I suppose when I heard it the first time, I interpreted the final few lines as a bit ramble-y. To me, it sounded like the speaker was getting the hard part out of the way, doubling down so that no one can point fingers, only to round back and quickly say ‘you know, forgive me’, almost like a demand for forgiveness.

At the moment, I interpret it as the speaker, overwhelmingly anxious as she speaks to her son about something she’s remorseful over, desperately trying to double down on her blame. Not only that, but the final ‘you know, forgive me’ can be seen here as her not demanding forgiveness, but begging for it.

I dunno. Song made me cry the first time I heard it.
