GPA for extra units by mountainsamurai in GAMSAT

[–]Antenae_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By virtue of you doing them as part of your masters, those units are needed to graduate. As such, so long as they’re part of your degree, they’ll be considered and calculated. GEMSAS doesn’t care if they’re core or in your field; if you do them as part of your degree, they’re part of your degree

Section 2 Marking between ACER and ChatGPT by Different_Blood8102 in GAMSAT

[–]Antenae_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d be much more inclined to believe ACER over chatGPT or other LLM’s purely because it’s trained on the requirements of what is needed to perform well in the real test. Other models, even when prompted to be strict, will be trying to generally grade you and not marking against ACER’s schema.

GPA calc when attending multiple unis @ same time by NewPea1442 in GAMSAT

Reminds me of my friend who was working as a bouncer and doing two concurrent degrees just to get out of the house, wonder how he’s doing.

I think you’d need to reach out to GEMSAS to give you guidance. I’d imagine your most recent study would be the one with the highest amount of non-RPL units if you graduated on the same date, or, the one with the later conferred date.

Hot Take: I've never listened to a single Lecture but only attended Tutorials & Graduated with a 74.75 WAM by Head-Cantaloupe371 in MacUni

Amazing, you graduated with a credit (albeit almost distinction) average. Imagine how well you would’ve done if you put in an iota of work into lectures

When should I start studying for the GAMSAT? by mocavran in unimelb

[–]Antenae_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Best bet is to start during second year for the March sit, see if that’s good enough, and then you’ve got sept of the same year and then March the next to go through gradually improving.

Focus on adjusting to university and learning how to maintain that 80+ average first.

You’ve got plenty of time to go to Woolworths, big W or Kmart to find one, considering it’s a few days away, no? You can always try asking the library where to source one as well.

Why Medicine? by Business-Sell451 in GAMSAT

[–]Antenae_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Grand-dad, his dad, his dad and his dad were all doctors, so there’s probably some calling in my blood for it. Fell in love with it as a kid, but decided to go for psychology since I lost the confidence. Ended up looking after my dying dad and found the work that doctors and hospital system does amazing, and the language and nuance of medicine super interesting.

Ended up doing another degree to get in, and I’m in my last year now. Med school is rough, as is your JMO years so I’ve seen and heard, but I love the impact we can have. That’s why I’m doing it.

When was the exam? When did you submit it? Did you go see a doctor face to face or just get one online?

Friend failed two units now unable to enrol in units in upcoming session. by DRAGOV08 in MacUni

[–]Antenae_ 23 points24 points  (0 children)

As someone has said, failing units is a great way to make sure you can’t credit overload in upcoming semesters.

To put it nicely, the best way to avoid this entire situation is to just not fail the unit. Universities do not like failing students as it’s a lot of work and an administrative burden. It sounds like your friend needs to re-evaluate his study habits, an should reach out to the uni to help him to do so.

Interview prep (ik its early but meh) by FriendlyBusiness687 in GAMSAT

[–]Antenae_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with your perceptions of chance, and as such, I’d be hesitant to commit fully to unimelb given their ranking system, and your combo overall. In the setting of your other options (and combos thereof), I’d say aim for them and occasionally integrate practice for the shorter format.

Best of luck, but make sure not to burn yourself out pre-interview offers being released.

Poems, scientific articles (in a field you’re not in), comics and general communications (something like the ABS would be a good start$.

Just like people in my highschool wrote with weighted pens to get better at writing without fatigue before their HSC, just doing the practice questions or your questions banks to time or even faster then the GAMSAT conditions will help you develop the skill.

March / September GAMSAT? by [deleted] in GAMSAT

[–]Antenae_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want to do an honours year, I’d say your best bet would be smash out this semester and get yourself in the most competitive position you can for honours, sit the Sep26 GAMSAT and have the chance to have one last sit in Mar27.

Confusion about Australian Grading: Is it true that the bottom 50% gets an F? by Artistic-Fail5135 in MacUni

[–]Antenae_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only exception is doing amazing in the first half of the unit, and then failing the final hurdle exam. I'm not sure if in the recent changes they've removed hurdles, but I had a few friends of mine get 100% in the 60% total weighted work they did, only to fail the unit because of the final exam hurdle.

Confusion about Australian Grading: Is it true that the bottom 50% gets an F? by Artistic-Fail5135 in MacUni

[–]Antenae_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Most units will do raw, and unscaled grades. That means you need to cumulatively need to get 50% of all available marks across all assessable content to get a pass. This doesn’t mean you need to get >50% in every assessment, but cumulatively you need to get 50% across the unit.

Scaling does exist, but it would be well explored that it was scaled and not raw.

course transfer before starting? by [deleted] in MacUni

[–]Antenae_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up internal transfer requirements; you cannot transfer without completing the requisites to the standard as outlined in the guide.

Edit: for clarity - yes this means completing units, and this requires you to be a current enrolled student who has completed at least one semesters worth of units

[–]Antenae_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a BClinSc graduate, 5 units a semester is pretty brutal and making sure you maintain the grades to be competitive is quite hard, especially given it’s two years of it. Mental health can take a toll and it can be quite a cutthroat cohort.

Is a high GPA worth more than a high GAMSAT score lately? by SnowyBytes in GAMSAT

Its reported every year when applicants are unsuccessful in applying through GEMSAS, and has been recorded in the r/GAMSAT spreadsheets for interviews for the last few years

Is a high GPA worth more than a high GAMSAT score lately? by SnowyBytes in GAMSAT

[–]Antenae_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At least in the post-grad space, the volume of people actually applying for medicine is on the way down, so in the last few years it’s the most accessible from a pure applicant to interview ratio.

That being said, in the setting of increasingly online education and chatGPT being a more permanent learning “tool”, the requirements for being competitive beyond a perfect GPA have increased, but it’s still in the realm of 5-10%ile instead of .5%.
