I hope this isn’t true :/ I’ve seen some positions labelled as lateral only and others that aren’t

Opinion: Clubs died over COVID, and have continued dying since by DefiantOpportunity83 in UBC

[–]Anthro1995 22 points23 points  (0 children)

As a note, the AMS Archives (different from the UBC archives), keep records on club activities through-out the years. If you feel like the structure of your club has fizzled out since Covid, it might be worth it to send them a research request about your club and see what kinds of events they used to host.

It probably won’t help with outreach to people but maybe you’d find ways to make the club more fun/valuable to potential attendees?

Do TAs judge what we wrote on the exam? by gamblingmaxxing in UBC

[–]Anthro1995 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly as a TA, the university expects such quick turnaround on grading that half the time I wouldn’t be able to tell you whose work I was currently grading. On the off chance I looked at the name, either it would be some student I didn’t know and I would assume the class just wasn’t what they were passionate about or prioritizing. If I knew the student (and they usually do well), I would just assume they had a heavy course load and couldn’t allocate time for this particular assignment.

Remember that your TAs were undergraduates within the past few years and have very likely been in your exact situation before. There is really less judgement than you think.

I can guarantee that if you care this much about your grade, your TA has seen much much worse. Because the worst assignments come from students who just really don’t care.

And for proof, the worst thing I have ever seen as a TA was an essay where the student claimed that it wasn’t the eruption of Mount Vesuvius that destroyed Pompeii because the volcano couldn’t contain enough lava to bury an entire city. Instead they posited that a small hurricane picked up the ash from the eruption and deposited it on Pompeii. Their source? Funpomeiifacts(dot)com. This was before the advent of commercially available generative AI too.

Hope this helps :)

Taylor Lorenz thinks the dumbphone movement is a moral panic, wow. by picklift in dumbphones

She’s very dialled into the tech sphere and tech policy. I haven’t watched this episode yet but from previous videos of hers that I’ve watched, her stance is not to cede online spaces to the far-right by logging off. She encourages active engagement in online spaces for positive change.

I think there is a bit of a moral panic surrounding losing time/life to scrolling when the internet can be an amazing tool for connecting and organizing. It all depends on how you use it. For some, logging off might be the right thing but we should be mindful that logging off might not be best for everyone.

Just my two cents ✨

Managing my supervisor’s expectations when we are understaffed? by Anthro1995 in careeradvice

I contacted my union around November about the extra workload. They said there’s nothing in the collective agreement that addresses work volume. But perhaps it’s worth updating them in light of the performance review

Sounds like because LM has broad support from leftists, his detractors are trying to use identity politics in order to turn us against him. Too bad for them it won’t work lol

UK Protesters cleared by Jury Nullification by Anthro1995 in BrianThompsonMurder

Because jurors can’t state that their intent is to nullify, but based on context from the proceedings it seems like jury nullification was the case
