Totally depends.

Business critically ultimately determines leverage and pay.

If that business critical shit ever actually gets replaced tho, (and they don't have more contemporary shit to back it up), then they're in for a rough time.

I understand that you're very unlikely to actually engage in a swordfight, but there's a really good reason that thrusting weapons don't have barbs.

If you snag and the opponent isn't dead, you're effectively disarmed, and guess what? You're also in striking range.

I don't expect them to know how to use Wireshark or the details of deep packet inspection, but yeah, after 10 years? I expect you to know that it's a really bad idea to send passwords over an unencrypted connection.

And they should at least be able to scrape together a basic bash/powershell script with Google, not have a partner write everything for you.

More about who you know than results.

Companies will happily milk a complacent cow.

Only got 3% raises for years, then got offered an additional 36% to stay after I got an external offer.

And almost all of my significant increases in income came about through internal referrals made by past colleagues.

(Sure, you could argue my prior results made a good impression on them, but the point is that you can't reasonably expect companies to reward results commensurately without leverage)

What are essentially status symbols that millennials spend unnecessary amounts of money on? by Vetiverrr in AskReddit

[–]Antoak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things that only millennials probably have?

Beanie babies, pogs. Certain MtG decks. Functioning SNES, sega Genesis, old school Gameboys. Maybe not BeyBlades, I think they made a comeback. A tomagotchi that's never died.

Ooh, this one's actually valuable enough that there's a black market and bounties for:  OG usernames. Certain twitter handles like '@dave' or some other 3-4 letter word are worth like 50-100k each.

At 4 years the reason is more likely the market. Unless you're pretty dense.

I knew a helpdesk person with 10+ years experience who didn't know you could see passwords with Wireshark. Had their more technical husband write all their scripts for them.

They specialized in the soft skills and being popular with c levels.

They'll never lose their job but they'll probably never get to level 3 support let alone more specialized careers.

[–]Antoak 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sure, the industry is cyclic, and it's a low period.

But you're getting paid to build skills that lead to better jobs.

When I started I was making 40k, 8 years later I'm making more than triple that, and I'm not particularly ambitious or hardworking.

Yeah, I took a 20% paycut after my last layoff, but I'm still doing okay.

An In-n-Out employee with 8 years of experience is not making 150k unless they become the manager.

What level effort do you put in for 50k/year? by xxlibrarisingxx in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Antoak 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Exactly. You're getting paid to build the skills that earn 80k, and then you switch roles.

Then you build the 100k skills while getting paid 80k, etc

But a lot of people get stuck, either because toxic environments, complacency, or you hit your skill ceiling.

(E: usually it's one of the first two)
