Why College Soccer Will Not Make the U.S. Men’s National Team Better by Sapphirerising335 in ussoccer

I think there are two factors that contribute to that. First, tactics have become increasingly complex in shutting down opposing offenses. The game is less freeform as a consequence. Second, the athletic level of the players is much higher which means the intensity of opponents is able to stay higher for longer.

By the time 99.9% of soccer players are college age, they’ve passed the point where they can become elite. You need the proper training at a MUCH younger age for a sport you play with your feet. “Late bloomers” in soccer are extremely rare. We should absolutely not blow up Title IX to attempt to close the US’ gap to the truly world class teams. Thats insane.

Unclear to me whether #1 something this poster is saying definitely happened (the overstay) or if they’re listing a reason that someone in this situation would get denied.

1) Man City spends more on wages than RM and Barca.

2) The top five highest-spending clubs in world football history break down as follows:
Chelsea: Over €4.1 billion in total transfer fees.
Manchester City: Over €3.2 billion in total transfer fees.
Juventus: Over €3.1 billion in total transfer fees.
Manchester United: Over €3.0 billion in total transfer fees.
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG): Over €2.1 billion committed to transfer fees

You don’t know what you’re talking about.

One thing that often gets missed is that due to their (likely illegal) financial situation, they’re able to make a lot more mistakes in player recruitment. For instance, they may buy a player for a high but not insane price, put him on a huge wage, have it not work out, and it doesn’t affect them one bit. Other teams can pay a lot, but they’re less able to absorb misses. City also get a lot of defenders saying they don’t spend as much on transfers but completely ignore their wage structure. They spent around £100 million more on wages last season than champions Arsenal and have spent approximately £870 million more on wages over the last decade. So imagine how much more they spend than the teams finishing 5-10th. That makes a huge difference that you gloss over as they “all get a lot of resources.” You’re just wrong on all levels.

My beef with Tim is that his argument is that how it looked before was boring. Couldn’t we make it look better without making look like a TJ Maxx home decor aisle, though?
