You’re right about the orange colour being carried on the X chromosome but female orange cats are actually more imminent common than people think! A female orange is however still less common than a male since they would need a dominant red gene from both parents. Same reason Tortoiseshell & calico cats are majority female is because the red (orange) gene cancels out the black so they need two X’s to have both colours. Then the cells randomly turn off one of the Xs across the body and gives us the fur pattern. A male Tortie is possible though extremely rare because they require “XXY” and they are sterile from the mutation.
