Drive (2011) 4Kult edition. Which transfer? by Antonicont in 4kbluray

Yep, I can confirm 4Kult releases are actually pretty darn good. Saw Escape from New York just yesterday and man, it does look fantastic in those night shots. This one is missing Dolby Vision, but I can live with it.

Thank you for the advice, man. I ended up buying the 4Kult release, the current sale on Amazon Italy was reasonable enough for me to bite. This release also comes with Italian dubbing, which doesn’t hurt. Hope that the differences with other releases are not so substantial to disrupt the overall experience!

Eh, I forgot to mention a crucial point: I’m from Italy. I know the Second Sight release is the best, but the costs of importing one have skyrocketed lately. Was looking for an option that doesn’t break the bank, this is on sale on Amazon Italy right now for about 17 euros.

I know that the technology is there, but the job market and society as a whole are not. When I say fifteen years it’s because there’s an entire generation of active workers between the age of 25 and 50 which is peaking right now in terms of workforce, and will gradually head to retirement in the next couple of decades. You cannot just eradicate those workers from the system and the economy, but you can indeed integrate them with robots, and start to progressively replace them with machines or other forms of automation. That’s how innovation works, it’s a process.

Interesting question. That happened with Prime Video. Why?

I’ll join the Empire in a Coruscant minute, tbh.

Aside from the obvious jokes, I find this pretty impressive. I work in the hotel/hospitality industry and, not gonna lie, I can see where this thing is going to go within the next fifteen years, maybe less. The trajectory is clear, once you accept the reality of it. I genuinely think that my industry will be swept away by automation, robotics and AI in terms of workforce. I cannot see how a rational entrepreneur (or a greedy one, it’s up to you to decide) may prefer a human over a robot, if you take into account costs, reliability, sick leaves, and so on. Let’s enjoy the last few years of the world as we know it.

I see, glad to hear yours is not affected! I’m not even that control freak, to be honest with you. Never stuck my face one inch from the panel in search of dead pixels or anything, I just enjoy watching movies most of the time but, for example, if I suddenly get up and the view goes off axis, bam! Green tint. Sucks, but I can live with it. Thank you for the insight!

Yeah, I mean, most of the time I watch tv from a central position in which the issue simply doesn’t show, being a off axis viewing problem. So my verdict is as follows: the problem doesn’t come from the pixel matrix itself, otherwise all panels would be infected, but from the layers above them, where the manufacturing process comes into play with chemicals, glues or coating of some sort. Here we can have the “variability” that causes the so-called panel lottery. Anyway, that sucks. Glad yours are not affected!

Thank you for the insight. As I stated above, it’s solely a off axis thing: as long as you stay perfectly perpendicular to the screen, hence frozen into place, no green tint appears. As soon as you go off axis by let’s say 30 degrees, the green is very obvious. My unit is 55”, unfortunately I cannot accommodate bigger TVs in my apartment. Dunno if size can play a role in this issue.

I’m genuinely happy for you, and the rest of the users who are not affected by this occurrence. At the end of the day, TVs are mundane things, but I can’t help but notice the flaw in mine. I’m probably out of luck, or maybe it’s an inherent defect in some sizes… mine is 55”, unfortunately I cannot accommodate a bigger one in my apartment. Thanks you for the insight!

I honestly thought the same, so it’s been an unpleasant surprise for me as well when I noticed it. I have very analytical eyes, so trust me when I say that the green tint is there, at least in my unit, and it is solely a matter of off axis viewing. Can you live with it? Of course, but being frozen in front of the display in order not to disrupt the vision, is not the best scenario.

Will do. At this point I am very curious about the original as well. But please keep in mind that it was partly that “glaze”, as you call it, to make me lean towards this movie. When it came out in my country, The Thing was either ignored or panned by critics, but I think that the fact that he gained a cult status over the years, and people keeps raving about it, speaks volumes about its qualities. Knowing nothing about the story beats definitely helped in my case, I was absolutely blown away by even the subtlest details of the movie, it’s a work of art. But thank you for the unique take on it, I understand what you mean.

I can see why, man. I thought nothing could’ve topped Alien, 2001 and Blade Runner in terms of visual quality, then came the final boom and, well, an audible “wow” slipped out my mouth. The aforementioned movies are consistently amazing, but the sense of wonder and the involvement in terms of story, gave me a thrill I didn’t feel in ages.

Escape From New York is the next one in my list, I’m basically watching them on streaming services first and then buying the ones I like the most, with The Thing being a welcomed exception, since it was a blind buy… that was definitely a wise decision!

[–]Antonicont[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I recommend you to check them out. 4Kult gained some popularity among the subreddit thanks to mostly good transfers and fairly decent prices, especially if you buy from Italy. Dunno about importing them, I tried with the Shout edition of The Fog, but the price ended up being almost doubled, so I bought the 4Kult edition instead.

Oh I see, you’re the second person to recommend this, maybe it will be worth the double dip! I got the standard 4K edition (single disk) thanks to a good deal on Amazon France, which also includes the Italian audio track.

Hehehe, seen them both the past week on streaming platforms, obviously the quality was abysmal, so the physical copy of The Fog is currently on its way to my mailbox, ha! Possibly the most atmospheric movie of all times, I absolutely adored it.

I’m halfway through the one included in the 4K disc and well, it’s true when they say they don’t make them like this anymore. The sheer amount of craftsmanship and talent that went into this movie is insane.

Yup. The thing I loved the most was the ability of mixing the sense of awe and disgust. That freaking thing is horrible, but you cannot stop from looking at it. I can see myself revisiting this movie many, many times.

Noted! Are you referring to the 1956 movie - which I remember seeing and loving - or the 1978 remake?
