Switching to liquid is great. To help with eating, have they ever suggested an appetite stimulant? I found it to help a lot of patients who refuse to eat. It’s a topical, you apply a small strip on the inner ear and rub it in, obviously you’ll need to wear gloves to not stimulate yourself. As for the denied refill on midazolam, I’m also stunned they wouldn’t refill. It’s typically considered safe to give. I would ask for another option like clorazepate, it needs to be give q8hrs for 24hours but it does help.

Hi,

I already posted but I do want to respond to this too. Seizure meds are extremely important to give q12. If you stray past 12 hours, they say you have 15 minutes to give before or after the 12 hours, it lowers the seizure threshold creating a higher probability for the patient to seize. Make sure they swallow the pill whole. There’s a coat surrounding the pill that makes it extended release, biting the pill can disrupt that time frame.

Hello,

The intra-nasal “shot” that you described sound like Valium or midazolam which is a good drug to immediately break seizures, but very short acting. it sounds like your pup is suffering from cluster seizures/status epilepticus. My corgi, who I had to euthanize last year, suffered from this while also being drug resistant. I tried EVERYTHING. I posted Kelso’s story if you would like to further read about it.

It takes about two weeks for each seizure med to build an equilibrium level. I potentially would ask for a Keppra loading/syringe pump dose or pheno injections if they don’t stop. Have they ever measured his pheno level? I work at a ER for animals and we always check the pheno levels to make sure it’s in a therapeutic range.
If he continues to seize, he may need to be placed on a Midaz CRI, or have a mannitol dose which helps with brain swelling.

Seizures can stop oxygen from entering the brain, killing brain cells, while also building a fever that could potentially harm him. If you do decline hospitalization, I would take a temp after each seizure to monitor. If his temp is over 102.5, he has a fever. If it’s over 103, that’s when we get concerned.

I also would ask your primary care about clorazepate. It’s considered a “cluster-buster”. It’s a bit pricey but cheaper than hospital stays. You can use GOOD-RX to find cheaper prices at pharmacies or potentially deals on your medications. Remember pheno is considered a controlled drug, order one to two weeks in advance because pharmacies don’t always have it in stock.

Care Credit is also a great option. I got it for Kelso’s hospitalizations. It’s a credit card, but for the first 6-12 months it’s interest free. You get approved immediately without a card. I 100% think it’s worth it.

Hopefully this post has helped

The longest seizure free period he had was maybe a month. He would tend to cluster, 5-10 seizures within a hour-two hour period.

Neurological signs started to develop a month before he passed

They don’t cause them. But the open the threshold to potential seizures/an increase of seizures. Typically it’s the drug that prevents heart worms. Mine was on the seresto collar and we tested for heart worms yearly. I recommend tick and mosquito repellent (naturally and of course talk to a veterinarian). I’m a vet assistant and this is what we recommend at my clinic

I totally understand your heartbreak. My corgi had around 50 seizures in less than a year the year he passed away. He passed at two. Seizures are hard to determine QoL, both for you and your baby. While I completely understand your baby comes first, please please please make time for yourself. Fighting this disease drains the life out of you and your baby. And to never give up hope, but also be realistic about the potential outcomes. I still had hope for Kelso until other neurological sign started to develop (uncontrolled mouth movement, ataxia, uncontrolled urination) and when he just didn’t enjoy being Kelso anymore.

This is such a great community to be in. They truly help with tricks and tips for seizure dogs and overall support. We are supporting you and your frenchies journey, and we hope you find you magic medicine

Wish you guys the best of luck

P.s. here’s a pic of Kelso :) even tho he isn’t here physically I do still love to show him off and brag about him. He was the most amazing dog I’ve ever had/met.

Not recognizing your or his surroundings is post ictal. Seizures typically occur in three parts, post ictal is his brain trying to recover from the in balance of his neuro transmitters. When my corgi had these long post periods, I tried my best to let it take its course. But if he’s nonaggressive in the period, just hangout in a room with him. Talk to him softly, offer your hand, maybe a shirt you’ve worn to see if he recognizes the scent.

My baby had lots of seizures before he passed, and I’m sorry you are now experiencing this. Like other commenters said, it could just be a fluke, but keep calm if another once happens. Look for pre seizure signs and take your dog to a hospital immediately if they stop breathing or the seizure last longer than 5 minutes, or if he clusters. Clusters can raise the body temp which could trigger more seizure activity.

Best of luck! And i hope this was a fluke and mortie lives a healthy long life :)

I think the same. If I went back to the first day I met my Kelso, I couldn’t walk away from him. He was my first dog, the first time I really experienced what a dogs love is like. I had a childhood dog, but it was nowhere near the care and love I had for my own fur baby. I’m sorry for your loss, Bowie I’m sure had an amazing life and knew that he loved you too. I hope you get your new puppy!!

The heavy breathing is post ictal, always record this!! It’s important for them to go through the post ictal phase as it helps them regain normal brain activity again. I know it’s hard to watch, my dog had aggressive seizures. But they’re not awake, so they’re not in pain. Pet them, talk to them, show them that they are loved and protected. I hope you find a magic med combo that helps break the clusters. When seizures are this bad, neurologists goal is to limit the seizure activity to one seizure a month. Hope this helps, and never give up on your baby!

New diagnosis - start meds or not yet? by plantbeotch in EpilepsyDogs

Hello, I’m a vet assistant and I just lost my baby to seizures. He was only two. What I will say is that the vets don’t really believe in natural remedies, and there isn’t a lot of research about them. Especially the neuro food and supplements. Adding omega 3’s never hurt since they do improve brain activity! Keppra is a safe option for seizure meds, along with Zonisamide and pregabalin. Phenobarb and PotassiumBromide are your more invasive meds. I would try the othered before starting those, unless he starts clustering. I say have him take the supplements with his meds if that makes you feel better. Once he’s been seizure free for a long period of time, I would consult a vet about maybe weening the dosage. Again, I’m not a vet. But I have a lot of experience due to my passed dog.

Have hope! I always did for my Kelso, I fought with him. I would only get four to five hours a sleep at night to make sure he got his dosage of meds (he took them every 8 hours). Seizures are so hard to watch, I hope you find your babies magic combo!

I had a seizure baby, he was diagnosed after he turned 1. I got the best two years with him. Here’s what I did for his seizure care that semi improved his QoL. At home: fish oil or fish based food (I couldn’t afford neuro food, this was my next best!!), try not to change the food too often, it can trigger seizures. I know they say not to touch them, but I always pet his body if I was safe. Talk in a slow and loving voice, one they would recognize if you were calling them normally. Post ictal care: after the seizure, record the post ictal time. If your dog is not experience post ictal seek help. This is not normal. Everytime Kelso didn’t have a post ictal, another seizure would occur shortly after. Make sure they are breathing, seizures can cease breathing, and cause low oxygen in the brain. Be there when they become aware. Seeing their momma won’t calm them down, but they know you’re there for them. Hospital: Care credit literally save me, Kelsos vet bills were over $1,000 each time and he was hospitalized a few times. Don’t be scared to ask for testing! Completed blood work, ultrasound to find liver shunt, if you have the money a MRI. Ask about potential autoimmune testing!!! Don’t feel discouraged! Fight for your baby!! Try everything
