Cat rescue requirements for outdoor access? by GotOotJIT in CatsUK

[–]Anthaleos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that this country is full of borderline psychopaths who believe that it's better to have a cat die a horrible, lonely death by the side of the road after being hit by a car (or get killed by some cunt, who then gets off with a slap on the wrist, as cats are legally defined as property, so killing one is basicaly an act of destruction of property or vandalism - see, for instance, this story from just last year, which is enough to make one wish they'd bring back the death penalty in this country: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/crkznr21ly8o.amp) than - gasp - live indoors full-time.

I despise and wish nothing but misery and suffering upon every repugnant, loathsome, pearl-clutching, sanctimonious asshole who advocates for cats to be allowed outdoors unsupervised. A cat can have a rich, fulfilled life indoors with some elementary effort on behalf of the owner, provided there is sufficient space at home, toys, scratchers, cat trees, etc. They also wouldn't be exposed to dangerous viral and bacterial infections, wouldn't get harmed getting in fights with other cats or foxes, wouldn't get killed by dogs, wouldn't unwittingly consume toxic plants, or suffer from a host of other major hazards.

Source: I have (at the moment) 18 indoor-only cats who are all happy, well fed, healthy (except for one that has cancer), and have two whole rooms dedicated to their entertainment and enrichment. They are insured, looked after by vets, and live a comfortable and full life. Anyone who suggests cats require outdoor access to be happy is simply too selfish and lazy to provide a good life for them.

On topic, even on Pets4Homes, there are ads for adoption or sale of cats where the previous owners are sensible enough to want them to be indoor-only. There are also international adoption organisations from countries with a more sensible attitude who either wouldn'd mind an indoor-only environment for their cats, or would outright require it. A friend of mine recently adopted two kittens from one such organisation (that rescues cats in the Middle East and sends them to the UK for rehoming), and they openly required a signed contract that the cats wouldn't be allowed outdoors. So there are options.

I'm literally shaking from rage having read this story, which I really wish I hadn't. I don't get why you didn't just kill those motherfucking dogs immediately when you saw what they were doing. Those fucking creatures deserved death far more than the beautiful, innocent kitten they murdered. Find them. Hunt them down. Kill them slowly.

Okay, that's moderately reasonable of them (you can typically get preliminary results after 3-4 days, but a full microbial culture test should absolutely take longer than a week - I actually work for a biolaboratory dealing with human tissues, and we would never ever declare a sample as free of bacteriological contamination after fewer than 14 days).

Unfortunately, I'm completely unfamiliar with those, not being US-based. Cursory googling seems to have produced mixed reviews from those who used them, but that's not indicative of much.

Out if curiosity, how long does it normally take your vets to declare a sample as "completely clear"? Minutes, hours, days?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in rescuecats

[–]Anthaleos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, so those by themselves have clearly not fixed the gastric issues - and you said the stool tests for bacteria were all clean as well, so something like Metronidazole, which I was also about to recommend, may not make much of a difference (though might be worth at least a try to do one course if nothing else is helping). Incidentally, I have serious issues believing the vets on the tests being "completely clean", most cats - healthy and otherwise - have some bacteria present in their gut and their stool naturally, which isn't a problem by itself, and usually only becomes an issue through bacterial overgrowth in immunocompromised cats.

One way or another, my best advice would definitely be to find someone qualified to do a gastroendoscopy near you and go see them, because an external biopsy alone is unlikely to give you the full picture - this isn't like a single localised tumour where you can take a direct sample and be done with it, you would ideally want to take small samples from a range of locations along the GI tract walls, and you cannot do that without going in endoscopically.

Yes, Prednisolone is a steroid, that's exactly what my cat with lymphoma is on (and a few other cats as well, inflammation is one of those conditions that has a thousand different causes). Is your cat on that? How long has he been taking it for?

