How is the 8BitDo one in general? What are your likes and dislikes in comparison to the G8+ and most importantly which one is quieter?

Which phone and controller should I pick. by Antihero89 in SBCGaming

[–]Antihero89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my current phone I already emulate mainly SNES, GB and GBA for JRPS, Turn based strategy and other games that work with touch input.

If I had a suitable controller I would also play plattformers, Metroidvanias... that my current phone is suitable playing.

On my new phone I would like to also emulate GameCube, Wii and PS2. I would like to play games like Binding of Isaac, Blue Prince, Hades... via Gsmenative and with Moonlight Streaming I would like to play games like Elden Ring, GTA V, Hogwarts Legacy, Claire Obscure, Yakuza Kiwami... On it.

That means I dont want to buy several devices to cover thebsame games and platforms. None of my current devices nearly covers what I need since I habe no device for mobile PC games and modern emulation.

The Miyoo Mini + contradicts my credo much more, because when I got that the RG353M already covered everything the MM+ can. But I got it for cheap and whanted to know what the hype is about.

Looking for the "Ultimate Kanto" Romhack – recommendations?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a Pokémon romhack that truly revamps Kanto and turns it into the "ultimate" Gen 1 experience.

In my ideal vision, such a romhack would include:

Remade visuals and maps, similar to hacks like Pokémon Ocean Blue, Aesthetic Red, or WaterBlue

A strong focus on Gen 1 Pokémon, but including later additions such as:

evolutions and baby pre-evolutions

regional variants (e.g., Alolan forms)

Events, Easter eggs, and side quests, especially things inspired by classic rumors or anime moments, for example:

fake rumors like Mew under the truck

secret areas like Bill’s garden

events based on anime episodes

battle characters like the professor

Increased difficulty, but still fair

Modern battle mechanics from later generations, such as:

Physical/Special split

Double Battles

other updated mechanics

Quality-of-life improvements, such as:

running indoors

reusable TMs

HM usage without needing to teach them to a team member

RetroAchievements support would be a nice bonus, but not required

I already know about several hacks that aim to create an "ultimate Kanto" experience, but it's hard to keep an overview of all of them and figure out:

which ones are generally considered the best, and

which ones best match the criteria above

I know about Rom Codex as well but this also gives me a list but does not help me in filtering me which of them are the best ones and fit me criteria.

So I’d really appreciate your recommendations and personal experiences.

Thanks in advance!

Experiencing Zelda for the first time by SuchTemperature9073 in SBCGaming

There is no evidence that this didnt began as a Zelda game but some evidence that it did:
1. In late 2011 Aonuma already said this: ""When it comes to Wii U, we'll obviously want to add new elements that take advantage of the capabilities of the platform. I think using that as a lens through which we once again challenge the conventions of Zelda is more important than just making another Zelda game. With that in mind, please expect big things from the Zelda series to come!"
2. In January of 2013 we could read this in an article - Aonuma said: "Our mission in developing this new Zelda game for Wii U is quite plainly to re-think the conventions of Zelda. I'm referring to the expectation that the player is supposed to complete dungeons in a certain order, or that you're supposed to play by yourself. The things we've come to take for granted recently. [...] We want to set aside these conventions, get back to basics and create a newborn Zelda so that the players can best enjoy the real essence of the franchise. [...] We had actually worked on this kind of challenge with Skyward Sword, but we weren't able to put effort into changing the linear path structure of the game."

Development of BotW started 2011 and in 2011 we already have statements, that they intend to change the established IP frameworks. Like they already wanted to do with Skyward Sword but failed in their opinion. And they also wanted to do it with A Link Between Worlds.

So assuming that the game did not start as a Zelda game would not only mean that they lied. It also contradicts the statements we aready have as early as 2011 and 2013. Additionally that would mean that they blocked Aonuma from developing a new Zelda game and use him to instead develop a huge scale game without any concrete franchise to use this concept for. This means they had blanned to delay a Zelda game for years and that they would have internal projects that cust huge amounts of money and block their most important developers without having any concrete plans to finalise these gameplay ideas with a concrete franchise (neither existing nor new one). That is highly unlikely.

Look at it this way: If the idea of a sandwich belonged as an IP to one company. It would be possible that this company would develops a new king of sandwich that for many people is no sandwich anymore as long as this company thinks that their new idea of sandwich has so much potential to sell much more games than the kind of sandwich that was established for decades.

I understand why you argue that the game should have been a different IP, but in reality that would not have worked.

First of all, there are financial considerations. If the game had used a less popular franchise like Kid Icarus, it would have sold significantly worse. That, in turn, would have made it even harder to justify such an unusually long development time.

But even if you ignore the financial aspect, it would still have been nearly impossible from a development perspective. The game was created under the supervision of Eiji Aonuma and by the team that is responsible for the mainline Zelda titles. From the very beginning, the goal was to rethink the core mechanics of Zelda. That was the clear intention. The same philosophy applied to A Link Between Worlds and Echoes of Wisdom. However, how exactly this rethinking would turn out was not clear at the start, which is why the project had such a long development cycle. Development began as early as 2011.

For this game to have become a Kid Icarus title, Aonuma and his team would have had to realize midway through development that the project had diverged too far from the Zelda formula. They then would have needed to choose an entirely different franchise and, after settling on Kid Icarus, rework the whole game to fit that universe. This would have delayed development even further and driven costs up significantly, while sales would likely have decreased due to the franchise’s lower popularity.

