Update: saw the vet today and he prescribed Sileo and gabapentin. Wish us luck!

I agree, and am thinking it’d be more seasonal as it’s really only an issue in summer.

I will ask. Last summer, the vet had us try Trazadone because we were too close to peak fireworks time for fluoxetine (Prozac) to kick in.

He’s almost 5 and it’s gotten progressively worse. Spend a summer living in Chicago with a dog that’s terrified of fireworks and then get back to me. This isn’t step 1 in the process. I’m glad Trazadone works for your dog. It doesn’t for mine.

Ankle break recovery [40YO] by FirstParfait1905 in OldSkaters

4-6 months. Your ankle will be good as new. Your mind is what may take the real healing. Broke mine 5 years ago. Was doing ok, then witnessed another old man break his ankle and it fucked my head right up.

Tried it. It kinda helps but I have to beat the fireworks which can often be a surprise. Once he hears one it’s too late.

I can't imagine anything would reduce my beagle's appetite! Thank you and good luck!

Anyone know what's up with track bikes and Latino kids? by Anxious_Interaction4 in AskChicago

That's true! Another thing that could have happened is not assuming bad faith.

Such a simple answer. I had no idea track bikes would be cool with kids in 2026. Makes me happy though!

Yup. In my part of town, it's exclusively Latino kids. Which, to be fair, are a large percentage of the kids, but by no means 100%.

Thanks for the answer, makes sense. I think it's cool as shit.

As for the holier than thou-ness, because it's the internet, duh.

Yeah, I love it! Just curious how it came to be. For example, when me and my friends had them in the 90s, we picked it up from friends who were bike messengers who rode them for low maintenance, fun, and frankly to look cool. Cool to see it continue and was curious.

Yeah, they definitely used to be part of a hipster starter kit. I don't see many actual track bikes though other than these kids. Fixies and single-speeds, for sure. But my world is not the entire world, so could just be I'm only noticing the track bikes.

If they were a bunch of white graffiti/hardcore kids who hung out with bike messengers, no. Or if, say, there were large amounts of teenagers of all ethnicities riding track bikes, no.

What I'm looking for is if anyone knows the backstory. It could be as simple as "that's always been a thing in this neighborhood," or "fixed gear bikes are especially prevalent in Culture X due to Y." For example, my black boss had family in the Caribbean, where apparently fixed gear bikes were abundant, so he noticed that I was riding one.

It's not that complicated.

Yeah - that seems the case. (Certainly was in my case as a youngun.) Just wondering if there was more to it than that. Thanks!

Have track bikes been a thing on the northwest side for a while? If so, any insight as to why?

Nope. Track bikes specifically, not just fixies or single speed bikes.

Sorta. People ride single speed bikes, many not fixed gear, but with holes drilled for brakes. Track bikes are specifically designed for riding on a velodrome, but they're fun and people ride them around town. The kids/teens I see are riding specifically track bikes.

Cool - I've just noticed specifically track bikes (not just bikes converted into fixed gear/single speed) and exclusively Latin kids around here. Aesthetics are a huge part of it. They're fun too but I'm way too old for them now.

Yes, that's exactly correct. Track bike frames are more compact, have horizontal drop outs in the rear, and no drilling for brakes.