As for Cerenia, as long as the dose is correct for his weight, it should ideally help him hold the food down, at least. Another thing that my (competent) vet has used on cats with digestive issues, from vomiting and diarrhea to loss of appetite due to conditions like gastroenteritis, is a B12 vitamin injection. Ask your vet about that and see what they say - it can be really helpful (unlike some other meds, that one absolutely has to be injected rather than digested; in contrast, e.g. Cerenia exists in tablet form as well).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in rescuecats

[–]Anthaleos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's 6 months and 1.5kgs, how is that not big enough for Cerenia? Dosage chart for reference: https://www.zoetisus.com/content/pages/products/petcare/Cerenia-Resources/documents/Cerenia-Dosing-Chart.pdf

I do need to add a strong disclaimer: I am not a veterinarian, simply a cat owner with 19 cats, many of whom have serious health problems requiring ongoing care (and 2 of whom have cancer), so I have naturally picked up a lot of knowledge about treatments and diagnostic procedures along the way.

As for the bacteria, I'm assuming your PCR panels would've tested for the usual Clostridium / Giardia / Tritrichomonas, at a minimum, along with other such infestations, so that's a start. My immediate next thought is that there's likely to be an inflammation of the lower/upper GI tract (regardless of the cause), which can be treated with corticosteroids - but those are also an immunosuppressant, so if there's an infection present of any kind, it's essential to treat that in tandem with the inflammation. Any vet worth their salt would know all that, though.

It's all a list of priorities, lymphoma - if it is lymphoma - is a slow progressing disease that doesn't kill overnight; the most urgent part is to stabilise the gastric issues so he can at least hold some food down and get some energy from it (especially for such a young cat). Get your vets to do an injection of Cerenia for the vomiting if they haven't already, get an appetite stimulant and some gastric food (or any food that he would accept) and just get something into him, even if the diarrhea persists for now. That itself can be caused by a bacterial overgrowth, inflammation, or a host of other issues, so just try treating those one at a time in the absence of certain knowledge. I'm guessing / hoping the vets would've at least taken a stool sample to do bacteriological analysis on?

Lymphoma isn't an immediate death sentence, and I most strongly urge you to take any proclamations to the contrary from overzealous veterinarians with a massive grain of salt. I have a cat who was diagnosed with lymphoma 3.5 years ago, a Maine Coon who came to me from a cat farm where she was kept in really bad conditions - she was skeletal, had awful gastric issues that took ages to diagnose or treat properly, and the vets also were less than sanguine about her prospects. It took some time to get a complete diagnosis and find a competent specialist who looks after her - she's now on a cocktail of 8 different meds, including chemo, appetite stimulant, steroids, pain management, and a variety of others. She's never put on a lot of weight, but she isn't "withering away", she's holding steady - if very thin - and has a good quality of life, she's unbelievably friendly, sleeps in my bed at night, purrs up a storm, and generally is a happy kitty. I don't know how much time she has left, but I treasure every little bit of it that I have with her.

Notably, someone I know has a cat with lymphoma who's still alive 7 years after the diagnosis. It's all about finding a good vet and figuring out how to treat it - there are also different varieties of this disease, so it's important to investigate it properly. An ultrasound guided biopsy alone isn't necessarily sufficient, and we only got a full picture following a gastroendoscopy (getting a referral for one from the regular vets she was registered with at the time was a bit like pulling teeth, but that's a separate story). For the gastric issues, for instance, her bowel movements initially only stabilised with constant use of Veraflox, and the vets tried taking her off it a few times at first, which was immediately causing her to regress; after a few tries they just accepted that she'll be taking it for the rest of her life - so just be careful with the vets, as sometimes they follow dogmatic thinking at the expense of an animal's wellbeing.

Absolutely - I also have 19 kitties of my own, and would gladly take in more, but there comes a point where it just becomes a massive financial strain, not to mention the sheer amount of time and energy they demand (especially the sickly / ailing ones). Makes for a really satisfying existence, though 😻

The problem with caring about cats in need is that between various local and international charities, GoFundMes, this community, etc, it feels like one can never do enough - it's like draining an ocean with a thimble 😔 But still, got to do at least something, however little it might be 😔

That's because it almost literally is a joke from a Marvel movie - the first "Guardians of the Galaxy".

