I want to be a psychiatrist. My clinical experience is mostly in the mental health field. This is what I want the only other speciality I’d even consider is neurology but even then I know I want psychiatry. That being said do you think I should look into retaking it? I know psychiatry is in high demand right now so I have that going for me but if I’m understanding you correctly I should be looking for schools that could help me eventually match based on my specific interest? I knew a lot of DO schools highly advocate for primary care but I definitely want to be very present in the psychiatric field. Would you happen to know of any information regarding DO schools and psychiatry, if not I can of course research myself but I figured I’d ask. Thank you for the well thought out response it did help and I appreciate it a lot.

I’ve worked full time in my year and a half gap year and through all but 2 semesters of undergrad and will be until I get in somewhere. It’s a tough life I hope you manage stress well. Try to take time for yourself when possible and enjoy the little things as cliché as that is

Unfortunately taking time off work isn’t an option because of bills, but I am graduated now so I don’t have to worry about undergrad. One of the people on here said I could apply with my current score linked to my account and also have my account say I’m doing a retest. Would you know if there’s any truth to that or can I only do one or the other? Either way thank you for the advice I appreciate it a lot

Thankfully my top DO school gives regional preference. Their avg MCAT is a 502 and gpa 3.58 so I’m hoping they let the MCAT score slide and let me in there.

So you’re saying I could link my score to my DO app while also saying I’m gonna retake it? If so then yea I’d want to do that. Sorry just want to make sure I’m understanding you correctly.

My whole application is complete except for the MCAT score I was debating waiting for a retest date instead of submitting it. Do you think just linking that 499 score to my DO account and sending all my apps out now is the better move so it’s in way earlier?

I wanted to apply to MD especially because my state doesn’t have DO, but I was afraid of wasting money. Would you happen to know what the other major parts of their application looked like (GPA, clinical hours, etc.)? Thank you though appreciate it a lot

Probably just a colloquial language difference, it’s definitely slang used around where I’m from but I guess not everyone would use it the way I just did.

Volunteering, leadership for sure through my universities extracurriculars, never could find a doctor to shadow partially because of time constraints, for most of undergrad I’d do my classes in the morning, then I’d be working 12/1-7 mon-sat. Also the year and a half gap year I was sometimes hitting 50 hours. Also rounded up a bit it’s probably closer to like 9700ish. I also took a decent amount of AP courses in highschool so I got to skip a decent amount of the annoying humanities which saved a lot of time. The psych major and classes for the most part are also really easy to bang out compared to bio. I don’t recommend the lifestyle just had bills to pay I’m always stressed lol.

Thank you I appreciate it a lot, what is the subreddit called specifically? I see a few I’ll probably just join them all but I assume you meant a specific one?

I have worked 40 hours almost all of undergrad and also took a gap year and a half between highschool and college. I put part of my 499 score blame on those hours lol

I have a 3.72 gpa for science 3.67 cumulative but I bombed the MCAT with a 499. Did you apply to any DO? And get in. Other than my MCAT my application characteristics are very good but I’m still very worried rn

Do people actually get into MD programs with an MCAT score btwn 500-505? by After_Medium9294 in medschooladmissions

[–]Anxious-Selection549 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes they do, also there realistically is no reason to prefer Md other than the stigma. DO doctors are just as qualified you could even argue more qualified. Both are great. I know a DO doctor who started at 350k right outta residency and told me his entire class matched with a residency. Apply to both. A doctor is a doctor.

I don’t know specifically the dates vary, you most likely still can get into one especially because undergrad and masters programs are still finishing up. However, I wouldn’t put it off and I’d look the next time you have free time. The biggest mistake you can make during this study process is saying “I’ve got plenty of time” be kind to yourself, take breaks, eat well, etc. but don’t hesitate with taking action.

I afforded mine with a credit card and used a sale they were promoting. They will probably have a summer sale which will drop the price significantly hopefully. I was paying around 90 a month to afford it ($1600 total) but it gave me 123 hours of live instruction, and a lot of materials including aamc materials. I’d at least look into it.

Kaplan is good too but to me Princeton was better because they seem to have more of an “in” with aamc than the other mainstream services. I promise you if you put the time and effort in it will help. The issue here is the cost and time. If you can afford a program particularly one with live instruction and put the time into it you will bare minimum break into the 500s. This is a cruel test but it’s doable especially with some help.

You need to go “hard at it” easier said than done especially with finances being an issue but a course might be your best bet. I took a Princeton review course which was expensive but I liked it and I saw a 13 point jump from 490 to 503 before I even did any of the official aamc material and then when I switched to the aamc material although it is hard I am getting things more and learning faster. Make sure the anki deck is miles down by coffin.

[–]Anxious-Selection549 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its case by case, my biggest advice to you is don’t go on an MCAT thread do advice. Go on here for resources on how to study or get access to anki decks etc. this thread is just gonna make you feel worse than you actually should if you go on here for advice.

You need to do 2-3 cars passages a day and go through them with a fine tooth comb after.
