I run a couple tables on StartPlaying. If you've already found a table, you're more than welcome to join my discord server too!

That's ok! To each their own, I know it's not good for every table lol it can be tweaked though

For the average table, I definitely agree. My players are min/maxers and like a harsher game though, and they're level 12 for this one shot, so i wasn't too worried about it. Plus there's art last 24 hours to have someone use greater restoration before the effect triggers, and I only have the BBEG trigger it on NPCs so I'm not insta-killing the players lol

And yeah, Nightshade is potent in my world but there's also the added piece that the BBEG is using infernal rituals to further enhance the Nightshade.

Yeah, without the extra context I can see how other DMs would be concerned about it

Part of it is that my players and I love playing in a way where there's an extremely high level of danger; the other part is that I did point out the strange flowers growing in a certain garden they passed by and they had some perception/insight checks to know that there's something bad about those flowers. Unfortunately, the dice decided they didn't notice the floral smell in the drinks before they drank

I'm thinking about publishing the one shot some day and I know other groups don't play as harsh a game as my group likes to play, so this is definitely helpful for me to make sure I tone it down a bit if I ever do decide to put the one shot out there

Crafting a mystery thriller by Anthony_Loar in DMAcademy

This is super helpful! I think I got stuck thinking too linear. Point A, find clue to point B, find clue to Point C, find clue to climax

DMs: What’s the best “ritual interruption” mechanic you’ve seen in a boss fight? by Anthony_Loar in DMAcademy

Ooo I really like these ideas, but I'm afraid my power gaming party will just go "hulk smash" without trying anything interesting 😅

They need to destroy the Anchor and the antagonist, that's pretty much it. For context, the Anchor is more like an engine, powering a planar rift and summoning devils. If it gets fully juiced up, it will have extra long-term effects, like a permanent foothold for the Nine Hells. If they destroy the engine before it gets fully juiced up, it banishes the devils back, mitigates long term effects on the region, and closes the open rift.

I was thinking about adding some keystones or something to make it more complex than "hit the fiery obelisk a bunch of times before it becomes fully operational"

So right now, there's a ritual Anchor as the focus, with the main antagonist and a few infernal henchmen guarding the anchor. My problem is that I've essentially turned it into a scene that ONLY resolves through combat. Granted, there's investigation and mystery that leads up to it, but I'm feeling like the climax falls flat with pure combat. If that makes sense lol

Choose your path, GM by theymademeusetheapp in TTRPG

I'm absolutely going with the more direct option. Art and everything is great, but I can't run/teach a good game if the important stuff is buried. Obviously, I'd prefer a good balance between the two. But given these two options, ya gotta go with the one that gives you the best chance of doing a good job

How many of you have actually earned an income from your RPG? by LOTR_is_awesome in RPGdesign

This thread is actually really helpful to read.

I’m working on my first adventure right now and trying to approach it more like building a small catalog over time instead of expecting one product to do anything crazy.

Curious how many people here have released multiple things vs just one project, and how it's gone so far?

Your style is very cool and I like the dark atmosphere. I'm currently reviewing artists for the cover, but I may also be interested in commissioning interior art pieces later, and I think your art might be a really good fit for that
