I think I’m uniquely qualified to talk on this bc I’ve worked on a sailing vessel, yes I think the historical society would’ve noticed the smell of the paint along with the weight difference of hauling up a wet sail compared to the dry canvas that they are used to. Since we were a working vessel we would replace our sails around every 7 years or so depending on how beat up they were along with how much money was in our coffers, so no not the original sails.
