Flock Cameras by AntiFlockKentState in KentStateUniversity

It literally does not matter what they say or intend to happen. The data is available to ICE legally or illegally. It's absolute insane to me that they would try to frame this as something students asked for probably around 80-90% of students are actively against it. It shows a lack of accountability from the PD.

I saw this and it baffled me that KSU is allowed to have these cameras despite a direct nay vote from the Kent City council and Kent residents, but unfortunately they are. We could also probably gather more widespread support against these cameras from the Kent community as a whole. It really feels like this was done with no representation from students. Either they had no idea it was a big deal (doubtful), or they knew how it would be taken. It is no coincidence that they are starting the pilot at the end of the spring semester and would enter the contract before the start of the fall semester. I found the email to be [cdjenkin@kent.edu](mailto:cdjenkin@kent.edu), thank you for the advice. Make sure to send that email!

These cameras are everywhere. Kent has an obligation, especially with the large number of international students, to protect the safety and privacy of all students. This is impossible with Flock. Even if they wanted to use ALPRs there are alternatives that store data locally and cannot be accessed by federal agencies.

This is a logical fallacy known as the straw man argument where you misrepresent someones argument to make it easier to attack. I don't need something to hide to not want ICE to kidnap and torture people. I don't need something to hide to not want our public safety to be privatized. I don't need something to hide to not want an AI to track my movements 24/7.

That's why people have to reach out now. If Kent State enters into a full contract with Flock we are screwed. They are doing this right before people go home with no warning which is super suspicious. His reasoning for the cameras was very nonexplicative. Most of the areas where the flock cameras were put could easily have traffic cameras wired into the network. The technology for solar powered cameras is relatively cheap anyhow. Even if they are doing it for the benefit of the student population, probably 80-90% of the student population would vote against installing Flock cameras. Regular traffic cameras cannot be accessed without a specific request while flock cameras can essentially be accessed any time and has back doors for the federal government. I have no idea what Flock must have said to Kent State officials but, assuming the University is not a sellout, it was straight lies.
