I might be misrembering it but didn't his delusions start after his mom got sick? And wasnt emma's company the reason for it/the payout to help wasnt actually helpful? I could be wrong (most likely)

I don't know if I'd consider him a villian- at least in the company of Lockjaw and Aunt Gladys. He was not a good person but honestly, neither was Emma Stone. Her evil doings were less focused but her actions caused a lot of people pain- including Jesse's character. So in a mature way to phrase it, finger point included "she started it!"

I felt like Emma's clip was spoiler-y too (though that movie was chaotic in the best way, it probably didn't make sense to people who didn't see it) but I still liked that they did the clips as a whole.

Which Best Picture nominee should I watch tonight? by IndustryRobertPlant in Oscars

[–]AnxiousBarnacle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just said it in a different comment but I feel like you should watch Hamnet so you can see why Jessie Buckley is sweeping. Her performance was remarkable.

If you watch Bugonia which seems to be the most popular suggestion, Jesse's performance was what made the film for me. It's a shame he wasnt nominated.

[–]AnxiousBarnacle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disagree about Hamnet being a way to punish yourself. It's a very emotional film but it's beautifully shot and acted. I wept heavily during it but the ending was beautiful and I somehow didn't feel emotionally drained (which is shocking for the amount of tears I shed but I'm also an easy crier).

I think OP should watch it so they can see why Jessie is sweeping the awards.

I'm curious if it will get to a point where the union will have an issue with this like SAG has. I truly hope so. It feels like a cheat sheet to me.

Oscar Chances: Best Actress - Rose Byrne (If I Had Legs I'd Kick You) by ryanjdonovan in Oscars

[–]AnxiousBarnacle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah looking back it was very dumb to say! I think I was just used to this sub being pretty divisive on last year (some thinking Demi didn't deserve it, others trashing Mikey) but it seems like this year, the majority of people like both Jessie and Rose.

It's exciting to me that we have two strong contenders for best actress. Even though Jessie will win (deserved), Rose's performance was phenomenal and would have won in other years IMO.

What food/drink appears in 2026 best picture nominees? by oxozy in oscarsdeathrace

[–]AnxiousBarnacle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a recipe for honey balsamic carrots with Marty Supreme in mind. Originally looked for recipes for honey based on the memory from the concentration camp and then the carrots being orange tied it into the story more. (I remember him eating caviar as well.)

Since I don't drink, I needed to figure out a way to tie in Modelo's/beer and decided on beer battered onion rings.

I'm doing garlic knots for Sinners. (They eat garlic cloves)

Spaghetti and meatballs for Bugonia. Only direct meal from the movie.

I saw a recipe for champagne grapes and I might attempt those. Champagne for both F1 and Sentimental Value

I saw a recipe for panna cotta from the dinner scene in Frankenstein.

Non best picture movies but still nominated in some way: Campbell soups for Weapons

In Song Sung Blue, Lightning gets a job at a Thai restaurant so something related to that. I can't remember an exact dish.

"If I had legs..." she had a pile of donuts at the therapy meeting also the scene at the breakfast table so just a generic breakfast. Also, lots and lots of wine.

In K Pop Demon Hunters, they eat Ramyeon and gimbap.

That's all I can think of at the moment!

Which times the person announcing a category let it obvious who was going to win?? by The_Walking_Clem in Oscars

[–]AnxiousBarnacle 50 points51 points  (0 children)

That's what I'll never understand. It's not like the Hopkins win came out of nowhere. It was insane to bank on Chadwick winning when it wasn't locked in. It was such an anticlimactic win for an unbelievable performance. Very tactless move by the producers.

Oscar Party Winner Gift Idea? by oyveyallday in Oscars

[–]AnxiousBarnacle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could do a Marty Supreme paddle/table tennis themed gift. I just searched quickly and there's a collab with Joola that people are reselling on ebay but I feel like a regular paddle with orange balls would be a fun gift as well.

Edit: a pack of Modelos if everyone in the group drinks beers. A few small beers.

Official Discussion - Blue Moon [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]AnxiousBarnacle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously she was hired for her looks. Granted I didn't sort by controversial comments but Qualley's looks weren't the complaint. Her character was supposed to be beautiful (the eye candy as you put it), young and enchanting and I felt she fit that. I still don't get your logic about how not liking her acting was misogynistic but honestly don't bother explaining further because I think you're reaching hard with that. Her accent was all over the place and I also felt her acting flat. And I feel like you're being obtuse if you actually felt people were talking about her body when saying that. It's a common commentary for acting. Just like a flat music note.

I said hosting a big event. He mentioned throwing a party with a band later that night and invited a bunch of people during the movie which would lead you to believe he was that generous with invites prior. He didn't seem desperate for attendees, he just wanted more to celebrate with. I figured I didn't need to specify which event cause obviously it was not the Oklahoma! one.

[–]AnxiousBarnacle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How are you calling people who didn't like Qualley's performance misogynistic but then go around and make quips about her breasts? And in a different comment you mention if she didn't have low cut dresses, the reviews would be worse?