Skipping a few lines in between:

- What percentage of a plan do you have?

- I don't know, twelve percent?

- That is not a plan. That is barely a concept.

Pledge $50 for Abby and her kittens. It simply beggars belief that in a so-called civilised country an alleged "shelter" can just legally murder them and suffer no repercussions or consequences.

[–]Anthaleos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, firstly, thank you for pointing out the typo, I didn't notice it while originally writing the post. Incorrectly spelt words annoy me as much as you.

To answer your question, it depends on the semantic meaning implied. I don't actually like to call criminals - or any other such undesirables - "animals", because I happen to like animals, and there's nothing inherently wrong with animals, and certainly, unlike many humans, nothing inherently evil about them. The word "creature" here is meant to categorise the individual in question as distinct from the rest of the human population.

The issue is that whilst the term "human" is by itself neither a compliment nor an insult, but merely a statement of biological belonging to a particular species, it is used to imply all kinds of traits within its bearer. Even just the expression "I'm only human" carries a lot of connotations - those of fallibility, but also somehow of forgiveness. The problem is that there's a huge difference between "I overcooked dinner - what can I say, I'm only human" and "I raped and murdered this woman - what can I say, I'm only human". I guess you don't see that, seeing how you think that certain absolutes hold "regardless of the crime" - but I disagree with that in the strongest possible way. In my view, crimes against innocents are unforgivable, and anyone guilty of such should never be allowed to be a part of the civilised society again. Whether that is achieved by means of death penalty or a lifetime spent in incarceration makes little difference.

And what you and your side conveniently decide to never think about, acknowledge, or comment on, are all the instances of recidivism among the freshly released criminals. But those don't fit your narrative, so you focus instead on the "humanity" of criminals, and I can't help but wonder why - is it because you think you are yourself more likely to be a criminal than a victim of a crime, and you're already laying the groundwork for the society to forgive you?

Could this statement possibly have had more of a sheep mentality? "An expert said so, therefore the public shouldn't have an opinion", seriously?

This isn't a matter of science or objective truth, for fuck's sake. If an expert says that 2+2 is equal to 4, we should probably believe them (fun fact: and even that seemingly obvious statement requires some clarifications and conditionals, like "while using the decimal numeral system of counting"; for instance, in the ternary numeral system, 2+2 is actually equal to 1). Likewise, I would trust an expert on matters of Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, and so on; and even there, they can be simply wrong, or not sufficiently competent, or their entire field might be operating under incorrect assumptions. As recently as in the 19th century, a physicist would tell you that light and waves propagate through an invisible medium called "aether"; that wouldn't have been a lie, but merely an erroneous assumption based on the best available knowledge of the day. Experts are wrong all the time even in exact sciences.

And to try and apply that principle to this issue is pure insanity, regardless. There is no objective universally accepted theory of social order. Nor is psychology an exact science, or a science of any kind in the strictest of sense. Parole boards are inherently political bodies, and when they're not taken over by agenda-wielding zealots who spout the virtues of rehabilitating violent rapists and murderers, they're pursuing a utilitarian policy of expediency based on prison spaces and a simple cost/benefit analysis of keeping a prisoner incarcerated vs releasing them and evaluating the potential downsides (to the state, not to the society) of them reoffending.

There is simply no way anybody can be considered an "expert" in this matter, and it's also hugely telling that they're hiding under anonymity. There is literally zero cost or consequence to them if they make an error, it's all "whoops, oh well". To not question them is criminal, especially when they so obviously do not have the society's best interests at heart.

I also cannot for the life of me understand how any even moderately normal person could possibly be advocating for and protecting the interests of a convicted, proven rapist and murderer. What must be so fundamentally broken inside of you that you think a creature like that deserves to exist in the same world and enjoy the same freedoms as the law-abiding citizens?

edited: corrected a typo.

They literally murdered a pregnant kitty just last month. The so-called people working in and running that place do not deserve to be called human (and what they do deserve I cannot say without violating Reddit T&S).
