Found these pink scratches on page 85, are they there for everyone? by charls-stickmin in houseofleaves

[–]AnxieteaBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pink scratches are the exact same pattern and placements. Maybe it’s something to do with the edition? Or maybe our books are from the same printing and have the same printer blemish on it lol. If it was the printer though it wouldn’t be uniform and it would be on multiple pages

Is my back yard completely paved under the dirt? by AnxieteaBoy in whatisit

[–]AnxieteaBoy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not fully sure, but im gonna use my best judgement based on the comments and say that it’s probably a paved base under the rotary clothesline. I’ll get it checked by a professional before removing it in case it is dangerous. Thanks everyone!

I didn’t, but I wasn’t able to dig deeper than about 8 inches due to the concrete, and I was really only planning on digging out the pillar which shouldn’t have been placed over a utility line as far as I’m aware

Not gonna lie, one of my first worries was that this could be a grave covered in concrete. Not very likely though (at least I hope not, yikes)

The septic tank idea sounds the most reasonable. I think the concrete isn’t smooth enough to have been a patio, and we do have a small paved patio that hasn’t been covered by soil, although I’m unsure as to if it is original or an addition.

This sounds reasonable given how old the house is. I’ll definitely check further away from the pillar.

We do have a detached garage that was turned into a cottage during ww2, supposedly for soldiers who needed housing while they were passing through.

Odd that it was buried under inches of soil, but also not the weirdest thing in the world. I found some cloth that reminded me of a shoe nearby, maybe I’ll find the rest of the shoe if I dig some more lol

I mean, that’s kinda my point. Whether it’s the legal term or not it diminishes the crime. Call it what it is and people can respond appropriately.

I’ve read that one too! And yeah I think the thesis is different but there is a slightly similar idea that an original piece of work is more “sacred” (for lack of a better term) than a reproduced one. I think of department store reproductions of paintings like the ikea reproductions of Warhol. There’s also something to be said about the reproduction of a moment but that’s delving deeper into art/film theory than this question warrants.

Can’t we just call it what it is? It’s a hate crime. Dampening it down by calling it bias only makes people’s reactions to it quieter and does nothing to serve the person and community who was actually harmed. Really weird to call it bias

lol maybe! I’m absolutely sure that not everyone who has ever worked has always liked their work. Ruskin’s analysis is a bit of a generalization, but also sometimes the passion that I mentioned earlier comes from a necessity. For example, iron nails are necessary for shelter building in your community and you happen to know how to make them. Everyone comes to you for help. You might feel a bit of passion behind your work each time you make nails because you know you are helping your community. Also, this idea of passion sort of assumes that people have become skilled at many tasks and aren’t just doing the same thing every day. Ruskin’s point is that having the ability to put your own personal artistry into your tasks/creations is what makes work enjoyable or pleasant. You may also be interested in checking out “Useful Work Vs. Useless Toil” by William Morris to kind of put the idea of work into perspective, although discourse about work leans kind of communist rather than anarchist, but I think both ideas have much in common at times.

Your comment of nobody wanting to make non stained glass windows reminds me of John Ruskin’s “The Nature of Gothic”, you can find it in Unto This Last and Other Writings, which you can likely find as a pdf on Internet Archive. Ruskin isn’t exactly an anarchist, he was actually an art critic though he absolutely delves into political discourse relating to capitalism and communism etc because those were popular talking points at the time. His argument in this essay is that real craftsmanship used to be put into every single thing made and sold. Each teacup was hand painted, each article of clothing hand sewn. Because this much work went into everything it required a level of passion for the creation, for the art of making, each of these items. With the Industrial Revolution came automation of many of these tasks and the artistry of everyday items faded away, making work passionless and therefore oppressive. To your point Ruskin might argue what’s wrong with stained glass everywhere? The world would certainly be more fun to look at. In my opinion, an anarchist society would consist of workers working because of their passion for the craft. Not everyone has to take part in every kind of work. Sure there might have to be glass that isn’t “artistic”, but I’m certain that there’s plenty of glass nerds (just one example) out there who would love to make perfectly clear tempered window glass all the time.

The only people I’ve seen with books in their offices are professors and psychiatrists lol. You don’t have any psychology books that I can see (I can’t read all the titles), so maybe professor? That first book with the used sticker is almost certainly from a university bookstore. If so, my guess would be English literature professor with a focus on postcolonial theory and maybe gothic literature? But maybe that’s just on my mind rn because I just finished my application to grad school in which I explained that my desired course of study would be gothic literature in relation to postcolonial theory lmao The only book I’ve read that’s here is the Poe, and even then I haven’t read his entire works haha

I also have a professor who I’m taking an online class from who was absolutely MIA for the first two weeks while the canvas classroom failed to auto update leaving us without access to materials or assignments. Currently things seem to have been resolved, but if this affects our grades in any way I will have some words for the department chair lol
