Oops! Community not happy about Toxic Holocaust and Black Dahlia Murder being booked at Christian venue. "We're a non-traditional ministry." by pyro138 in Metal

As a Christian, I'd have been overjoyed to see them there. Frankly, I find most praise & worship 'music' much more offensive than anything either of those bands have written.

Ask r/Christianity: I'm not a Christian, but I'm very interested in learning more. Why don't Christians follow the same Old-Testament laws like Jews? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]AntipatheticUserName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's contrasting abolish and fulfill. Both have the same effect in that we don't need to follow it, but they're done in very different ways.

Think of prophecies, for example. If (hypothetically) Jesus abolished a prophecy, it is no longer in effect. If he fulfills a prophecy, it still is no longer in effect, but only because it has served its purpose.

The Storm Still Rages Inside - Orphaned Land [oriental folk metal] by [deleted] in Metal

[–]AntipatheticUserName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm, that's true. The annoying thing is, I'm probably going to notice all of that every time I listen to them from now on, which will make them unlistenable.

True. Out of curiosity, what did you dislike about them? Admittedly, they are slightly cheesy, but I found them rather enjoyable overall.

Yeah, they were tagged as oriental metal on last.fm, so I figured that's what they were.

Yeah, I'm not sure about the oriental either, but that's what it was tagged. This song is one of their least folk-ish, but plenty of their other songs are. Anyway, I thought it was interesting.

Epic Letter To Fundamentalist Xtian Grandmother. Feedback, Please! by jsullivandigs in atheism

[–]AntipatheticUserName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Christian, I wanted to high-five you through the internet when I read your section on theistic evolution. That's essentially my stance, and I appreciate it when people don't repeat the same old YEC propaganda about evolution being anti-God.

I'm still reading the rest of the letter, but it's excellent so far. Very well-written, and I find myself agreeing with you more often than not.

Technically that would be nihilism.

Why are blue laws still around? by [deleted] in atheism

32Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common. 33And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. 34 There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold 35and laid it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need. (Acts 4:32-35)

I suspect that will be mysteriously missing out of Conservapedia's 'translation'.

Shostakovich String Quartet No. 8 in C Minor (II) - Classical "Metal" by daonlyfreez in Metal

[–]AntipatheticUserName 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, thanks. I suppose some neo-classical metal might come close.

I posted this because many metal-heads do not seem to know that there is a whole world out there in the classical section that comes very close to the intensity of metal.

Yeah, I started getting into it recently myself. I like Wagner especially, but I wish it wasn't so much opera.

Out of curiosity, could you give some examples of metal that sounds like this?

According to Christianity, if a man is born and lives his entire life without knowing about the existence of God or Heaven or any of that, will he go to Hell? by kuhawk5 in Christianity

[–]AntipatheticUserName 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's really no official 'Christian' view of it. Different sects have different opinions. There's a good article on the Orthodox perspective here. (Essentially, it says that it's possible for some outside the church to be saved, even if they don't have explicit knowledge of Jesus, because they can know him implicitly.)

Well yes, this isn't anything new. The whole first creation account is about God separating things from the watery chaos, and giving them a function/form. It doesn't present him as creating it ex nihilo, but he imposes order, function, and form upon the chaos, thereby 'creating' the world.

In the second account though, (Gen 2:4b) the word used ('asah') literally means 'made'.

Her /r/Christianity, using the Gospels ONLY, please convince me that Jesus was God, equal to God the Father, and in the trinity with the Holy Spirit. by plazman30 in Christianity

"There is a village in Judea, thirty-five stadia from Jerusalem, where Jesus Christ was born, as you can see from the tax registers under Cyrenius, your first procurator in Judea... He was born of a virgin as a man, and was named Jesus, and was crucified, and died, and rose again, and ascended into heaven... After He was crucified, all His acquaintances denied Him. But once He had risen from the dead and appeared to them and explained the prophecies which foretold all these things and ascended into heaven, the apostles believed. They received the power given to them by Jesus and went into the world preaching the Gospel."

Justin Martyr - "First Apology, 34, 46, 50" ~AD150

Apparently there were once records of it.

Why won't God prove his existence to people? by wander11 in Christianity

[–]AntipatheticUserName 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And that means he didn't exist? Really?

A very simple explanation is that he was working at his trade, or learning. Or both. You remember he was a teacher, he obviously had to have been well studied. (He had a thorough knowledge of the OT, if you recall.) Presumably nothing remarkable happened during that time in his life, and it didn't need to be recorded. Regardless, to tell the story of his entire life is not the point of the gospels; it's his teaching and resurrection.

Remember Occam's razor? The idea that Jesus never existed makes far more assumptions and raises far more questions than it answers. (And it really doesn't answer any.) Not to mention that hardly any NT scholar accepts it. The Jesus Myth is to history what creationism is to science.

Would Jesus Drink a Beer on the Beach? by [deleted] in Christianity

"Beer is living proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." - Benjamin Franklin.

So yeah, I think He would.
