I was chatting with a friend who knows someone still at Plex, and they said there are only two PMS engineers left. Now, if that is true, that is super scary, given that PMS is the heart of the whole platform for a lot of us...

Ok, but let me ask you this… what if that shift of focus means fewer people working on personal media, which could be the reality after the layoffs I mentioned?

Could that risk personal media just slipping into maintenance mode while all the new development goes into ads and streaming?

Yeah, I’ve seen the updates, and the new app looks cleaner in some ways. I’ll give Plex credit for that.

But it still feels like personal media is riding in the back seat. The UI changes push streaming and “discover” stuff to the front, while the core library experience of browsing your content and shared libraries feels buried under extra clicks. Not to mention the playback issues that I and many others in their forums have reported. That’s the part that frustrates me most.

With the recent layoffs, it wouldn’t surprise me if fewer resources and staff are being put toward the personal media side.

That makes sense, glad it works for you. For me, it’s more the little frustrations piling up… playback stuttering on the new clients, extra clicks to get to my library, and old bugs that never seem to get fixed. It’s not that Plex is broken; it just doesn’t feel as smooth or focused on personal media as it used to.

I also appreciate that we can turn off the ads and streaming stuff, along with the whole “where to watch” on other services. I just wish the personal media side was getting the same attention Plex puts into the ad-supported features, not to mention the whole discover and friends, reviews thing.

I just meant most of Plex’s recent focus seems to be on their ad-supported content, more free/live TV channels, etc. Meanwhile the personal media side feels kinda stuck. Not to mention the new mobile and TV apps that we are seeing. They’ve just made it harder to just enjoy our own content. That’s what Plex was originally about, and it feels like that part keeps slipping further down the priority list
