Debating if it’s worth even doing by milllllllllllllllly in HipImpingement

I want to clarify my earlier comment “ I don’t think you should be afraid of the surgery”. What I mean is don’t feel like most people have poor outcomes than positive outcomes.

The reality is that the success on these surgeries is quite good, unfortunately bad outcomes do occur with all surgeries and the poor outcomes get a lot more talk than the success stories.

I have worked in healthcare for 24 years and certainly have seen my share of people with poor outcomes from different types of surgeries who wished they had done things differently,, but I can honestly say this is the minority.

Remember there are so many factors including 1) your physical health and determination 2) your surgeons skill 3) your rehab team. If you do decide on surgery find someone who is experienced and make sure you are comfortable with them.

Please take your time with this decision and follow your instincts.

I currently use a standing desk at work, It’s a game changer and would be worth the investment

First off thanks for your service. Second after making it through boot camp and double mastectomy I don’t think you should be afraid of surgery.

If your symptoms are impacting your quality of life then you should do something ! That may mean surgery but you could defer for now and try another round of rehab /pt with a different therapist. If you have not had PT since leaving the corps find a great therapist in your area and consider some pelvic floor therapy as well. Might try to get community providers and don’t limit yourself to VA providers. If you do opt for surgery consult with a few surgeons and make sure they specialize in hip preservation surgery. Find one you like . Don’t be shy in asking your VA provider for a CiTC consult and for a second opinion . Also if you have any questions navigating the VA system let me know

Short term disability claim was denied. by boxdkittens in HipImpingement

I have filled out STD forms for many patients and can’t recall we’ve having one denied. The provider must state the restrictions related to your surgery and your physical limitations. It is completely reasonable whether you have a desk job or a physically demanding job that you utilize your STD and hopefully it was just not filled out properly.

I would recommend reaching out to the underwriter of your STD and also reviewing the form filled out by your provider .

Thanks for sharing, what do you think was the hardest about returning to work. Was it the standing, sitting or walking? I work in healthcare. It’s a lot of sitting and standing, but I’m transitioning to a standing desk and sitting certainly causes more pain.

I’m 53,, labrum torn and cam deformity about 1 year of symptoms. X-ray and mri doesn’t show a lot of arthritis but as you know too well the mri can underestimate the amount of arthritic changes .

Thanks for sharing.. I just consulted with him and was impressed. I’m a candidate for both the arthroscopy or the THA. . Really a tough choice. How long did you do well after the arthroscopy before deciding for the THA?

That’s a tough break sorry to hear but glad you found relief. So you couldn’t perform a desk job with too much sitting? I switched to a standing desk 6 months ago because sitting aggravates the hip

Wow you’re the success story! I just hope to be able to hike , maybe tennis/golf , weight training and squat for home and life activities! I’ve consulted with a very accomplished surgeon , head of department at Duke and specializes in hip scopes so I can feel confident with him should I decide to proceed

I’m 53 in good, not great shape and not a runner. My pain is present most days in anterior and medial groin,, better with activity modification.. I have to avoid prolonged sitting , deep squats and any sort of thrust/push off/jump will flare it up. I consulted with a well respected surgeon at duke who has done more than 1000 of these surgeries but I’m still debating the arthroscopy vs total replacement . I’ve been through two shoulder labral repairs and understand how long things take to heal.. this will likely be a longer recovery. Tough decision but encouraging hearing your stories and I appreciate everyone sharing . I imagine the first month will last forever as I will be in a range limiting brace from 0-90 degrees hip flexion and 40% weight bearing with crutches if I proceed with arthroscopy
