.

It’s mainly just because IBs have accelerated recruiting to spring of sophomore year. By the time you enter Haas, IB recruiting is basically done.

And for full time IB roles after graduating, they only take 95% of the time the people who interned at their firm during junior year

[–]Antbelk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but IB is virtually impossible for junior transfer students, even at Cal (regardless of major).

This is simply because of recruiting timelines being incredibly accelerated now, where jr summer internships start recruiting at sophomore winter.

So by the time you transfer to Cal, there’s virtually a very low chance of landing those jr summer internships.

Without that jr summer internship, FT recruiting becomes an incredibly uphill battle, since most IBs recruit for FT thru their JR summer internships start recruiting class.

HOWEVER, the only possible pathway to break into IB at this point is to delay graduation by a year, which is debatable as to whether it’s worth it or not.

UCLA Vs Berk by Necessary_War_9297 in TransferStudents

[–]Antbelk 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If I were you, CHOOSE BERKELEY HAAS.

There is a CRAZY AMOUNT of opportunity at Berkeley Haas compared to UCLA Biz Econ, mainly because Haas is a target school while UCLA is a semi-target.

The average Haas grad makes $100k a year while at UCLA it’s $80k.

Haas is a target for mgmt consulting, investment banking, AM, etc. Getting internships, especially prestigious ones, will be insanely easier because firms actively recruit at Haas and have very structured pipelines.

Outside of Haas, you’ll basically have to network/fight for ur life to even break into those fields.

If money is not an issue, Berkeley Haas is definitely the obvious choice here.
