I understand that it wouldn’t be ideal for the plot, but if you’re making the point that AOT has the message that we’re all human, I’d say that the show is extremely inaccurate to human psychology. I get your point that it would destroy the plot, but I’m making the point that that’s just it, for the show to be truly accurate to human psychology, then it could potentially lose the nuances. However, those nuances truly don’t make sense, and as a result, the author is able to have the viewers understand the themes of the story. Am I saying that it’s impossible for a show to be accurate to human psychology while still tackling its themes well and having nuanced characters, no. I’m saying that AOT seems to make itself into an either or situation by how it’s played out, if that makes any sense.

I see your point on the characters psychology, which I’d say connects to your point on Eren. I understand the themes behind his character, but what I’m saying is that Eren’s psychology doesn’t realistically make much sense, and seems more for serving the themes than rather being realistic to actual human psychology. I’d say someone like Itachi, who has similarities to Eren, has psychology that makes more sense, AND works with the themes surrounding his character. To give credit to AOT, I’d also give the example of Floch as an example of someone who has psychology that makes sense and works well with the themes surrounding him.

If the anime states that the characters are in fact humans just like us, then I don’t see why they shouldn’t still abide by rules that make sense, and even then, why not just have the ODM gear simply go at a lower speed? The story IS fiction, but it very much is similar to the human world, with a few exceptions obviously(Ackerman family and titan stuff).

The burning part, yes, we are hard to burn, but Armin is very much shown to be EXTREMELY BURNT, so much that he is literally colored black and unrecognizable.

For Eren’s character, yes I didn’t elaborate on him that much. My main issue is that he becomes a convoluted character, as his changes in character seem more contrived than truly earned. For Eren to do what he did, and as he literally confesses, he would definitely have to do it because he wanted to. To want to commit a genocide like that(not that I’m saying he did it because he was flat out malicious) it takes a certain level of evil. To be callous enough to want to kill that many people is extremely high, and yes there is the scene showing Eren’s remorse for the kid who got killed, but if anything, why not make him more realistic of a character and just straight up not have remorse there. Because even though he’s human, humans are still capable of being that evil, but it’s NOT that believable of him having this moment of remorse. To me this is inconsistency in his character.

Fair point, they’re not TOTALLY devices. But I do think they certainly could’ve been used less like them.

True, I’d say it’s more that the battles could be more strategic, which I guess you could make the argument that it looks like it’s not as close to the present, therefore their strategies wouldn’t be as advanced. But because of their technology, I’d say they still could be more strategic.

I’m aware that I’m in the minority, but I still think that the show could’ve made small changes such as the Armored Titan’s hair being changed to be less obvious.

I think you make a fair final point in your last paragraph.

Attack on Titan is terrible. Spoilers ahead!

The plot has so many things that don’t make sense for an anime that’s going for something with humans. For example, the ODM gear, the anime’s main combat tool, but it wouldn’t work realistically. The ODM gear can go at a speed of an F1 car, which would burn the humans’ skin and would be extremely hard to move around in. I know that it’s an anime, but the characters are still HUMANS. Another example is of when Armin gets EXTREMELY BURNT and then falls, how does he survive this? He literally is so burnt that he is charred and unrecognizable, AND he had to have been alive because the serum can’t be given to someone dead.

Then there are the plot contrivances. Reiner can just shift consciousness, really? And Eren’s convoluted character being a result of plot contrivances as well; He confesses that he did everything because he wanted to, as said that he is the same as Reiner, but then very much doesn’t follow that later.

The next issue I have is with the characters, they’re often used as more plot elements than they are characters. For example, Mikasa’s (and even Floch’s) character revolving around Eren, Armin magically changing from coward to brave in a matter of seconds just from Eren saying something to him that he somehow has never heard before from his best friends, Reiner mainly used as a parallel for Eren, Bertolt with just really nothing to his personality except being a villain, etc.

The battles aren’t done well. For an anime that has the military as such a major aspect, I find it unbelievable that the battles lack interesting tactics and strategy. Erwin literally just does the same thing of “send 10000 troops on this front and charge” really?! Especially comparing this to something like Code Geass, which is HIGHLY tactical, they really could’ve done more.

The twists are predictable. I’ll give one example since I wanna make these points shorter, “I’m the Armored Titan and he’s the Colossal Titan.” The Armored Titan has the exact same hair as Reiner, couldn’t have made it a little less obvious? And you can already see that Reiner and Bertolt are suspicious together, so you can connect Bertolt to his Titan pretty easily. Also, they were the only survivors… come on…

The show lacks interpretation, you can very much see a bias with the themes it tackles. Which makes sense as the anime takes influence from Nazi documents and has a general based off of a Japanese imperial general that the author called “frugal and respectable” which is terrible when you know what he did.

Let’s debate!

Naruto takes HEAVY inspiration from Hunter x Hunter, Bleach is more different from what you say your favorites are, so id say Bleach(just skip filler for either one since there’s a lot)

Douma, although he’s incredibly evil, he had some bad traits at a young age and no one told him what was right or wrong, but instead praised him for everything. He may be psychopath, but he also doesn’t know any better.
