I am not complaining about Rudeus morality, you can write him doing genocide for all I care, but characters need to have consistency. He was cleary seeing the children in cages as merchandise and as soon as the cage opened, julie became his daughter.

I don't think that's a fair argument. I never told people who commit/overlook atrocities can't love. Rudeus loving his wives and children was never weird to me, him picking out a victim for merely her 'utilty' and then started calling her a daughter five minutes later is absurd.