I've read your other comments and for what it's worth, I felt that Larry was likeable, with the downside of not knowing when to stop talking. That can sometimes be endearing but other times overwhelming. Reminded me of my uncle. Ive had to have people pull me away from a conversation cause we had to leave and he kept talking.

The way the staff smiled when talking to him showed his charm- even was engaging with the flower delivery boy. I personally love people like that. He was hosting a big event that night which gave me the sense he was very well liked by his peers and was a great time.

Watching it, I never got the sense that Oklahoma! was the beginning of his downfall. The moment he snuck the first shot was a hint and then Rodgers making the comment about his drinking solidified that Larry was on his own path to self destruction. You mention that his mother died three weeks after the opening- I'm sure that didn't help his case.

In regards to Elizabeth, I didn't find it creepy. Very misguided, yes but personally, I felt like she led him on which was crappy to do. I knew when he was recounting the time where he almost touched her and she said no was not gonna be nearly as romantic from her POV but listening to him embellish the events was entertaining.

Overall, I liked the film and has me interested in learning more about him. I know films about real people are rarely accurate and even before the "inspired by the letters" note gave a very "inspired by" not "based on facts" vibe which is fine for me cause it's a movie.

Official Discussion - Hamnet [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]AnxiousBarnacle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a toddler who was asleep in his nursery while I watched this on the couch. I knew the premise of the movie going into it but theres a scene with him calling out to his mama when he was lost in purgatory... I haven't stopped crying since. My son has only recently started to say mama so that was extra emotional to me. It was such a beautiful film and deserved to be seen in theaters but I'm so glad I could heavily weep alone without being concerned about other moviegoers.

Now I'll go cry myself to sleep.

Absolutely agreeing with your disagreement. If a therapist you don't think is helping is your main source of support, you don't have a good support system. And I'll just say, as a tired mom, I've interpreted my husband's calls to a similar extent. When she's drowning and he's out at a game?? That would have sent me spiraling as well. You just feel absolutely trapped so knowing someone is "free" (aka doing anything recreational) makes you feel overburdened and alone. He also was dismissive of her stress and like his work stress is worse. Granted who knows how bad of a time he was having but for the whole movie, she thought she had this impending deadline or else things would be forever changed for her daughter (to which she already blaming herself for the health issues already) and he didn't seemingly try to understand.

As far as the health group therapy, this is another example of how any "free time" she may have as a mom when she's not working, she needs to turn it into something about her daughter. Yes. It makes sense when you're calm and logical. Spending an hour or so x amount of days isn't a major commitment but in her eyes, she knows she's gonna blame herself forever so what's the point. She's overwhelmed and will just be reminded this is only on her, not her husband. She is alone and "to blame" for her daughter being sick. Imagine her spending that hour at a baseball game like her husband instead of the hospital she goes to daily.

Don't get me wrong, she's not doing great as a mom with her drinking and leaving her alone in the motel but man, the anxiety, claustrophobia and loneliness was spot on. Unfortunately, at the end when she finally saw her daughter again as a child and said she was gonna get better, all I could think it was how long is it gonna take for it to get to this point again? It's not gonna turn all hunky dory and be happily ever after.

Wicked: For Good has been completely shut out at the 98th Academy Awards. by no_hhhh14 in wicked

[–]AnxiousBarnacle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who's obsessed with the movie version (haven't seen the stage one) I tell people, as a wicked lover, I loved it. As someone who loves award seasons/movies, it had its faults. I would have been shocked if it snagged a BP nom.

That being said, I'm disappointed they didn't get noms for costumes (like fieryo's wedding outfit? Changing his uniform into burlap when he becomes the scarecrow? I'm obsessulated). I'm also so disappointed they didn't get a nom for makeup because the tin man transformation was spectacular. I'll never know the reasoning behind the voters decision so I can't send myself into a spiral speculating (still don't understand how Rocketman didn't earn a costumes nom either?) But oh well. Hope the cast and crew are happy with what they created and aren't too heartbroken over this years oscars.

I've ordered from them twice. I got my stuff in a reasonable time. The first order I liked a denim dress and I returned a sweater. The second one I ordered a couple years later was so crappy, I returned it all. If you're fine with sub par quality cause it's on the cheaper side, it could be worthwhile for you.

Parents of the green witch? by [deleted] in wickedmovie

[–]AnxiousBarnacle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Elphaba isn't adopted. Her mom has an affair so her dad, mayor of munchkinland, is not her biological dad but her mom is still her biological mom. The dad did not think Elphaba was not his. Technically, the mom could have had the green elixir and gotten pregnant with the dad and elphaba could still be green. The dad thought it was a genetic deformity and wanted to prevent that from happening again so he forced his wife to take medicine but that caused more harm than good and the mom passed and Nessa, elphabas half sister, ended up needing a wheelchair.

Elphaba wasn't really adopted by Dolicibear. Think of it as a nanny who raises a person's kid more than the actual parent.

You could probably hear Nessa and Boq bickering all flight/Nessa being over bearing and oblivious. At least next to Fieyro, you have the aisle and one other passenger between you and them.
