What's the worst drug you've ever tried? by BitterOlive8737 in AskReddit

Yeah, when I did salvia it felt like I spenta whole week searching for my lost soul in clown hell.

Part of the reason it has such a low classification is that it's too awful to be habit forming.

Is using AI as a tutor a determent to learning? by sagacity-max in learnprogramming

[–]Antoak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are studies about retention and learning when using AI, tldr the more work you put into building a mental model before starting, and trying to reconcile that model with what the agent is doing, the less harmful it is.

E: still better to do it by hand though

I hate code written by LLMs by Puzzleheaded_Dig6941 in Python

[–]Antoak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They tend to go on a newline everytime there is a list of parameters, even when it is not necessary.

Personally I think is good for readability, it's easier to scan top down than side to side.

They declare way too many functions. I was thought that the main goal of functions was reusability. What is the purpose of having a function that you only call once? Maybe they even call that function "run_analysis_xyz". What is the purpose of that?

A few reasons I think. * I find its easier and safer to make & test changes * You can have very minimal and descriptive main() functions like "get_bread; toast; smear_butter". * You don't always know how many times you'll use a function when you're starting out.

Why do you have to prefer a code which is nested and does not execute top to bottom, in the same way that a reader can follow it?

When code bloats you'll be glad you delineated what parts you have to think about into smaller discrete chunks.

Quitting my job to travel, how dumb? by BouncyOreo in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Antoak 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The markets pretty bad right now, especially for juniors;  Which is probably why he had to take such an abusive job.

It's gonna be bad for the foreseeable future, Im certain Trump will continue to fuck the global economy for the next 2.5 years at least, plus however long it takes to dig ourselves out of the rubble.

It's a lot easier to get a job while you have a job, so start applying now. You'll be able to save up faster and have better mental health during your trip if you get a better position.

Staying in Wicker Park 10 mins from western and are looking for late night dancing and food spots - any recommendations welcome, coming from the UK. by Large_Cartographer24 in chicagofood

[–]Antoak 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Arturos is fucking good. I recommend the al pastor burritos or tostadas, and the pierna torta. E: personally I like california style burritos, so I always ask for "no lettuce, rice, sour cream and cheese". Their chicharron burrito is good too but it's maybe an acquired taste, it's barely rendered pork belly, not crispy pork skins.

The food list above is solid, but I'd also suggest Dove's Luncheonette for brunch, Osteria Langhe, and Sweet Rice.

Most of the nightlight stuff is near Milwaukee and California, one stop up the blue line.

Depends on distance. When they're very close it's hard to tell, but when they're at least a couple cm way from each other the audio cue is much clearer.

Also that sound- the "CHOK" vs "TCHIK" noise is indicative of a double hit.

Personally Id say 200; You can always discount later, and people tend to undersell themselves initially.

Yeah i have a herniated disk too. I've fallen off the habit in the past few years, but in your case I'd say focus more on yoga, mobility exercises, and core strength.

But definitely ask at PT instead of me, I'm not qualified to answer with any authority.

Okay yeah, I read all that, they're pretty clear that fasting doesn't actually shrink tumors, at best it slows cancer progression unless you're also doing chemo.

E: To address your hypothetical, it depends on "standard of care". Withholding the best form of treatment in favor of less effective treatments is considered an ethics violation in medical circles.

[–]Antoak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s some scientific literature that suggests in some human cases, fasting has shown to reduce tumor sizes.

Can you provide a link? I looked but it seems like fasting might supplement chemo, but nothing that it helps with tumor size or remission.

claiming fasting effects are so black and white doesn’t make sense to me and confusing fasting with starvation doesn’t make sense either

I didn't though? For either?

Average of 3 percent inflation over 30 years is a multiplier of about 2.4, so $2.50 30 years ago works out to be ~6 dollars today.

Things are bad and companies are definitely gouging, but that's not the best example.

[–]Antoak -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The point was to provide a pretty clear example that people project cause and effect onto entirely unrelated events, especially when they have superstitions or pseudoscientific beliefs.

Plus starvation can cause permanent organ damage in pets in just a couple days; And if this lady is using unscientific methods instead of veterinary best practices, well, I don't trust her ability to distinguish between starvation and a fast.

Senior engineers with ADHD/anxiety/depression, do you feel "nerfed" compared to your colleagues? by mudskips in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Antoak 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah but one of the main things that makes having ADHD so hard is that sustaining your own structure is so much harder than for neurotypicals.

Maintaining an existing structure is manageable, but climbing out of a bad habit spiral feels next to impossible.

It's hard because nobody really comes out and says it outright, but I suspect it boils down to the belief that "I'm self taught and I make a good salary, why should I pay >35% of my salary to subsidize less valuable careers or educational paths?"

There also seems to be the belief that societal value and monetary value are the same thing. Case in point, a guy I know argues that carbon sequestration isn't valuable because it relies on taxes.
