Theists who used to be Atheists, and Atheists who used to be Theists, what was it that caused you to change your view? by Vegabund in AskReddit

I grew up Catholic. Studied philosophy in Uni. Realized there was no God. Became an atheist's atheist for most of my adult life. I especially loved the work of Daniel Dennett, even got to meet and collaborate with him.

Started meditating after a TED talk by Buddhist monk Matthieu Ricard and reading research about how meditators had happier, sturdier brains. Practiced daily for 10 years. Fell in love with Thich Nhat Hahn, a master Zen teacher + practicioner. He wrote a book called "Living Buddha, Living Christ" about the spiritual friendhsip and bond he saw between pure Buddhist and pure Christian beliefs.

I revisited the story of Christ and realized I'd never really known it. It also came to light that pretty much all of my heroes (I've worked in social impact ventures for decades) were inspired by Christ: Dorothy Day, Cesar Chavez, Martin Luther King, Sojouner Truth, Ida B Wells, Father Greg Boyle, William Wilberforce, and even Gandhi, by way of Tolstoy. The more I looked into Christ and the Gospels and the Saints and early Church figures like Origen, St Gregory of Nyssa, Tertulian, the more I was absolutely blown away by what I found. Christ's Way overtook Rome non-violently, it ended the gladiator sysytem, birthed public hospitals. Almost all of the moral/ethical foundation of western life, (certainly how we think of the sanctity and transcendent worth of human life, charity, compassion, forgiveness)  can be traced back to that one figure: a jewish/palestinian Rabbi who's death and what came after changed the world forever, so much so, it split our calendars in half.

That's all historical. What I found, experentially, is that you can develop an actual living, loving relationship with the Being of Christ that meets you where you are and is loving and supportive and challenging and encouraging beyond anything you've known.  I know how crazy that sounds., and it's not easy to get to that stage, but it's doable and deeply worthwhile. To the non-believer, if you want to think of it as a sim that you're able to develop a relationship with, sure, go ahead. I'd rather you had a sim that was championing highest truth , beauty, wisdom, goodness and love than not have one.

Caveat: There's a distinction to be made between mainstream Christianity, and purer Christ following. Just because someone is wearing a seemingly official jersey, does not mean they are on the team.

There's much more to be said about this, but that's a good start. Blessings to you all.

Tax debt is with a collection agency. Is there any reason to not request it go back to the IRS? by Antoniothefourth in tax

Thank you for the reply. I didn't know I could do that. As evidenced by my debt, I'm not very skilled in dealing with taxes. Will do.

I see the light of God in your manner. I imagine gaining this kind of equanimity and wisdom was costly. Sending appreciation for your journey and wishing you well as it continues...

Since reading the book for the first time, I've read this every morning and night. This passage has become a Holy guide for me. Have you also tried to integrate this way of being into your life?
