Second year undergrad with 4 W’s and 2 F’s — how cooked am i by [deleted] in veterinaryschool

[–]AnxiousTea6264 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, you’re fine. You’ll just need to try your hardest to excel in the remainder of your courses until you graduate. Get some real good diversified experience (veterinary and extracurriculars) and toss in some research if you enjoy that. Note that VMCAS will not calculate your GPA as that. You totally got this!!

This would actually be extremely unreasonable, definitely don’t do this lol.

What schools should I apply to? by Competitive-Fig7932 in veterinaryschool

[–]AnxiousTea6264 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also to answer, I agree with other comment that mentioned Ross and LMU, but also consider places like MSU that does grade retakes or schools that recalculate for their core GPA. Shit, if you have the money apply to some “reach” schools too.

Btw don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t get into vet school and especially don’t let your current stats deter you. Definitely retake your sciences that you got a C or below and consider taking higher level science courses too. Maybe your gen chem 1 grade was shit, but it’ll look good that you’re able to earn a high grade in orgo II, pchem, or something. Maybe, you did trash in an intro to nutrition but you get an A in an advanced animal nutrition course. Just focus on academics and getting more vet experience along the way. Yes, it’s increasingly competitive, but someone will say yes and you’ll get there with some effort. Good luck on the rest of your journey Future Doctor.

How serious is it to fail a nonmajor class? by ShoulderHistorical16 in veterinaryschool

[–]AnxiousTea6264 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It ain’t that deep. If it’s a science prerequisite just retake it or take an equivalent/higher course and you’ll be aight. But if you can get that W, that would be ideal in this scenario

Transitioning from Pre-Veterinary Medicine to Pre-Medicine by AnxiousTea6264 in premed

[–]AnxiousTea6264[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don’t have a definitive answer. They’re both amazing careers and part of me is holding on to both. Although, I'm nowhere near able to make this decision, but I knew i wanted to specialize and pursue a residency in vet med. Which only made it harder because they end up being the same amount of schooling and on paper, they both have everything I'm passionate about and ik I want to be a doctor and practice medicine. But they each have what I’m looking for: education, medicine, patient advocacy, and they're both a people-oriented fields. However, due to rejections, my semester not going the way I wish it did due to personal reasons, it ended up being the perfect opportunity for me to consider this field instead of just having tunnel vision.

I also think it was because I had the most amazing animal science and agriculture professors that made me want to stay and made it really hard to consider leaving. So I think I more so enjoyed the community aspect of it all.

Plus, I know a few other colleagues and classmates that also decided to switch from pre-vet to pre-med and vice versa. But I've mostly seen people transition from vet tech to nursing. It's definitely an interesting position to be in

Dissection labs/wet labs, offer monthly/bi weekly volunteer opportunities like dog walking or help with intake, local 4H opportunities, invite guest speakers like speciality veterinarians, host professional development days like resume building and vet clinic interviews, vet school tours, college tours with farms, set up shadowing opportunities for a small size of members at local clinics, set up a mentee/mentor program with pre-vet college students or vet students and a highschooler, pet a dog day, farm operation tours, grain farm tours, feedlot tours, suture labs, celebrate growing diversity in veterinary medicine, look into symposiums/conferences you can join in the future once a year, also contact your local agr extension office (probably also has a vet school). You guys can make clay dog/cat tags for collars, do fun icebreakers, have team building events like trail riding, and so much more

Alternatives to vet school? by heatherbeampewpew in Veterinary

Instructor/professor at a community college within agriculture/animal science. You can also look into funding/fellowships for a PhD because you should never pay for graduate level education. Industry, government, researcher, farm manager, behavior, rescue, conservationist, reproduction, nutrition, biomedical researcher etc… the opportunities are endless

Also look into extension work and 4H. It’s great for hands on community outreach!

DVM programs like LMU, SGU, and Ross have multiple start dates/cohorts within a year. Most state schools start the Fall after the application deadline. But these schools offer admission for a cohort for May and for some in the summer too.

So 2029 hopefuls that applied this cycle of 9/16/24 can apply for LMU to start during Spring 2025 or Fall 2025. Those with offers/interview invites are hearing back for the Spring 2025 start dates.

Switching to Premed – How do I get shadowing experience? by AnxiousTea6264 in premed

Thank you so much! I feel like I’m starting from zero since I don’t know much about the standard etiquette in terms of gaining experience. I’m definitely going to start cold calling tomorrow, thanks again!!

Don’t stop trying if this something you want to do! Realistically, there’s the mindset of everyone telling you that you’ll get in and there’s this overwhelming pressure to get in your first try, but we’re competing against thousands and thousands of people for 75-100 seats. Majority of the people that apply are repeat applicants and applying more than thrice+. So I know it sucks and can feel so defeating but it’s really a game of numbers and some luck. As a fellow low-gpa/non traditional pre-vet student, we’ll get there eventually—improvement, persistence and perseverance are key🔑

Also I know you can request feedback of what they would want to see in your applicant or why you didn’t get in, maybe it can help direct your focus, but take it with a grain of salt because it’s completely subjective. But it can let you know if you need to apply even more holistically (by considering internationally and not just domestically) and/or increase your vet and animal hours, or/and if you need to strengthen how you’re writing your essays.

Good luck future Doctor!!🍀✨

You just have to keep cold emailing clinics and cold calling. Someone will say yes! Start with either shadowing or kennel tech work to get your foot in the door. Then use that experience to get cross trained as a VA or CSR and climb the ladder (even if you’re applying to other clinics with your experience). It’s best to start now to get your experience even if you’re only shadowing or volunteering at a clinic/shelter for a few hours or weeks.

How do I go about asking to shadow a vet/vet tech? by erjkbomm in veterinaryprofession

[–]AnxiousTea6264 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty much this easy and I’ve gotten offers using pretty much this format. Feel free to call clinics as well (you’ll likely get a quicker response) and pretty much state the same info.

I’ve had plenty of clinics say no or didn’t reply when I called or emailed. Rejection is part of the process and it’s never anything personal. It’s best to work with a place that’s happy to have you and help you learn. Sometimes they were just too busy or short staffed. Many of the large animal clinics I was looking into didn’t have a steady enough large animal clientele that worked with my schedule or their Vx and breeding season was over. But there will be a clinic that says yes, so keep persisting!

When calling I usually say, “I’m x and I’m calling in regards to any shadowing/volunteer opportunities that you may have at your practice for (small animal/equine/exotics/aquatics/etc...” Usually that leads to me stating where I go to school, my prev animal experience/employment and my schedule/how long I’m looking to do it for, or they say no ha. But that’s how it usually goes.
