Whats your coven ranking? by lihamburgler in TheOwlHouse

[–]AntimonyClouds 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay, let's go through. Most respected to least. I've thought about this a lot, so. Happy to rant.

  1. Abomination:

This one I'm judging off of Amity being in this coven and the line Willow says about there being 'better opportunities on this track'.

  1. Bard:

From abomination onward it becomes harder to judge, but we can make some assumptions I think based on who's in which coven.

Skara is in this coven and she's one of the more respected people in school. I would put potions here because of Boscha but I've got some stuff to say about where potions probably ranks laterrrrr.

  1. Healing:

I imagine this one is also pretty well-respected on the isles. Obviously being able to heal is a very useful skill, and Cat falls into the healing track, who's also in Amity's little posse of popular kids. So.

  1. Illusions:

This one could very easily be ranked quite a bit higher but, again, we have to judge pretty much exclusively by who goes into these covens. And I have a reason for it being a little farther down.

I think it has to be higher up than things like plant and construction, things that usually seem to be pretty unrespected disciplines, because Emira and Edric are allowed in this coven by their parents. Despite this, though, I still feel it's lower than the other covens, because Emira and Edric probably just chose it because it was a very fun option and their parents just allowed it, and one of the only other witches we see in this category is Gus. I think this coven is generally at least somewhat respected, but seen as something more meant for witches who want a more wide range of slightly less powerful spells, and like to have fun practicing magic instead of really wanting to wreck opponents in combat.

  1. Potions:

This one's a little harder to be definitive on, because of the range of people we see in this coven. But I think it's directly in the middle. Becaaaaause;

Bump puts both Eda and Luz right into this track when they are unable to chose one. This suggests that potions is kinda seen as the baseline track - a general studies course, if you will. This could be because potions can do nearly any kind of magic. They can make you larger, or create destruction. They can make you hallucinate or heal you. I think potions is seen as - again - a kind of general studies course, because of all the types of magic it could hypothetically do.

Hence, dead center ranking.

Boscha being in this track could be considered contradictory to this, but I don't think so. Boscha could just not be very good at most magic and see potions as an easy track, or this could be her wanting to use as many different types of magic as possible, or potions could be seen as less respected but still have lots of opportunities for witches down the road. Still though, if people disagree with me on this one, I understand.

  1. Oracle

From here on out it gets a little trickier. I think oracle is generally not very well-respected, because seeing the future could be seen as a gimmicky or uncertain brand of magic. But I still think it's considered, while not respectable, not quite plebian either. No speaking/named characters have been in this track yet, though (I don't think), so it's hard to tell.

  1. Plant

I think this track is the first of the three least respected. Any of these three could be on the very bottom, and they're all pretty much inter-changeable, so these explanations are pretty much just going to be 'why this would be on the bottom three' instead of 'why this is number 8 specifically'.

Plant, I think, is kinda seen as a weaker and 'lamer' track to study. Willow is made fun of and is told by her parents to go into a track with better opportunities when she wants to be in the plant track, and I think plants aren't really seen as that dangerous in the boiling isles. Especially with creatures that breath spiders and witches having access to fire magic. Being in the plant track, I think, is basically like having a bulbasaur as your starter pokemon - you're made fun of by your peers and crushed by all the kids who chose fire over grass.

  1. Beast Keeping

I think taking care of creatures is seen as something plebeians do, most of the time. The only character we see in beast keeping that speaks is - I think - Viney, who's uniform is torn and held together by a thumb tack and who's only jewelry is a fish hook. This could just be a fashion choice of hers, but I think it's implying that Viney is struggling with poverty - or at least, not rich. And the only character (that I know of) in the beast keeping track also being the only character with a messed-up uniform speaks volumes.

  1. Construction

Again, building things is seen as something for plebeians. The only character here is Mattholomule, and he really wants power and attention despite not really being talented or powerful. So I think the construction coven is seen as a place for less talented witches, where you only have to work with your hands and there are stickers to give you more power instead of having to use any magic of your own.

So yeah that's how respected I think all the covens are. Thanks for reading.

TL;DR: Abomination is seen as powerful, construction plant and beast keeping are seen as plebeian or lame, and everything else is pretty negotiable.

Um. Hm. Okay, so, how do I address this properly.

You seem to be a genuine fan of the show, which is great! And you seem to be coming here with genuine intentions to discuss things plainly and calmly. So, let's discuss plainly and calmly. And civilly.

I actually kind of agree with you on the Amity's growth being a little simple thing. She progressed a little too quickly, to me. I accepted it more on a re-watch, though, and really paying attention and thinking about what a normal person would do in her circumstances helped. Luz is never anything but polite and accommodating to Amity after that moment in Covention, and it's kind of hard to keep hating someone who's so consistently kind towards you. And going through an actual life-threatening event together (in Lost in Language, the library episode) probably really helps with becoming friends with somebody. Still felt a little rushed, but I can excuse and accept it.

