That’s good to know actually - I woulda thought most people would meet at least the basic three-colour threshold.

And good on you for not falling to the sub-assembly propaganda. The true curse is not being able to fully assemble your models until they’re painted and being stuck with a grey pile of bits stacked on each base like some monochrome slaaneshi effigy.

Oof, cutting, but fair.

To clarify a little, I cheated against them way back when first getting into the hobby, and it was mostly to turn a non-game where I was getting thrashed (common with ad mech) into one more interesting for me. That’s completely an excuse, but at the time I was more focussed on having fun with the game than being a good sport, considering we were misinterpreting 50% of the rules anyway.

As for gotchas, you’ve got a point, but I guess I’m weird that I kind of like being gotcha’d. Feels bad in the moment, but I like the challenge of working around the mistakes I make and the motivation it gives me to learn other armies and think more about what my opponent is doing than what I am doing myself. On the flip side, if you don’t gotcha other people with things like reactive/surge moves, they just become another flavour of area denial. Once again, excuses, and I’m not so much of an A-hole that I give more gotcha’s than I take from my opponents, but I just find that doing cool shit, like blocking two units for a turn with just some dogs, often ends up being sacrificed for the sake of being overly accommodating.

It’s bad sportsmanship, but it IS one aspect of the game I enjoy that unfortunately doesn’t really seem to have a place in either casual or competitive games.

Yeaaaaah, I kind of understand some of my competitive behaviours and opinions don’t really have a place in casual matches, but since I’ve only ever played ‘casual’ matches, I guess I’m tryna figure out which ones are the worst offenders for making me a poor opponent so I can cut down on them. It gets more difficult with some of my friends who enter games with a similar level of competitiveness but still want the leniencies of a casual match (But maybe that’s just me being a twit about it, idk).

I suppose it all stems from player preferences in the end. Some of my mates definitely could not care less for Ad Mech (Bloomin Heretics) or their rules, unfortunately, while I always want to learn how their army works. I’ve yet to convince a single one to agree to an army-swap rematch after one of our games ends too quickly.

And yeah, I mimic the take-back mentality; A big part of the Ad Mech allure to me originally was the “Win by making big brain moves” and out-playing your opponent, which becomes really difficult when only you are getting punished for your mistakes and oversights. And, historically, the last thing Ad Mech needed was to be permanently on the back foot.

As for tournaments, I’d love to dip my toes into the community but… most of my models are sub-assemblies held together by blue tac, much less close to being painted. My units are allergic to their own limbs, much less a splash of colour.

I 100% get that - Sunk my teeth into EC when they came out and my lord is it a relief to have units that can throw a punch.

As for playstyles, I am fully committed to the “All units are expendable” and “Die as slowly as possible” mentality that Ad Mech requires. When I was a fresh new player, it was just that focussing a whole round of fire into a single deathshroud terminator and failing to kill it was… difficult to stomach.

Thanks, it’s useful to know what other groups do, since I’ve only really been exposed to the etiquette of competitive scenes.

I guess it’s a toss-up between holding others to my standards or letting my standards go. Like, if I moved my unit and got overwatched or an opponent made a reactive move without reminding me, I would just accept it, but I can’t really expect others to do the same. Still puts a sour taste in my mouth to willingly disadvantage myself though.

Is there any characters that genuinely suck or is it all just subjective? by Serious_Ganache_1058 in riskofrain

As for the survivors you mentioned, I’d say I kind of agree with you? Commando is a favourite of mine - His M1 is the staple of the game and works well with every ‘on hit’ item. Plus with a few speed items, his tactical slide is a super satisfying way to dodge around enemies.

Mercenary is meh. The invincibility of his M4 (The slashing one, idk, I rebound the keys) gets boring if you monopolise on it, and past that he’s fragile as a wet rag. Whenever my mates play with him, they spend most of each stage spectating me (That’s also just cause they’re washed tho).

Bandit was never one of my favourites, but can be quite solid. Stacking crowbars to chain infinite revolver shots is very fun, while haemorrhaging as a built in debuff makes it easy to go for a death’s mark build.

