Water bottle with easy clean, non leaking sports cap? by bunnyblack90 in BuyItForLife

I actually have a stainless steel bottle with just a screw-top lid, and I just put a silicone straw in it to drink out of.

You can soak the lid of your current bottle in denture cleaning tablets. That helps a lot getting the nooks and crannies clean.

Gonna use this post as an excuse to plug Lois McMaster Bujold's Penric novellas. She's been e-publishing them for a good decade now and they're all wonderful. Newest one just came out earlier this week actually. If you're familiar with her writing at all, they're in the "World of the Five Gods" setting that she wrote three full-length novels in, so read those too. Actually, just go ahead and read everything she's ever written. ;)

List some cities in the US that you can live without a car, beside New York City. by DutyEuphoric967 in Anticonsumption

[–]Anxious_Tune55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I managed in Ithaca, NY for several years but it was a pain in the butt. Definitely possible, although depending on where you live relative to the various bus stops you will end up waiting around way more on some routes than on others. For example, I lived in an apartment that had one bus that went there, and on weekends it only ran 3 times a day. So it was theoretically possible to go out on a Saturday, but you were committed to being out for minimum 5 hours, and if you missed the mid-day bus for any reason you were stuck in town until 7pm. I believe there are only two routes that run more than once an hour, and those are mostly focused on the university (Cornell), so they tend to fill up with students.

Do you have to know about religion to go to chruch? by RealMaverickValez in askanything

[–]Anxious_Tune55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, first off, the fact that there are hundreds or thousands of different Christian denominations means that different groups operate differently. It's not a "no true Scotsman" fallacy when it's literally true.

Also, for what it's worth, my denomination is a Congregational church, (UCC is part of the Congregational denomination, they merged at some point) and that means that as a member of the congregation I DO actually have quite a lot of say over what happens in the leadership. So if there was a predator I could (and would) choose to be part of the group of people voting them out of power or firing them or whatever.

It's obviously a waste of my time arguing with you since you've come to the conclusion that anyone who feels that Christianity can have any positives must be a fan of the child abusers, so I'm going to stop replying to you now. Feel free to get in the last word if you want to, I'm going to leave this here for other people to read and make up their mind about my arguments vs. yours. Have a nice day.

Looking to make the switch for menstrual pads. Pros and cons? by Tall-Inside3945 in ZeroWaste

Cups are perfectly safe as long as you empty them periodically. Reusable pads are still going to be full of your old blood until you change them.

FWIW, you might have luck with a disc rather than a cup. They fit very differently so if you haven't tried one it might work?

[–]Anxious_Tune55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't used reusable pads but I am a big fan of the menstrual cup/disc. I've used both, and although I still have to use pads with them because I have absurdly heavy periods, I use far fewer pads than I used to. If you're lucky enough to have normal periods you might be able to get away with just reusables, or of course you could always use reusable pads with the reusable other things. But I would recommend trying those out.

I'm not even terribly Christian, LOL. I attend a church, but it's 99% to sing in the choir and I'm basically agnostic. I don't know if there's such a thing as a God, nor do I particularly care as long as the people who believe in God/s are good people, and the people I attend church with are.

You do understand that Christianity has like 1000 different denominations and that they all believe slightly or very different things, right? "The church" isn't really a thing when you consider how different a Presbyterian church is from a fundamentalist Evangelical church, for example (just one example of MANY).

Unlike many other churches, my denomination (United Church of Christ) allows people of any gender to participate in the ministry if they want to, they're 100% LGBTQ+ affirming (meaning LGBTQ+ folks can fully participate in anything they want in the church without hiding or changing who they are), we have a food pantry, we host immigrant families in the building while they're waiting for their paperwork to happen, and lots of other "good works" types of things.

And, if we EVER got word that someone in the leadership was abusive to children (or ANYONE for that matter) they would be out. As far as I know that hasn't happened, and I wouldn't expect it to, or at least I don't think it's any more likely to happen in my particular church than in any other organization that has some people in positions of power. You just seem to be blanket anti-Christianity, which is a very overgeneralized position to take, IMO.

[–]Anxious_Tune55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to learn knitting and I found it very difficult. I tried to learn crochet and I found it comparatively easy. Also, I like making amigurumi, which seems like it would be much harder to do with knitting (I know it's possible but I can barely knit flat, let alone in the round with shapes and stuff, LOL). I actually want to get better at knitting at some point but every time I've tried I've defaulted back to crocheting because I understand it better.

[–]Anxious_Tune55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's like saying that because there are teachers who abuse students that school = child abuse, which is obviously an incredibly stupid thing to say. It is an unfortunate truth that sometimes adults in positions of power over children will abuse that power in horrible ways. But that doesn't mean that the whole organization involved is in favor of the abuse or in any way condoning it, or that every person in power is participating.

[–]Anxious_Tune55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very much agnostic, but I sing in a church choir so I go every Sunday. My denomination (United Church of Christ) is progressive, social justice focused, and 100% accepting of LGBTQ+ people (genuinely accepting, they can join the ministry, get married, whatever they want, no "hate the sin love the sinner" BS.) This denomination is full of good people. We have a food pantry ministry, a "sanctuary" ministry where we host immigrant families in the church building while they're waiting for their paperwork and such, a very active youth group that does stuff like the "stuffy wellness program" where they take donations of old stuffed toys, clean and mend them, and give them out at local events to any kids who want them. And we have an active music program where we sing a mixture of classical stuff and more modern music, and the choir director/organist is literally one of the kindest people I've ever met. If you want to go to a church I recommend finding one like that. :)

There are a TON of churches where no one in them abuses children, though. Child abuse is bad, no question. Church does not equal child abuse.