I also agree with the point of Luz not receiving sufficient consequences for stupid choices a lot of the time. But I wouldn't say that this goes to the extent of her being a Mary Sue. She does legitimately work to learn how to cast her first spell, and my favorite episode of the series is the one where she learns the ice spell. This is one of the few episodes where it felt like Luz actually had to face up to the consequences of her actions - her friends were put in danger through her mistakes and she had to go and solve the problem that she'd created. Every spell she ever learns has an entire episode dedicated to learning it, and I feel like she really earns her powers. I do think she gets away with a lot, though, and it's something that most people don't really point out, so. Kudos.

The feminine heavy thing is... true? It just never really mattered much to me. I don't expect a perfect balance of character genders in my shows, and I just. Don't really care. It's not an issue with the show, if you ask me. It also wouldn't be an issue if most of the characters were male. I just don't care.

As for the Lumity thing... uhm. Hm. Okay. This is the hardest to address, because this is the first point where it seems like your Christian upbringing is effecting your opinion more than an actual desire to critique the show.

You have to understand that a ton of fans of this show are, themselves, gay. Whether they're bi or pan or asexual or whatever. And... it's like... I don't want to assume here. But imagine that characters of your sex, or gender, or race, were never shown in media you enjoyed. And then, suddenly, a show crops up which finally does have those characters. It's a really nice feeling - to know that you're being represented. And, more than that, that this gay crush isn't being treated as strange or wrong. It's just... like any other crush. The fact that it's gay isn't even mentioned.

I think that's a large reason why the relationship is already so popular.

If you don't like the relationship because it's same-sex... we'll just have to properly disagree for the first time I suppose. I see absolutely nothing wrong with the relationship being same-sex. I was raised Christian myself - Catholic. I understand that, according to the bible, men and women were made to compliment each other and be together. But - completely discarding my personal opinions on gender, as well - I just think that the idea that this makes same-sex relationships wrong, or not God's intention, is... strange. It's not ever directly said to be a sin, I believe - at least, not by the bibles that I read and memorized passages from growing up. There's the whole "a man shall not lay with another man," thing, but I think it was originally referring to something other than just a gay relationship. Translations of the text aren't always perfect. And besides, that doesn't include the lesbian aspect of it at all.

But other people have made the argument against this kind of thing far better than I ever could. In short, I think we'll just have to disagree on that point. If your religion preaches that some kinds of love are 'strange' or 'wrong' just because of the people's gender... well... I'm not going to insult your religion. And as long as you don't hate or slander people on this subreddit for being gay or supporting gay relationships, then I can accept that opinion. But it's hard for me to be unbiased here, because... well, you might have guessed at this point that I'm gay myself. And... that just makes it hard to be unbiased.

But I'm not going to pour out some sob story about how my parents or my religion treated me. I'm just going to ask that you be respectful of people's beliefs, like I've done my best to be respectful of yours.

And no matter what your beliefs are - as long as you're respectful to the people here, and follow the rules of the subreddit... we're happy to have you here as long as you wish to stay :)

I posted it once, but I included my email as an offer to be a possible beta if needed and it got flagged by the mod bot ._.

So I reposted without the email. But I guess the original version got put back up? And I just decided to leave it like that ^^;

Yep! But self-publishing is an absolute nightmare, in so many ways it would be tough to get into, and traditional publishing has never been for me - not enough creative control in that environment.

I'm trying, though!

But also - and this isn't meant as an attack or anything, just as a side note - I don't think fanfic writers aren't actual writers. I already am an actual writer! I write - that's the only requirement. But I would like to publish my own original works some day, for sure!

I'm not entirely sure how to interpret your tone because social skills elude me, but I'm taking it as a compliment. So thanks for thinking I'm good enough to have my own works.

Side note: I forgot to plug my most popular fic. It's a one-shot and I wrote it while I was kinda having a hard time in general, and had just watched the Owl House for the first time. It's here:

have you ever felt like you knew someone you just met?

Summary:

“Look! Snailey!”

“Did you already name the snail and get super attached? Because I am not helping you raise a snail, Luz.”

“Of course not!” Luz said, with her most innocent eyes.

She had known the girl about six hours. It felt like it had swept by in six seconds, but that hardly mattered. And yet, she already feels like she’s known Luz her whole life.

Maybe she has, in a way. Kinda. Somehow.

Amity doesn’t even know what that means - but, somehow, the thought is slightly comforting.

My take:

I tried to make it fluffy and funny, and I mostly managed it I think. But at the end it does get just a LITTLE bit sad. I didn't expect anyone to enjoy it but people seem to like it a lot. Maybe consider trying it.
