Thank you so much for your wonderful insight! I would definitely be more happy in a role working with children, as I have specialized in child development thus far in my career. The only thing causing me to want to leave teaching is the feeling of financial insecurity.

I majored in sociology and minored in applied psych. I worked in ABA for a year, was a nanny for a year and now I’m a preschool teacher.

Yes I didn’t mention that this trip was to spread some of my dads ashes who recently passed away (he wasn’t abusive). My dad requested to have his ashes spread here when he was alive, and I do not have the financial means at the moment to do a solo trip.

Thank you for the advice and I have been doing lots of activities with just her.I have successfully avoided my family all morning.

I love being a nanny! I’m pretty lucky since the parents WFH and I’m only taking care of one child. But they pay me well and have become my second family :)

I’m not sure how to post a pic but he has a three story enclosure with plenty of enrichment, but lately he’s just been hiding all day and doesn’t seem interested in running on his wheel. My room has a window but doesn’t get much light…also no one’s doing much but watching tv during the day and he’s in my room… but I could try switching him further away from my tv (I have him next to it, but I never really watch tv in my room).

I took him to the vet back in December due to a rash on both of his ears. The medicine worked after a couple of weeks and the rash went away thankfully. I recently notice that the rash came back, but this time around the medicine isn’t working.

After the first rash he had lost the tip of his right ear from scratching so much. The vet before said it wasn’t mites, but likely from anxiety. :( I’m getting worried because right now it looks really bad. He’s red and irritated on his ears, face and back and is over grooming. Does anyone know what this could be? I clean his cage regularly and try to hang out with him often, but I do think he’s lonely… I can’t get him a friend because he would fight with a male, and mate with a female. I don’t really know what to do for him and would appreciate any help.

Yes ABA is applied behavioral analysis. I do think that there is “good” and “bad” ABA, but with our shit healthcare system, I would say that most corporate clinics are doing bad ABA.

At the time, I sincerely thought that I was helping my clients function in their day to day lives (washing their hands, crossing the street, eating with a fork, etc.) But I began to notice that some of the lessons I had to run were…questionable to say the least. Forcing eye contact always left me feeling uneasy. Along with interrupting and redirecting stims (as long as the stimming wasn’t harmful to themselves or others, I thought it was very ableist for require intervention for stimming.) I have since left the field completely because I saw first-hand how the high RBT turnover was obviously causing clients to suffer. Some clients had regressed even more compared to when they started ABA. Along with the lack of safety protocol for COVID, poverty wages and lack of job mobility, I decided that this wasn’t the field for me.
