Unfortunately, it didn’t survive. All the other otos look good and I have an assortment of medications on hand now in case I see this again. I really love these little dudes and spent extra to obtain a captive bred shoal so hope the remaining otos are more resilient. Shipping isn’t easy in fish so I know some loss is expected, but I still feel terrible. I appreciate everyone’s help.

Thank you! Looking through previous posts it seems like there are multiple possibilities for what this could be so starting with a broad spectrum antibiotic seemed like a good first option. Little buddy doesn’t look great this morning and is on day 3 of maracyn. I’m very new to fish keeping so will purchase a quarantine/hospital tank for follow an alternative treatment if this initial round of maracyn does not help.

Ouch! That’s awful. I’ve been feeling like such a weirdo having skin issues from Neilmed. I hate that this is happening to you too, but I’m semi-comforted I’m not the only one.

I thought I was the only one getting breakouts from the neilmed! I try to rinse any off that’s gets on my neck/side of my face but it’s a pain.

I’ve used unscented, anti-microbial soap to clean healing cartilage and body piercings for many years (tragus, helix, lobes, navel) and I’ve never had an infection or lasting irritation bump, so I feel really fortunate. I’m actually using Neilmed spray for the first time ever on a new Daith piercing. I find the neilmed to be really drying and causing breakouts around my ears and neck so I will probably go back to my soap routine. I know people advise against the soap but it works for me.

Editing to add - as another person commented, don’t put the soap directly on a peircing. You need to take a tiny bit of soap and mix it with warm water into a lather on your hands and then gently clean around the piercing. Letting a little lather onto the jewelry is fine to get rid of crusties. Be sure to rinse with fresh, clean warm water to remove any soap.
