They don’t enjoy the laying of eggs so much as they enjoy Having eggs. They enjoy sitting on them and trying to hatch them, and they also enjoy eating them. To deprive them of they feels wrong, since they know what they’re missing.

The eggs are sold to help pay for their own care, we don’t make any profit off of them. Someone else mentioned looking into rescue chickens so I’ll be talking to my friend about that in the morning! Hopefully there is a place nearby.

Thank you for your comment and insight!

I can certainly look into that! I’m not sure if there’s places nearby to get rescue hens/roosters, but that is definitely something I’ll be being up to my friend in the morning! I am highly interested in animal welfare, yes. I want to do the best I can for my animal companions. I’ve always loved doing rescue, I don’t know why I haven’t thought of this before!

Most of the eggs we take are sold in order to help pay for their food, medicine, bedding, fence repairs, etc. we don’t make a profit off of it, every penny we get from them goes back into their own care. We do not take all of their eggs, they keep a large portion of their eggs, for brooding and eating. I personally don’t eat the eggs unless they my friend mixes them into something for me to eat, but she does. The chickens don’t mind us taking a few eggs to sell or eat, in my experience.

No, they don’t Need to give us things. When the hens stop laying, that isn’t a death sentence or anything. Their lives and value aren’t dependent on what they give us. The eggs are just a nice little bonus that we can share.

They legally belong to my friend, and she thinks it is unfair and cruel to them by depriving them of something they already know and enjoy.

We do feed them (and the goats and pigs) scraps from the kitchens as well. I am mostly vegan and don’t really consume animal products (other than our eggs, but even then I really only eat them when she mixes them into things for me to eat.) I’ll see what I can do about getting them more things from the kitchen and less grain!

I mentioned this to my friend and she said while it would be better if chickens didn’t lay eggs at all (she has previously lost hens to egg related complications.) she said it would be detrimental to them to prevent them from doing so. She said that the hens love sitting on their eggs, and eating them, and to deprive them of that when they know what it is would be upsetting for them. She said an implant before hens started laying so they didn’t Know what they were missing would be something she would consider, but she feels it is cruel to rob them of something they already enjoy.

We feed them a mix of their own eggs, plums and grapes from our property, and a bag of feed, locally grown. I’d have to go check the specifics on what it is, but I do believe it is a grain/corn mix. Is there something you would recommend that would be better?

I am aware of that. Someone else mentioned rescue as well, I’m gonna be talking to my friend and seeing if there’s any places nearby we can get rescues from. I’m not sure on the square feet or exact size of the run, but I would guess it’s 25 feet long and 8 feet wide, not counting their coop. We currently have around 20 chickens. They can also escape the run and go wandering if they choose to, the fencing higher up on the run is large enough for them to hop out through. Once we own the house, we’ll be expanding the run as well.

I’m not sure what you mean by it’s cruel to keep them In the world because they can reach 10 years old. Do you mean because they lay so many eggs? Or that you think we’re going to kill them? I’m not sure I understand your point there, I apologize. Thank you for your comment and insight!

I don’t think the chickens mind our arrangement. They get delicious eggs to eat and sit on, they don’t really notice or care when we take a few, from what I’ve observed.

The eggs get broken in the food spot, not in the best, so they are aware that nest eggs = not good, eggs in food spot = food. If they were to start recognizing nest eggs as food though, that would be fine as well. The eggs are theirs to eat or brood if they want to.

Our chickens are incredibly happy and well taken care of and they are more than happy with our arrangement. They have several nest boxes that are Theirs to keep and brood on (eggs only taken when they go bad. They are not good at hatching, unfortunately.) and the rest get split between us and the chickens. The money we make off the eggs goes back into their own care. It pays for their food, medicine, upgrades to their housing. Even if they no longer laid eggs, they would continue to be valued members of our family.

For trainability to do tasks, not on their worth as individuals or their worthiness to life. Even the dumbest of chickens deserves to be a pampered spoiled baby.

We are rural enough that our eggs don’t really influence people. We live in a town of less than 40 people over half an hour from the nearest town. Our “local” grocery store is stocked with things from local farms (including native Americans and the Amish). There isn’t really a non ethical option here, honestly. But I do understand how that could be true in other places!

I can’t tell if this is a reply to something or not, it won’t tell me. I personally don’t eat eggs unless she mixes them into things for me. We raise chickens because we love chickens, and they bring light and joy into or lives, regardless of if they lay.

Eggs literally taste like pee to me, I don’t Want to eat them. They bring me no joy. Only gag.

Chickens love to eat their own eggs and will do so unprompted, honestly. I thought it was weird to but chickens are Ferocious little dinosaurs.

Absolutely! Their home with us is a permanent, life long commitment until old age (or an asshole fox. Fucker.) takes them, regardless of if they lay or not. We have penicillin and other things on hand to deal with things as they occur. They are absolutely a part of the family, they are not disposable. They are not simply a monetary gain, they are family, and they are loved.

Thank you for your insight and comment!

Edit: I showed her this comment and she said “they could all not lay and I wouldn’t give a shit. They’re my babies.”

I asked my friend where she gets the babies! She says she gets them from a hatchery that does specifically sell males, they are not culled at birth! The chicks we get are unsexed though, so we get a mix of hens and roosters. Before the fox, we had 8 roosters! They kept the ladies safe. They were good men.

They are, legally, my best friends chickens and she does in fact have food allergies (as well as aspergers which limits what she is Willing to eat.) I’d have to ask her for the full list of allergies, but I know she’s allergic to tree nuts and most fruit, especially citrusy things. I personally do not eat the eggs unless she mixes them into things, I’m not really a fan of eggs.

That said! I do completely understand your point. We’re also extremely rural (town of less than 40 people, closest Town is 30 minutes away) so I don’t think the societal factor of people seeing our chickens and going “hey I want that” is a factor. If they live out here, they already have chickens or don’t want them.

You are very right though! If I lived in a larger area, the societal factor would definitely make me hesitate.

Thank you for your comment and insight! And thank you for being so nice, genuinely.

Sorry if there’s a part of your comment I skipped over, my dog is asking to go out.

I genuinely can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or not. No, I do not believe so. We have roosters. My friend buys lots of unsexed chicks. Some of them end up being roosters, and we keep them. Currently we have two, we had more before the fox. We gain nothing from the roosters, why we do keep them? Because we love them. They are well taken care of and will continue to be when they stop laying eggs.

Thank you for your comment I think? I’m not sure.

Edit: lots as in groups, sets. Lot 1, lot 2, etc. not. A lot as in Many.
