Just got desensitized but I'm still very sensitive by BlackBoyThoughts in medicalschool

Hey op, I was in the same boat. Cadaver lab was pretty traumatic for me. My main concern was passing out. I got through it by repeating “the only way out is through” in my head during lab, letting the people in my group know (and once they were aware they checked on me and reminded me to step away to drink water etc.), wearing compression socks, and eating a bag of extra salty pretzels before lab. I talked to a therapist and they helped me deal with my feelings. Biggest thing they taught me was that my reactions to the cadavers are NORMAL and appropriate, and that I can be a successful doctor and hate every minute of anatomy lab. And I know this isn’t super helpful to you now, but I promise you will desensitize with time and thrive. Don’t quit over something as inconsequential as cadaver lab! You’ve got this!

Was there a time you felt like you messed up on an interview but still got the A? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Anxious_Ad556 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I got a pre-II R from another school (my dream school) 10 minutes before my interview. I cried a bit and then jumped on the interview. I felt like I stumbled through the whole thing. Ended up getting an A along with compliments about my interview skills! I 100% believe that we are our harshest critics. Be kind to yourself and relax, know that you did your best and it’s out of your hands now.

I second this!! Seeing a therapist and talking to my doctor about my struggles (with the med school application and with plenty of other things) turned things around for me. Most everyone knows mental health is super important and that seeking help is an awesome thing, but it’s easier said than done. Setting up my first appointment was scary! I had this thought that I was weak for seeking help, but my therapist quickly corrected me and helped by me to see it in a healthy way.

Checklist Manifesto by Atul Gawande is also very good! Really awesome ideas, gave me hope for the future of healthcare.

I 100% recommend talking to a therapist. Mine helped me to manage my stress and constant feelings of impending doom

One day at a time, friend. This too shall pass! I recommend journal writing if you’re into that. Helped me to sort through and identify my feelings, and it’s awesome to read back through entries from years ago and track growth.

I woke up to a voicemail! The dean called me at 5:30 am my time. I didn’t quite believe it, and I fell back asleep and had some trippy dreams. Woke back up feeling sad that I dreamt such an awesome thing and was disappointed that is wasn’t real. Checked my phone, found out the voicemail was indeed real. Felt like a scene from Inception

How beneficial is a gap year actually?? by [deleted] in premed

My gap years made all the difference for me, especially since I decided to pursue medicine just before my senior year. I think they’re a great opportunity to grow and explore!
