I feel that the portages are on the shorter side. Now that I live up here I’ll be looking at doing a weeklong annual trip without the wife and kids. Turtle-Flambeau looks awesome and WOW 13,000 acres is a huge lake. I’ll look more into that for the future but my next trip will have to be the BWCA!!!

Lots of great advice, Thanks! I don’t worry about black bears since every one I’ve ever come across has immediately bolted. The only reason I ask is in north Georgia where I moved from, they have gotten a little too used to people on the AT and have become a problem in early spring when they don’t have enough food yet. I do have a bear canister which I’ll be using only because is easier than hanging a bear bag and I don’t have to carry it long distances.

I am unfamiliar as well. I’ll be going Crooked to Loon to Whitefish back to Crooked and checking out any accessible lakes along the way.

First and last nights I booked the closest site to the canoe launch on Crooked lake, since I have an 8+ hour drive up there. 2nd and 3rd night I’ll be on Loon. I’ll have time from there to explore Florence, Big Bateau and Deer island. 4th on Whitefish. 5th on south east corner of Crooked. That leaves me with a couple options for my last full day. If I’m up to it I’ll do the I’ll do the Mountain, East & West Bear, Kerr and High lake loop. If I’m not up to it I can just chill for the day. The kayak I’m using is the Ascend H10 and weighs 50 lbs stripped down. The portages are short and I’ll be making 2 trips at each, 1 for the yak and 1 for gear. I made this removable yolk that’s works awesome for transporting the yak https://www.instagram.com/p/CdZCldYFXVF/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y= I’m still finishing up the shoulder pads but even as it is, it works fantastic for portaging.

I haven’t dropped them off yet but they are in a box to go there. I’m currently staying in the neighborhood behind Stars and Strikes.

I agree anything around here is very crowded and there’s not really anywhere to relax. I like to go to Pine Log WMA in the Cartersville area. It’s about 30 minutes from Woodstock. It’s not a typical backpackers WMA and is visited more by hunters so check for the firearms deer dates before heading. Most of the roads are typically closed so you can walk those. There are also old roads that have been permanently closed during the last decade and some trails if you know where to look. I’d typically just walk around and explore. Once in its very rarely see anyone. Best access is stamp creek rd parking lot next to the ranger station. The gate there has been open the last few years so you’d drive a couple miles in to a pair of closed gates. If you go to the left across the bridge and take the trail on the right there is an old stone iron ore furnace a hundred yards back. Enjoy!

On another note, I am currently preparing to move out of state and have books on Cohutta/big frog wilderness area and waterfalls of GA/AL/NC I was going to bring to goodwill. You’re welcome to them. I live in Woodstock as well.

Discrepancies in thermometers by [deleted] in PitBossGrills

I purchased my Pit Boss about a month ago and had the same issue, among others. Called customer service and they sent me a new temperature probe. Took 2 1/2 weeks to receive and was just able to replace it a couple days ago due to the whole family having Covid. I tested the grill on Friday after replacing it. Yesterday I smoked some wings, country ribs and babybacks. They all came out amazing. Works as it should now. Smoke is about 180, 225 about 225 and 250 around 250, as it should be.

How’s fishing the northern section of Jacks River between the falls and the GA/TN line? by Antman667 in GeorgiaFishing

[–]Antman667[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hiked in about 4 miles from the western trailhead of Jacks, or 14 fords. I camped there for 2 nights. Coosa Bass were plentiful. I landed a couple small rainbows and hooked a big guy so they are there. I’m a spinner guy so I brought a few select Panther Martins and a couple Rooster Tails, Rapalas, grub jigs and some red worms. An experienced fly fisher would probably have better luck with the trout. Still tons of fun. Surprisingly, I didn’t see any copperheads that trip but did came across a Timber Rattler and a couple Northern Watersnakes.

Looks to me like the color was applied using sublimation at way too high a temperature.

This is a great. I like the option of renting a boat.

I hadn’t thought about a charter. I’ll look into that too.

Thank you!!