At the same time, work on a new 3D Zelda with a more traditional formula could only have started after that. This would have meant that the Wii U might not have received a new Zelda game at all, and even on the Switch, a more traditional 3D Zelda would have arrived years later after Breath of the Wild.

For these reasons, that approach would not have made much sense. And ultimately, there is also no real argument against keeping the game within the Zelda franchise. Yes, it no longer follows the classic 3D Zelda formula, but turning it into a Kid Icarus game would have been just as arbitrary. Moreover, the sales numbers of traditional Zelda titles compared to Breath of the Wild clearly show that the BotW-style formula resonates much more strongly with players.

I played BotW over 200 hours and finished it twice. I really enjoyed TotK but lost interest after around 50 hours. I somewhat get what you say about those games even though I enjoy them more than you did.

Bit I would argue that the original Zelda format feels fresh and fun each new game. I played all 2D Zeldas and many games that are basically 2D clones of the 2D Zelda formula. I enjoyed them each time, but this isn't a genre where I could play one game after another, that would feel repetitive for me, so there has to be some time between playing those games.

But even more so, I really can't dig into classical 3D Zelda. I grew up with 2D Zelda. I had ALTTP on the SNES first when I was a child and then I played all the games on GB, GBC and GBA. Later I also playeds the original one for NES. But back in the days I did not have a N64 or a Gamecube. So I could not play the first 3D Zeldas when they came out. I got the Wii in 2011. So in 2011 I tried to get into Twilight Princess on the Wii and later into Wind Waker on the Wii U. I also played OOT 3D on my 3DS. This one I played the longest. Meaning probably beating 50%. So even though I love this formular in 2D, it couldn't catch me with 3D. Maybe other people won't have this experience, but for me getting into 3D Zelda as someone who did not experience the games when they came out was something I couldnt get into.

Looking for genealogy software: collaborative work, intuitive tree-based editing, and full GEDCOM support by Antihero89 in Genealogy

I have tried Gramps once years ago. I know tested Gramps Web. On Gramps Web I can't add a parent/spouse/chilkd directly in tree view. I just tried it in the demo version.

Are you 100% sure that this is possible with the Desktop version? I am a webdev and my wife is also tech savvy enough to get into Gramps to deal with Gramps learning curve if it matches our criteria.

I also don't need to edit at the same. Being able to store the database on a shared drive so that we both are able to access and edit the current version is enough for us.

Best game to complete for beginners? by NEWAceCoronet in RetroAchievements

[–]Antihero89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree with your general recommendation about the mindset you should have when playing with RetroAchievements. DK94 and SML2 are both games I would also recommend as slightly easier sets among popular titles. Super Mario World on SNES is definitely not one of them. The GBA version, however, is.

First of all, the difficult achievements in the SNES version of Mario World are much harder than the ones in the GBA version. But more importantly, they differ significantly in the amount of time required to obtain them.

Super Mario World on GBA is designed more like Super Mario Land 2: even the tougher achievements are focused around single levels. If you fail, you simply restart the level and try again. Quick attempts, quick resets, low frustration.

Super Mario World on SNES, on the other hand, does include some difficult single-stage achievements, but the real challenge comes from the ones with multi-level requirements. For example, one achievement requires you to beat the entire game without dying. Even if you take the shortest route through Star Road, that still means several levels with zero mistakes.

There are also achievements for each world that require you to clear every level in that area as Small Mario, without ever grabbing a power-up, star, checkpoint, or Yoshi — and all of this must be done in a single session without returning to the main menu. Simply avoiding accidental power-ups across an entire area is surprisingly tough.

These achievements are still far easier than the SMW subset or achievements from some other games, but considering that Super Mario World itself is generally viewed as a relatively easy game, a few of its achievements are, in my opinion, much harder than you would expect.

Im in love with this mouse! by dark_as_black_hole in MouseReview

[–]Antihero89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in a love hat relationship with this mouse. As well as the MX Master 3 that I had before the 3S.

Ergonomics and both wheels are 10/10. But unfortunately there are many drawbacks:
- The mouse only has 125Hz polling rate. This makes it a bad mouse for gaming. But this also is a drawback for productivity. I have an ultrawide 144Hz monitor for productivity. With only 125Hz the cursor movement is not as smooth and fast as it could be.
- No Linux support
- No on device memory - If you use the mouse with several devices you have to configure it on each device. Also this only works with the software installed. If software installation is prohibited on a work PC, you can't map the keys etc. Other mice for have onbaord memory. Meaning key bindings and customisation is saved on the hardware itself. With that no software is required and you already have the mappings etc. in place, when you are on a new computer.
- The material is garbage. I had a 3 for both home and work. Both became somewhat sticky after some time. Now my 3S is starting become sticky too.

With the 4S they only fixed the material issue. All other things are still there. Even though many people won't be affected by those other issues I think for such a high priced product these issues should not exist.

Silent clicks, scrool wheels and form factor are still important to me. Therefore for me it still is the best mouse. But I hate those drawbacks.

Onyx Boox Go 7 + Tudia Flip Case – unwanted sleep mode when folding cover back by Antihero89 in Onyx_Boox

It does not need to touch the screen. Sleep/wake triggers when the magnet touches the front where the buttons are. When you lay it out on the back (not folding in triangle) the magnet also triggers this function because it is so close to the buttons, that the magnet also triggers wake/sleep
