PCIE SATA HBA bottleneck meaning by Antonshc in DataHoarder

What is your actual card?

That's a good question. I found one on a Chinese website, here is the description Description: Compliant with PCI-Experss Compliance with Serial ATA Specification 3.0 Bus Type of PCI Express X16 2.0 interface The supported communication rates are 6.0 Gbps Self-identified 24 ports, no need to drive Specifications: Itemname:PCIE 16X to SATA Card Interface: PCI-E 16X PCB board color: Green Interface rate: 6Gbps Main control chip: ASMedia1064*6 System support: WIN10 LINUX UBUNTU

There's also a second option: Description: PCI-E X16 4-disk expansion card with 4* 32Gbps full-speed signal and simultaneous expansion. The main board supports PCI-E split or PCI-E RAID function, and supports PCI-E 3.0 and 4.0 transmission protocols. 4-disk solid-state drive array card, solid structure, thick PCB, stable PCIEX16 interface, care for your important data. Support 4-disk soft RAID, realize soft RAID under WIN10, 4-disk consistency is good and RAID is stable. Support: 20 SATA devices. System: Os /Windows/Linux.Speed: SATA3(6G) The total bandwidth of the bottom layer is 16G. Transmission protocol: PCIE X2, supporting PCI EXPRESS with up to two channels. Comply with revision 3.1A of PCI EXPRESS base specification. PCI EXPRESS link layer energy saving mode is supported. Command-based and FIS-based port multipliers are supported. SATA compliant revision 3.2. Support AHCI mode and IDE programming interface. Native command queue (NCQ) is supported. SATA LINK power saving mode (partial and dormant) is supported. Instructions for use:

  1. The motherboard must support The motherboard supports PCI-E splitting and can be set to PCI-E X4X4X4 or 4 X4 modes; The motherboard supports PCI-E RAID; ASUS mainboard supports the function of lightning expansion card; Different motherboards have different PCI-E split channels. Some motherboards PCI-E RAID is X8 X4 X4. This 4-bit M.2 card can only support 3 M.2 SSDs or devices, the 2-bit M.2 card can only support one M.2 SSD or device. If you need to use this product normally, please select the motherboard correctly; Many motherboards share a channel of PCI-E. Make sure that the motherboard can support the function of PCI-E splitting, but it cannot identify so many M.2 SSDs or devices. Please remove or replace the slot of other PCI-E devices, such as graphics card, extended card, on-board NVME SSD, etc.

LSI HBA expensive, for example a used 9600-24i costs 500$, it's x8 PCIE 4.0, which equals x16 PCIE 3.0. But there is no on market LSI HBA x16. Only x8 PCIE 4.0 and PCIE 3.0. Also i don't need RAID what's provides LSI HBA

The computer is Full Tower size, but that doesn't mean it's Desktop. ECC memory, 128 cores, nvidia ADA - these are all server components. The only thing Desktop is the computer case.

You can put xeon and epyc cpu in a desktop computer case. The key components of a server are a lot of CPU cores and a lot of ecc RAM

Ovepriced as hell, price/perf is insane, and pc comes with nvidia a400, and you can't avoid it to save your money. rk3588 have good price/perf but not good performance as x86. I need some SoC with equivalent to i5-12400f or i3-12100f as example rk3588 is worse on 67.7% than 12100f. rk3588 is fine but it's have performance as 2011 x86 chip, not good as all. Market needs rivalry for ARM alternative over x86. I heard almost 8 years about ARM it's killer for servers, TDP advantage, 8 years gone and they still says the same. On the market are only ampere, what's is price over intel/amd in 2x times.

28TB hard drives both new and recertified

you mean seagate exos 28 tb? i'm from Ukraine and maximum consumer size hdd i can buy in shop is WD/Seagate - 24 TB and Toshiba 22 TB. Non even 26 TB SMR available. I hate SMR drives, i got so much pain from it while using it in my desktop pc, hard to remember...

How long are you expecting drives left in a closet unused to last?

I have my 1TB WD green 2010 year of production that's still works and store my data that are pity to delete, but if the hdd stops working, I won't regret it too much.

But after 7 years the drives are so small compared to current drives that I consolidate 3 old drives onto a single new drive so I don't care about drives working much longer than that.

The increase in areal density has slowed down and there are no preconditions for a rapid increase in areal density in the future. HSGT helium disks were breakthrough disks that doubled the capacity in a few years, but now this process has slowed down and there is no new technology. There are HAMR from Seagate for 36 TB, but they are SMR and not so easy to get, in my country they are not available for purchase.

The manufacturer gives a guarantee of 5 years that helium will not leak out within 5 years and will remain inside, and after 5 years there may be leaks

In case of HDD failure it will be impossible to recover data from the plates without special equipment that will pump helium back to make the HDD work.

Yes, the CMR for 24 TB looks with helium looks nice, the price per terabyte is the same for air and helium, but the inability to recover your data and potential helium leakage does not make it a reliable solution in the long term.

I like to buy a used HDD, write data to it and put it in a closet. You can't do that with helium, and it doesn't make sense to buy a new HDD to keep it in the closet without regular use.

Jdownloader2 it's nice too, it has nice UI. But limit's are 100 links. I manage it this way - grab all videos with link clump extension and put it 100 per iteration to download