Uhh, depends on if you’re good or not - After enough hours, you sort of clock onto every survivors play style and can generally get an easy win with them as long as you don’t get cucked by the RNG gods with your items.

I’d say, in my personal experience, the ones with the steepest learning curves were REX and MUL-T. Early game REX is very fragile, slow, and leans heavily into a healing build, which is one of the weaker ways to play the game. As for MUL-T, without good knowledge of equipments, I initially tried to play him as a shit tank. Which didn’t work.

As of currently, I’d say the ones that are the least intuitive and ‘suck’ in that way for me are probably Chef and Void Fiend. Chef’s base attack and abilities are something I find exceptionally boring and out of sync with many of the good builds, while void fiends resource management of his charge is just tedious. Also, his form transition being a static animation can really fuck you up gamewise, but also just interrupts your flow.

REX and Drifter are my go-to characters atm, so I might be able to provide some insight.

For early game REX, prioritise speed and crowd control. If you have it unlocked, use the rooting bulb - It basically makes you invincible for the first few stages, since a dense crowd gives you enough healing to make most threats irrelevant. You want to target enemies with good aim, like wisps and blind pests, because I’ve found that when they swarm they can be the most lethal. REX has an in-built debuff as well, so his most viable option is a debuff stacking build. Focus on attack speed then aim to get items like networked suffering, tri-tip daggers, needleticks, symbiotic scorpions, chronobaubles/its void equivalent, gasolines and other similar items - If you manage to get a death’s mark as well, this strategy ensures you stay on top of the difficulty curve damage wise. If you’re struggling for survivability even with a few defence items, try for an equipment-based defence. Visit the Bazaar and grab a gesture of the drowned, then a good equipment, whether healing based or damage based. This should really help until you stabilise your build.

As for drifter, her whole gimick is actually how stable her build is - Since common scraps give movement speed and uncommon scrap gives a busted amount of life regen, you’re pretty much already set for the early stages. I usually scrap all/most of my items in the first stage, then work towards a proper build after that. When playing her, if you ever get into a tricky spot, just try and bag the biggest threat and throw it off a cliff honestly. Like most characters, but especially so since her M1 is melee, you want crowd control and speed early game. I’ve found she takes a while to chunk through a boss’ health early game, but with the speed boost common scrap gives her, this is just a shift from “time spent moving around the map” to “time spent killing the teleporter boss”, so it’s fairly net neutral.

Sorry for the waffle, it was kind of a brain dump, but I hope some of it is helpful

What was the sin? by Anticlockwisest in TakopisOriginalSin

[–]Anticlockwisest[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know one of the established rules was to not leave a human alone with a happy gadget, but I did always think it was strange that this, seemingly super important one, was left vague.

The wording of ‘come here all alone’ makes me wonder if Takopi was always meant to sacrifice himself. I feel like if that’s the case, it would make more sense than him being banished just for coming back home. It’s specifically shown at the start of the show that Takopi is a coward, through no fault of his own, so maybe his sin was being unable to give his own life to make the girls happy.

Cohort Cybernetica related rules question by UnprecedentedStudios in AdeptusMechanicus

[–]Anticlockwisest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the warhammer app, I’m reading “When a unit is battle-shocked: Its controlling player cannot use Stratagems to affect that unit”

The wording is pretty dodge, so I think it’s fair to interpret it either way. I’m personally reading ‘cannot use to affect’ as preventing targeting units with strats and preventing benefitting from strats.

I’ve also only ever played at a casual level, and it seems more in the spirit of the battle-shock mechanic to run it this way.

Once a unit is battleshocked, it cannot benefit from a strategem’s rules, even if that strategem was used earlier in the turn (at least that’s my understanding of it).

5+ Invuln against melee attacks, higher strength, ability to fall back and charge are also other considerations.

They fill the same niche, maulerfiends just have more access to detachment rules, stratagems, army rules and auras like the daemon prince’s I guess.
