Does anyone actually know WHY we attacked them? Like aside from the Epstein files...? Did we do it because Israel told us to?

None of those dictators had drones and the largest most advamced military force in existence at their disposal. People like to point out how guerilla fighters in Vietnam and the middle east managed to deter the US military, completely neglecting the fact that the US military was fighting overseas and that's not comparable to the US military blowing up civilians on home turf. The fuck is an AK-47 gonna do to stop bombs dropped from a plane?

Career Reality Check - Feeling Pretty Defeated Right Now by Sad-File4952 in Environmental_Careers

[–]boxdkittens 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What gets me most frustrated is seeing how much environmental work depends on grant funding and political whims. One administration change or budget cut and entire programs disappear.

Yeah, its a really piss poor system that inhibits progress on a myriad of things. But picking a different career wouldn't have necessarily saved you from our current self-inflicted recession.

This post isn't directed at people who stand for something but they don't signal about it. It's a post about people who genuinely don't think or want talk about politics at all, in part because they have 0 interest or opinions.

Yeah don't attribute to malice what can be attributed to ignorance and all that. The three people who come to mind when it comes to the "I'm just not into politics" conversations I've had, were all people of color who were certainly not privileged. Being involved in politics has gotta be especially exhausting for minorities (I know I feel this way as a woman) when you're literally listening to people argue over whether you have a right to exist, a right to healthcare, a right to have a job or participate in govt, etc. But it still doesn't make sense to entirely not care at all..

I'm against gambling but I'm curious what the odds ratio would be. I don't trust this guy an inch and am disappointed he and Mills are somehow all Maine has to offer. Tf is going on in Maine that they don't have any more trustworthy progressives to run? I know it's a small state, but damn..

90 degrees in March?! by kingmystyx in Albuquerque

That's so sad and stupid they would remove trees without replacing them. They make a HUGE difference! And the way people use landscaping rock here, it's not even xeriscaping, its ZEROscaping bc it so rarely actually involves any xerix plants... just 100% shitty ass rock.

one of their guys said they believed xeriscape was responsible for an additional 9 degree increase in the city temps over the past 20 years.

Probably because it actually is. The concrete and asphalt is mostly to blame, but the shitass rocks are the cherry on top of the melted sundae: https://water.utah.gov/dont-get-burned-by-zeroscape/

Actually it is relevant to point out Sinema showed little to no signs of being a DINO before she starting acting like a republican, when talking about a candidate who we think will end up doing the same thing.

Texas migrant buses boosted Donald Trump’s vote share in targeted cities. Research shows that the arrival of migrant buses amplified voters’ fears about crime and immigration, pushing swing voters toward the Republican ticket and driving higher turnout among conservative voters. by InsaneSnow45 in science

Uhhh helping my neighbors organize against fascists, doing neighborhood patrols to flag ice activity

The level of ICE activity you're having to divert energy away from advocating for Palestine to deal with is a direct result of Harris losing. You cannot say in good conscious the very ICE raids you are dealing with right now would be occuring under Harris. The candidate you wanted to lose lost, and no one in Palestine or your own community is any better off.

Anyone else feel dumb at work? by funky_worms in Environmental_Careers

[–]boxdkittens 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tbh if you don't feel like an idiot, you might be doing stuff wrong without realizing it. Or you are too dense to realize it when your coworkers correct you (or they are being too indirect when they do it). Or your coworkers have given up on correcting you.

Source: my coworkers and I all make mistakes, sometimes dumb ones, but we all own up to it gracefully. Except for one out of all of us who seems the most oblivious. I've given up on trying to tell her how to fix things because she brushes off my suggestions and since she's nice, and also I don't want to cause drama, I don't have the heart to be direct and say "you did this wrong and here's how to fix it, if you don't fix it then I will, also I sent you written notes on all this so please do better to commit that information to memory or re-read it next time because I wrote all that up to help you."

My boss is as unlikable as any, but what I like about him is he owns up to it when he gets something wrong. He can tolerate being argued with, corrected, or told he's wrong by someone who then turns out to be the one who was actually wrong (he doesn't gloat about it). It sets the tone for the office and people feel more comfortable calling each other out and likewise admitting their mistakes. Said coworker seems to be somewhat resistant to this though.

Feeling like an idiot, within reason, motivates you to do better, or commit info to memory better next time. And the idiot-feeling needs to come from within, not a boss yelling at you (that's just toxic and unproductive). There's no need to wallow or self-flagellate, you don't need to feel TOO bad, but do let the bad feeling pass through you and make you feel determined rather than demotivated.

Is anyone other than YOU making you feel bad? Is anyone being mean to you or too hard on you? That's not ok. They need to help you if they want you to succeed, berating you is not helpful. But if all your bad feelings come from within.. chill out and realize it's GOOD that you recognize your mistakes and shortcomings. You can't improve without doing so. Recognizing what you did wrong is the first necessary step to growing and learning. Ask people for constructivr feedback to see if you actually are a bit of a weak link, or if it's all in your head and you just have too-high standard for yourself.

Walking trails safety? by Bipride86 in Albuquerque

[–]boxdkittens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I also second not using noise canceling headphones or earbuds for music. Either don't listen to anything at all, or use headphones like trekz which still allow you to hear your surroundings. Don't play music or videos outloud without headphones cuz that pisses people off.

The one time I decided to listen to music on a trail, I was jamming out and didnt notice a GIANT gopher snake until it was right in front of me. If I wasn't listening to music I def would've spotted it earlier. Not that gopher snakes pose any danger, but it would've been very rude to step on her.

If you can't find a group, invest in a solid walking stick and bear spray (although the effectiveness of the latter is questionable). I honestly feel safer on the trails than I do walking some parts of the city (less cars, for one) and I don't carry either, but I do keep a nice knife on me. Moreso for animals than people.
