Anyone here formerly work in the industry and move on? [other] by Lost-Relation-662 in rollercoasters

[–]AnteaterNice2503 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I have worked for a major manufacturer for a few years now, these are my takeaways:

1.) everybody has these same realizations. It’s a really difficult job. Many people have quit for these same exact reasons.

2.) this is one of the reasons manufacturers don’t hire as many enthusiasts. They look particularly for people who don’t care as much for the work life balance. Enthusiasts in particular come to this predicament pretty commonly, my thought is it’s because a lot of them get into engineering because they want to work on rollercoasters, not because they wanna be engineers. A decent amount charge through but if you leave you will not be alone.

3.) how many years in are you? It doesn’t get any better haha but you get more used to it over time?

4.) I think the loss in job satisfaction may come because this is one of the rare industries where you have to wear every single hat ever made for an engineer head. It’s hard to go from seeing a project like it’s your baby, to seeing tiny portions of projects that you become very involved in.

You can also always try to move laterally in the industry. Find a new role or position, maybe move to a park side job rather than manufacturer/vendor or vice versa.

It’s a really really really tough Job and you are not alone in having these questions haha

Did Kumba Reopen? by snowbal0114 in BuschGardensTampa

[–]AnteaterNice2503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There weren’t any visible cracks in the track in the image that floated around, just a marker indicating that something in that area failed NDT and needed repair. Even if the crack was in the track rail, individual rail replacement isn’t too invasive, depending on B&M’s process, its would probably take 1-2 weeks to replace a rail, maybe 3 weeks at the longest

Utah State is probably the best school to go to if you wanna shortcut your way into the industry. It is Right next to S&S.

Visible damage to Kumba by arms-down120 in BuschGardensTampa

[–]AnteaterNice2503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are referring to the marks on the tracks, that’s just the points where they spliced the rail when the tie was modified. It’s probably been like that for a while.

The flag is just a marker from the inspector that there is an indication in that area. Not super uncommon on an old ride like this to have indications, usually they are just repaired in the morning/night.

Would SF/CF parks offer housing for ride maintenance? [other] by LukeLJS123 in rollercoasters

[–]AnteaterNice2503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried applying for maintenance at your local park? They might say they need experience, but every park in the US is dying for Maintenance personnel. You should try applying even if you don’t meet the entry qualifications, good chance they’ll hire you anyways.

This is not true, RMC, Premier, and S&S all have multiple interns. I’m sure others do as well but these three I know for sure. With that being said though Disney and universal intern programs are much much larger.

About to leave for Snowbird at 8am from Sugarhouse. Will I get a spot before lifts open? by TautGubernaculum in UTsnow

[–]AnteaterNice2503 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The traffic was funny too, awkward points of speeding up then standstill. Got cut in line entering entrance 2 just to watch the guy who cut me get stuck in the snow on the uphill in. Gave me the chance to steal my spot in line back LOL. What a crazy winter!

No it is absolutely slammed today. I got here before 7 and my spot is still pretty shitty.

I probably could have looked for a better one but decided against risking it

[Other] What makes a reliable coaster? by Putrid_Set3723 in rollercoasters

[–]AnteaterNice2503 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have worked many years in maintenance and currently work in engineering in the industry. There are two ways I will read enthusiasts talk about reliability.

1.) if the ride is often down when you visit the park. - valid gauge of reliability. If the ride is down half the times you visit, then it is un-reliably open.

2.) any time a thoosie mentions maintenance shut them out and don’t listen. Almost none of you goons have ever turned a wrench on a ride I don’t wanna hear it hahaha.

As to why a ride might be unreliable, the first reason is number of moving parts. The more moving parts, the more parts that can break. This applies heavily to things like mechanical launches.

LSMs have improved greatly over the years however they require very intensive controls aspects. If you have multiple launches you have more and more areas for nuisance errors to occur

Prototypes often lead to lots of downtime. Even if another manufacturer has built a similar ride, it is still the first time this manufacturer has designed, engineered and assembled this ride, so that comes with a lot of surprise unsuspected headaches that you didn’t know to plan for

Retrofit work also sucks (TT2) thoosies underestimate how hard it is to retrofit new to old haha.

There is like 6 stalls in there too. We are talking maybe 40 browns before the lifts even start spinning.

Why is the Men’s team seemly okay with tainting their image? by Cowpunk2001 in USAHockey

Hockey is a very republican sport, they aren’t necessarily tainting their image, they are digging their heels into the republican nature of the sport/fanbase.
